Match Thread – Will Spurs Go To War Against The Marines

|

It’s a tasty Cup week for Tottenham Hotspur fans and having seen us book our place at Wembley against Brentford in the EFL Cup, on Sunday we are looking to progress through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a trip to Marine FC’s Rossett Park.

With an incredibly packed fixture list in the first half of the campaign, manager Jose Mourinho has regularly rotated his first team group and I can only imagine we’ll see even more changes for this one, with a number of fringe players and youth used to get some minutes into their legs, whilst resting others.

This is a game we should be looking to win pretty comfortably, even if it’s likely to be a physical affair and we’ll have to dig in at points. Whatever team is put out, any other result simply won’t be acceptable.

We will be missing Gareth Bale and Giovani Lo Celso, but Matt Doherty’s suspension should be up for this one. Given the whack Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg took, I’d imagine he’ll be given this one off as well.

Just got to get the job done.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

The BBC commentator on the gooner cup game has just said that Everton offered Marine use of their training facilities leading up to the match and that Liverpool offered them their tactical notes on Spurs. I don’t see that as being very neighbourly.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Neighbourly to us as fellow PL sides I meant, clearly it’s very neighbourly for them as Liverpool based sides.

  • wentworth says:

Hope we can see an interesting team selection to include Bale, Dele, Vinicius, Clarke, Rodon, Tanganga, White, Hart and Lamela. Hope we can see an attacking game. No sideways and back passing. Shots from outside the box. Good crosses and lots of action. We could end up with four trophies this season (arise Saint Jose) or nothing (adios Mourinho).

I see the game is live on ESPN2 Geoff.

I hope tom dick and harry starts

It is early in the morning or late at night, whatever and I am reading vital, there have and are some very good points regards young player’s, note young, and there actions during this Covid 19 crisis, but it is only some, a few out of hundreds, so why keep slagging them off, by some on here and stress by some not all.

The greatest problem in this country is the hundreds, if not thousands of people out there who just could not give a fcuk about others, disrespectful, me me me, whatever you like to call them, who are breaking the rules laid down, it is as simple as that, that’s my opinion and I have had my say on the matter, that’s it!

Later on today, this evening, we are playing Marine FC, who? you say, well a Semi-pro football team who’s player’s when asked have worked their bollox off to get this far in the FA Cup, their reward…drawn against a mighty Prem lge football team/club…us/Spurs!

So what do some want? answer… firstly disrespect the FA Cup and secondly which I fined worse disrespect Marine FC themselves by fielding a massively weakened side, as in Squad players and Youth, who many of the Marine people, owners, management, players, fans etc will have no bloody idea who they are.

The Marine FC players will know Spurs will not field a full strength 11, but please Spurs field a team of some “heard ov’s” so even if we mullar them they can go away and brag to family, friends etc “I played against whomever in the FA cup in 2021”.

Lastly JM and players make us proud. COYS

  • BelgianSpur says:

I hope we take this game seriously. Beyond that, I’m afraid there isn’t much to discuss Geof, since we know so little about Marine.

  • Geof Hendrick says:

We’ll know a bit more by tomorrow, mate. Given the obvious expectations by EVERYONE for this game I can’t help thinking that the most interesting result would be a Marine win! But …. 0 – 7! : – )

  • Hot Tottingham says:

It’s funny but the media has a hell of a lot to say about this match, even if we don’t. And I’ve learned a lot about Marine these past couple of days… But, if no one on here is at all interested… It’s a shame…

So, I’m just going to suggest the possible Spurs team:

    Hart
    Doherty Rodon Tanguy Davies
    Sissoko Winks
    Bale Dele Lucas
    Vinicius

    • Hot Tottingham says:

Tanguy at CB?! That would be interesting. A playmaking defender!

      I meant Tanganga, of course…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I agree with all in your last post PY… And I think a similar line-up to the one I have suggested is one that should show enoough respect to the opposition. Especially if Bale proves fit enough to play along with Dele and Englands former No.1. And with maybe one or both of Kane and Son are on the bench…

    • PompeyYid says:

Good morning HT, hope all is well with you and your family, plus of course the people you look after.

Anyway thanks for that, the team/side you suggested has a lot of “I know them” in its selection and shows respect to Marine FC and the FA Cup itself.

I am looking forward to the match this evening, am going for 0-6, aw! maybe 1-6 let them have a bit of bragging rights, after all they have done bloody well to get this far. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

This is what their manager Neil Young had to say:

“Everyone is made up, you are playing Tottenham and the first thing I think of is, ‘Oh god.’ It is not, ‘Wow, yes, it’s Tottenham,’ ” Young says.

“The first fear is that you get humiliated on live TV. And then you think, ‘Hang on, I have to give a bit of respect to my lads for what they have achieved’.
“What brings me away from that fear of humiliation is, whatever the result, I have every faith that every single one of them will give their absolute best.
“They have never hidden. Their body language has never been poor. Sending them out into battle, I can rely on them to do their very best.”

And, they have had to play 7 cup matches already to get to this reward of playing Spurs… It will mean the world to them.

    • PompeyYid says:

HT, so true by Neil Young there, your last line totally encapsulates the FA Cup as a whole. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Another Neil Young had this to sing…

    There’s colors on the street
    Red, white and blue
    People shufflin’ their feet
    People sleepin’ in their shoes
But there’s a warnin’ sign on the road ahead
There’s a lot of people sayin’ we’d be better off dead
Don’t feel like Satan, but I am to them
So I try to forget it any way I can

Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world
Keep on rockin’ in the free world

  • Geofspurs says:

I’ve got lots of NYs record/CDs, HT.

It’s difficult to know what to do about team selection. Common sense says we should give our fringe players a game and keep our main guns on the bench …. just in case. But this may be the only time Marine supporters will get a good look at some PL stars …. which means they should start. Buggered if I know!

    • PompeyYid says:

Good morning Geof, I hope you and your family are keeping well down under!

It is probably true regards Marine FC’s supporters and their players, so lets respect them and basically field the sort of team HT suggested earlier, its what the magic of these early rounds of the FA Cup is all about. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….no disrespect to Marine but it would be a pretty poor state of affairs if we arrived at the ‘just in case scenario’. :- )

  • Hot Tottingham says:

To show them the utmost respect, I think we should treat this match as though we are playing another PL team.

So, we park the bus and hit them on the counter! That’ll confuse them…

What is a real shame for their supporters, is not being able to be there in. the ground and sharing a few songs with the away crowd.

But, as PY pointed out before, the ground is surrounded by houses and flats that back on to it. And some of those that live there have a full and close view of the pitch. So there should be some vocal support for the Marine lads and a little bit of live match atmosphere for them all and us who are watching on TV…

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY…..probably too late to let you know but you can watch your home town clubs game starting shortly on The FA Player.

  • Niall D says:

I think that is perhaps the whole issue for me this year
It’s not not just so much that we’re playing Marine and I don’t know them.
Other than a bit of talk there’s no real “set up” theres no MOTD cameras at the club house with the 20 bearded fat blokes with pints singing Marine songs.
No showing round the dressing room with the “new toilet seat fitted specially”
I know how Marine feel having played against larger clubs over here in competitions and how that feels.
So for them I feel great, for Spurs though, a win proves nothing, what team do we field.
The only benefit(for us) is that HK, Sonny, Hoj, Dier, should all get a well deserved rest.
But we can still field a few household names.
I mean Marine no disrespect, just can’t get motivated just yet, maybe later.

  • 123spurs says:

    10-1 to spurs

  • PompeyYid says:

I have just seen on social media that Marine FC were offered Mesuit Ozil on loan for todays game, their reply was “no thanks we have enough substitutes” lol! COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PY…he must be well practised at social distancing by now! :- )
