Match Thread – VAR Needs To Be Pensioned Off & Spurs Will Be Hoping To Do Just That To Chelsea

|

I’m pretty sure what can be said about the Video Assistant Referee (lack of) technology from a Tottenham Hotspur point of view will have been aired on Sunday evening and throughout Monday, but it’s time for us to quickly move on to Chelsea on Tuesday evening in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

Having received a bye against Leyton Orient, that little break clearly helped us against Shkendija and Newcastle when it came to the more ‘Spurs like’ attacking performances we saw, but as we all know, we did not get our just deserts against Steve Bruce’s side.

We cannot make that mistake again against Chelsea as they more than have the quality to punish us, so whilst we can be optimistic we will create chances – they have to be taken and Newcastle is the lesson.

Our chances aren’t improved by an injured Son Heung-Min but we have to hope that is the last blow to come from the weekend’s action – Tuesday night, fresh game, fresh opportunity and let’s all hope it’s a fresh win to put Sunday’s nightmare well and truly behind us.

Come to think of it… Maybe we need cover for top scorer, Son. Not Kane at all!

Not Dele! Someone not quite as good as him, but as cheap as we can possibly get!

Get it done Danny Boy. Make Jose’s Day!

Respect, demands Jose… So Danny, show some!

    Dele out
    King in!

  • wentworth says:

Dele in. Jose out. Much better for the future of Spurs.

  • PompeyYid says:

Well this is a tough one to call v the Chavs tonight, oh bollox am going for a tight win…3-1 Spurs. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Sorry, thanks Danny for the Match thread. COYS

  • jod says:

Hot Tottingham – You have cover for Son in Moura and Bergwyn. They aren’t as good of course, that’s why they are cover not first choice. Once he’s fit of you will also have Bale. You have zero cover for Kane., Dele can’t play there even on top form and he’s a long way from that. All centre forwards are strikers, not all strikers are centre forwards. We desperately need a back up centre forward. Run Kane into the ground like we’ve done before and I’m not sure it will matter how many wide attacking players we’ve got.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Sorry jod but I was having one of my silly senior moments there…… I was not being serious…

(By the way, Lucas has been one of Jose’s regular 1st choice players from since when he arrived)…

I’m not saying we couldn’t do with a back-up striker/CF or whatever the player has himself down as on his CV. I just don’t think we need one named King. Or Benteke or Deeney……. Or any one that really isn’t up to much, imo…

Thing is, If Jose was more flexible in his ways, he wouldn’t be so fixated on what he and you would call a CF… Who plays with old school traditional CF’s these days? There are more ways to skin a cat than lobbed balls up to a big tall guy… Not even Harry K himself is an old school CF.

  • Geofspurs says:

My greatest fear is that we buy King …. and have continual threads on the same subject.

  • Geofspurs says:

And repetitive threads too, I might add!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Just for the hell of it, I’ll guess a line-up for tonight.

    Hart
    Aurier Sanchez Toby Reguilon
    Winks Sissoko
    Lamela Lo Celso Bergwijn
    Kane

Is Sissoko fit? Is Dele really not in the squad?
Of course, if Dele is fit, isn’t going anywhere but isn’t playing tonight… He may well be being held back for Thursday. That’s what I’m hoping anyway…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

By the way… Tanganga is apparently fit again. Maybe seem him tonight on the bench?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I would be amazed if anyone who started on Sunday starts the game tonight and anyone who starts tonight probably won’t start on Thursday.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

If anyone who played on Sunday plays tonight it’s doubtful they would be played again on Thursday.

  • El Jefe says:

HT – you know what, I feel we’re that desperate that if nothing else – then maybe I’d even be willing to take Benteke/Deeney in a worst case scenario – Monday night 10.59pmish sort of thing ……… LOL!

Hopefully JK can come to the rescue though (although we’ve got until 16th October to get him) and at 5ft11 (same as Firmino no less who is a decent target and exceptional link-up man) no reason why JK cannot be decent for us in a similar mould if really necessary and covering HK10! His old boss Howe said he had it all – technical, physical, etc – for me at around £15m and £50-70K a week certainly worth a punt for sure and we’re desperate for HK10 cover and now maybe even Sonny also and JK is very versatile indeed!

Bale yes agreed, but call me greedy if you like but I would rather like to see him and Sonny either side of HK10 more often than not – injuries permitting on ALL 3 of course LOL!

Dele – would love to see him in behind those 3 and see what he can conjure up – especially when N’Dombele finally comes good hopefully and Hoj is fully acclimatised, etc to sit in behind and help protect Dele as best possible – not to mention of course Lo Celso alternation with him and then Winks, Sissoko, etc covering also in CM! He’s our only proper no.10 (yes Bale and HK10 could play there if necessary but never really going to be the case given they are needed even further forwards ideally)!

Given his talent and CV, etc definitely worth keeping – no shadow of a doubt – but what do I know – loathe to see him go IMHO but unfortunately if that’s the bloody case so be it but sincerely hope not! JM if you’re reading remember: Salah, De Bruyne and Lukaku ………. (not even the special 1 can get them all right LOL ……)!

PY – yes mate what can we do although that said I think we are top 5 material still for sure – I think top 6 will not necessarily be what it was anymore – judging by what we’ve been doing these last 12 months as regards incomings, etc – as well as the other obvious top 4 – I think it’s now going to be more of a top 5 (Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Chelskia and luckily Us)! Looking at Arse-anal – there squad is just nowhere near in comparison to the rest of us 5 (especially if we can get the CB and STR in the next 5.5 days to really compliment what we already have) – but let’s wait and see and all IMHO, etc!

Just to say that then there’s likely to be a pack of 3-4 – Everton, Arse-anal, Leicester and Wolves chasing for that 6th spot but don’t think any of these 4 are of the standard of the top 5 I gave above including us – I know Leicester appear to be bucking that trend – but for example last season they were only a couple of points ahead of us and alright they’ve started very well so far but give us and the other 4 time and the table will start to sort itself out – massive fight for top 4 between the 5 of us this season for sure – credit to DL/JM for actually looking like they are going to put us back in that position already even after all the negativity of the last 15 months or so plus this massive weight around our neck that is the current pandemic especially given our stadium financing situation – here’s hoping we can pull through it as best possible!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I think I’m going to cry!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I do hope you realise that my earlier post was more a dig at Jose than you, EJ….. Well, it was a dig at your need for King, if not you personally. 🙂 I’m digging at Jose for his treatment of Dele, versus the rumours of him wanting players that are not up to Dele’s standard, imo…..

I personally don’t feel that Spurs are that desperate. Even though our manager seems to feel that way….

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Aside from Dele… What’s with Sessegnon? Jose doesn’t even put him on the bench, whilst complaining that our squad isn’t deep enough. Albeit, it’s too big (?)… When will he consider having Fernandes on the bench, let alone the pitch?

    Maybe tonight?

  • Hot Tottingham says:

EJ, if a player is in the English leagues, the TW is extended up to the 11th (I think) of October.

So the 5th is not THE last day of the TW, unless they are from abroad.

  • PompeyYid says:

I could be and probably am wrong here, but I think JM is playing a word game with the media, thus even us fans are knackered and unsure what’s going on, with his way of wording things it is difficult to even read between the lines, just some thoughts. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

PY. In spite of my worries about Dele with Jose and all that. I’m inclined to agree with you.

And, I can actually see him playing a strong (and dare I say) good enough team tonight to give the blues a real run for their money. I think he would love to put one over on his old mate Frank and his ex-boss, Russian, Mafioso, geezer, chav. type person!

    Come On You Spurs!

  • El Jefe says:

HT – no worries mate – 16th October but only with lower league sides, can’t do deals directly between Prem sides and yes certainly not with foreign one’s after 11pm next Monday!

Also read a very interesting article on Football London that this is the last opportunity to get foreign EU players pre-settlement stage before full on Brexit from 1/1/2021 – then rules completely change just like with Non EU players currently!

To be fair to JM, yes Sonny and Bale can cover HK10 and are best equipped to do it especially in theory as both are 6ft although Sonny is completely siht at using his head LOL, Bale on the other hand is decent but anyway Moura and Bergs are midgets LOL and Dele is a no.10 and Lamela we’ve never tried up front anyway!

Problem is Bale and even Sonny now along with HK10 become very injury prone if over-exerted especially, so we could really do with a new STR/CF IMHO – JK for all the reasons I’ve been giving all summer for me is surely the current go to option and it gets stronger and stronger with each passing day – no wonder all these links to him heavily returning from yesterday indeed but let’s wait and see what happens!
