Match Thread – WHL Comforts For Spurs As We Look To Lay Down A Marker & Cut Through The Toffees

|

Well, it’s been a strange old summer for supporters of all clubs, let alone Tottenham Hotspur fans but it’s finally time for the first match thread of 2020/21.

I trust this finds the good citizens of Vital Spurs and their wider bubbles, in good health and spirits, as this coming season is bound to be a rollercoaster, both on and off the pitch!

2019/20 was interesting, to say the least, with our problems and the changes we saw (nobody mention poor performances), so this year after a semi-busy transfer window of captures, we also have Europa League qualification to look forward to – which simply only complicates things further given the additional games we face for barely a Plovdiv of financial benefit compared to the Champions League itself.

But it’s Everton up first as we go into a new strange season where fans still won’t be in attendance and nobody knows if we’ll actually perform like the Spurs we expect either, but the likelihood is more of the same pragmatic type of football Jose Mourinho is famed for – we just have to hope the results follow.

Everton...

Win

Draw

Lose

It’s a busy start to the season with five games to pack in ahead of us slipping into October, so can we lay down a marker against the Toffees and show that we’ve learnt from last season’s mishaps?

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

B108 – holy grail is indeed ambifooted (anywhere on the pitch) LOL but very few and far between especially at CB hence my argument for example to have at least 1 of the 4/5 CB’s in the 1st team squad to be indeed at least left-footed primarily!

As for Tanganga only played a few games for us and at several different position’s also (so very, very little to go on so far and make a good judgement) – did OK overall but there were still plenty of mistakes and he is still very raw and has much to learn furthermore I think he will be much needed at RB this season to compete/cover Doherty with KWP leaving, Aurier very likely to leave and Foyth even looking likely also! Fernandes as a regular RB – doubt it but let’s wait and see – my money is on Tanganga and it will help him also to learn much more and quickly without the stress of being central and the very last line of defence (barring the GK of course LOL)! BUT of course just my humble opinion but very happy to be able to express it with fellow YIDS on here for sure – a pleasure my friends indeed!

All the same keep well mate and always respect your opinion as a top poster on here for sure!

Going back to what I said about us probably having to use Sissoko on Sunday. The good news is that Winks is back training. Whether or not he will play though is anyone’s guess.

Still no news on Lo Celso’s progress or condition..

    Hi Danny
Can you do another thread. Maybe titled my favourite LCB and condescending unfunny sarcastic retorts. Just for EJ and HT.
Let the rest of us get on with match day.( Sarcasm lowest form of wit)
I feel whilst Everton have strengthened, it’s not necessarily in the right places. They have improved their midfield in James and Allan. But I feel for them they would’ve been better with a CF.
Re us looks like N’Dom is possibly a doubt (yet again) would love to have seen him with Hoj, LoCeslo,
Just to see how they gelled.
However looking forward to it and lately we have done very good against the toffs hope it continues.

  • 123spurs says:

EL J which LCB would you go for? Slash out some names put HT out if he’s misery and what elusive LCB should we sign.

  • El Jefe says:

HT – I did read that about Winks – but perhaps too early?! Do like the idea of Hoj and him linking up and think it could finally be the full making of Winksy (as I said on here a while back ago) with the defensive shackles released and him being able to move forwards more and be more involved in direct transition from defence to attack (taking full advantage of his passing ability and also strong running on the ball, etc from what I have seen many a time from him now) – indeed I’ve got much more time for him than a year ago and am more in your camp with regards to him than most on here who seem to want him sold if truth be told (something I was reluctant on but agreed with last November in order to raise much needed funds if necessary for other signings eg in January/this summer, so on and so on………..)!

That said I also like the idea of Hoj with Lo Celso and even Hoj with N’Dombele if he ever finally gets fit and can start making it with us LOL….! With Lo Celso (and N’Dombele possibly also) if in top form I guess Winksy might have to compete/cover with Hoj – not necessarily a bad thing especially against most opposition where we should be looking to be on the attack as much as possible and dominate games although when facing the top 4 especially and this will be much harder to do thus not necessarily so I would prefer to have Hoj in the holding role ideally – it is after all his FORTE and why he was bought especially!

  • El Jefe says:

123 blimey you’re sounding like JOD LOL – I must say TQ2 and ND a while back ago had an interesting suggestion in Mings who is left-footed and has quite a bit going for him (height, strength, speed, composure) only thing for me was not much experience and already 27 but still given everything else might well have been worth the risk and if Villa had been relegated could have been got on the cheap as well most probably!

Ake was 1 I really wanted (and I think JOD and others too if truth be told) but unfortunately I knew we were very unlikely to be able to afford him especially this summer even if in the past we’ve spent a similar amount on Davy Sanchez (given the supposed minimum £40m clause) and that was before Man City came in for him, etc!

As it is I am not a bloody scout so cannot start throwing up the kind of cheaper options that we are likely to be able to afford and thus be interested in ATM given the current financial crisis but another interesting one if we could afford him and given Villareal apparently want Foyth so maybe a swap deal plus cash could be done, thus is Pau Torres – looked quality for me in both Spain games I saw this last week and apparently very highly rated in Spain as well – probably like Ake bigger fish in for him already/eventually sniffing but you never know your luck until you try and they apparently really want Foyth also……………!

  • El Jefe says:

HT – funny that because eventually I did get it off my chest on here LOL – rabbit, rabbit, rabbit – not that that’s going to do much good for us as I even being a share-holder do not hold any swing let alone anyone else on here for that matter LOL! Oh the little man…………..!

  • El Jefe says:

POOR little man in fact – what chance……?????!!!!!

  • El Jefe says:

Hi ND – I think Calvert-Lewin is dangerous and starting to come good after a decent season last and even Kean could prove worthwhile if he can take to the Prem eventually, so actually pretty solid STR’s for them to have especially for a club like Everton who haven’t been in the top 6 for ages now and given not in Europe and with Tosun on top they are probably OK for STR’s for now IMHO of course! Then they have a plethora of wing forwards including Richarlison (who I know you like just as I do), Walcott, Iwobi, Barnard, even Rodriguez can play from the LW coming inside so plenty of options there as well if needed!

Personally the only midfielders of there’s I rated was Sigurosson and Gomes and maybe to an extent Delph but apart from that they did not have very much else in there and you need to have quite a few CM’s especially in the UK with the very tough demands of the Prem (being the best but also most phyiscal league in the world) and also the cup’s on top (and if in Europe as well even much more so……) so now signing Allan, Doucoure and Rodriguez will likely help improve them quite a bit for sure IMHO!

Furthermore I feel defensively they are not that strong depth wise – sure Digne, Mina, Keane and Coleman are a decent/good set of 4 but apart from that again not much else so would be surprised if they do not concentrate and strengthen here further now indeed today coming out they are after Tomori on a year’s loan for example!

I think given all these mentioned they actually have a very decent team now and will provide a very stern test for us – much more so than in previous year’s and with Carlo at the helm expect a much tougher match and pretty much forget our good run against them in the past – new times now unfortunately and we’ll definitely have our work cut out here to get all 3 points even if we have home advantage and a very, very good starting 11 now ourselves (even a good squad if we could just actually add the finishing touches of a 2nd STR and 1 LCB finally LOFL)!

  • El Jefe says:

I see my 1.19am post is now up – 2 good interesting reads and tend to back me up as regards having at least 1 proper left-footed LCB in any squad but I’ll leave it there and here end of!

  • Niall D says:

EJ good point re Everton glad your back to the match day stuff.
    HT yes if only…….

  • Hot Tottingham says:

So ND whilst having a go at me for being sarcastic, over two posts, you do it with your own brand of sarcasm…. Now that is funny…

Or were you just being plain rude, without any humour attached?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Talking of Sissoko… I hear that he played a very good game for France in their 4-2 win over Croatia. I presume he was playing ahead of his missing Spurs team mate, NDombele…

Seems like Sissoko may not be the most technically gifted of players, but for Spurs and France, he has proven himself to be very useful. The mans a trooper……

  • PompeyYid says:

Regards the opener on Sunday v the Toffee’s, it could be a sticky game, that’s a lol!, but with a master planner at the helm now, as in JM, I believe we will win it, any score will do, I really do not care how its done as long as we get the 3pts and then on to the next game.

My two penneth for what its worth, sarcasm v humour, when being face to face its easy to see where you are and what is intended, expressions etc, but to put it in writing I honestly believe you have to be a very good writer to put it into words, so it is understood, some peoples sarcasm can come across as bloody rude though not intentional, the same as humour , HT is very tongue in cheek but as he said to ND “own brand of sarcasm…now that’s funny”, as I said prior it is all down to how it is written, mind lastly it is good seeing how some take things, thus different minds and uptakes, myself being ex-military and contruction I have one of the driest sense of humour’s you can have, thus taken wrong at times.

I hope my writing is clear, but I doubt it lol! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

It is difficult PY. But even when I put a smiley face or a LOL people still seem to get the wrong end of the stick….

I don’i like using smiley faces and LOL’s anyway….. Even so my posts on here are usually so stupid that they really shouldn’t be taken so seriously…. But, it; not always everyone’s idea of humour. It is what it is. And I ain’t about to change……. I mean no harm….

  • El Jefe says:

No worries DW, ND cheers mate – I try to have my moments LOL!

  • Niall D says:

    No HT just honest.
We were trying to get a new match thread going. Yet your first openers were little more than drivel.
Putting down suggestions of possible signings by other people. And quotes even from myself. Then a stupid score line.
Though many of us wanted away from the previous page. You ended up in another debate. In your usual”humorous”way.
Just a bit pompous for me.
    Not for me m8.
    Good luck folks
Like many here lately I’m gone.
Not here to argue with fellow Spurs.
    Wish you all good luck.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

I didn’t quote you at all. But if you was referring to the tin hat thing… Several posters often use that phrase on here and on the forum. I then used it myself…… That was the joke.

The 10-4 scoreline is a reference to Bill Nicholson’s first match in charge of Spurs way back when… Spurs 10-4 Everton! The fact that a couple of posters have recently mentioned the year ending in a one, refers to Spurs winning the double in 1961 as well as other trophies in years ending in one….. It reminded me of that result…

So there is a method to my madness, whether or not you get it…… You thought I was taking the piss out of you…… I wasn’t even thinking about you or anyone else……. I was just trying to bring a smile to peoples faces……….

      • Hot Tottingham says:

… And I wasn’t taking the piss out of other peoples striker choices… I was taking the piss in general about two strikers that myself and EJ have both suggested. Deeney (me) and King (EJ)….. I was just joking about both of our choices as if they were at Spurs playing in that fantasy, high scoring game….. Which wasn’t a fantasy back in Billy Nicks time……..

The post about winning the quadruple was me having a cheeky dig at DH and his usual pessimistic approach to the new season……

It was my response to him but referring to the long running conversation about the TW I have had with EJ…… I was finding humour in my own need to debate it so much as anything EJ has written….. I was just taking the piss in a very silly way, I know. But I was mocking myself too……. I do it all the time. I also say I haven’t a clue, nearly all the time. I have also said to EJ a hundred times that he may well be right about what he writes…. I was just trying to be funny… So I failed , so what.. Big deal!

Take it or leave it……… But please don’t be offended by what I’m telling you was not intended to be offensive. Mate I’m a street-wise working class Londoner. When I’m being truly offensive, you will now for sure… And, it would get me banned from VS, for sure…… Again!

  • wentworth says:

Seems as though all the elusive strikers we might have signed have been snapped up by lower clubs. Glad Harry wasn’t injured during the ghastly internationals. I watched both but switched off at half time. Shocking, clueless performances. Anyway back to Spurs.. we still need a left back, creative midfielder who can score and take free kicks and that elusive back up striker. Kane will be knackered by the end of October. Hope we don’t come unstuck by the toffees

  • 62rovinella says:
