Match Thread – Spurs Take A Second Bite At The Pacos de Ferreira Cherry

|

Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the 2021/22 campaign has hardly been blistering, but you can certainly describe it as steady with two Premier League wins from two against Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Nuno Espirito Santo appears to be settling in well at White Hart Lane and we are undoubtedly more defensive in approach, but whether or not that changes when Harry Kane is back up to speed, is open for a bit of debate.

There’s still plenty to sort out off the pitch though and that’s not just limited to the ongoing Kane saga as few would think we are finished in the transfer market, particularly if we look at squad depth with an expectation that Nuno will continue to rotate wildly, ala the almost embarrassing no show against Pacos de Ferreira in the Europa Conference League.

And that is a pressing concern as we welcome them to home soil this Thursday and we already have a 1-0 deficit to overturn. Play as we did in the first leg, well, let’s just hope we don’t.

Pacos de Ferreira...

Win

Draw

Lose

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

BS….the problem is, if you buy new players then are unable to shift those they are meant to replace before the end of the window you are stuck with their salaries for god knows how long while not being of any use to the squad.

The critical factor about Harry Kane is not only is he a top striker, he is by far our best attacking midfielder/passer. So we would have lost two players in one.
We have tried N’Dombele (what a waste of money) and Lo Celso (can’t shoot, can’t pass) and both have failed dismally to fill the void left by Christian Eriksen. Dele is trying hard to get back to form but he is not the natural midfield general but more of a Martin Peters type striker.
The transfer window is close to closing and we are still lumbered with Winks, Sissoko, Aurier, Doherty, Lo Celso and N’Dombele…all could go and soon be forgotten. But who will buy players who have shown they cannot or will not play to a reasonable standard?

  • TK says:

These players have to be sold for less than was paid to buy their contracts in the first place. Simply getting them off the payroll is an improvement. Keeping them around because DL can’t find the price he wants is wasting more money of salaries for players who are not contributing. Loaning them out to lower the salary bill would be a big improvement by itself.

Start selling Tottenham Stadium brew through Amazon. Load up the stadium with extra guns and roses concerts. (who buys those tickets?). but stop paying wages to stagnant players even if it means selling them at a loss.

As the Stoic philosopher said…. Oh, never mind.

TQ2Spurs – Aurier has one year left on his deal and has said he has no intention of signing a new one (not that the club would be interested anyways). So that’s a problem which is time-boxed. I see no reason why we couldn’t target a right back now.

For central midfield, it is indeed more complicated. Sissoko has two years left on his deal. The club rather inexplicably signed him to a 4 year deal in 2019. NDombele is under contract for a while as well, as is Winks.

In this area, I can understand the conundrum of needing to sell before we buy, given the uncertainty of those players being moved on in a timely manner.

I would still question why we committed to those players in the long term, when we did, but that’ another story…

  • Niall D says:

TK there in lies one of our many issues, why would a player on 100 grand p/w living in one of the most vibrant capitals of the world want to move to mainland Europe for 70 or so grand a week.
Also Mr Levy needs to remember that just like us COVID has laid waste to many club’s ambitions and fininces and players aren’t worth what they were pre COVID, (with some exceptions) so if he were to lower his price expectations we may get rid of 1 or 2 before next week.

  • 123spurs says:

Why don’t we keep sarr instead of loaning him back, he looks a lot better then winks.

  • 123spurs says:

    Kaptain Kane.

  • Love totty says:

Forget Traore or another striker, the reason we have struggled is because we never replaced Dembele or later Eriksen to control the midfield. That put pressure on what was a good defense and suddenly we couldn’t play from the back or control the midfield. Scoring has never been the issue though some games were tortuous to watch. We need a player who can dominate the midfield again.

  • 123spurs says:

It was always gonna be in the script. Fair play to winks

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I didn’t see any rubbish players HT, in fact I didn’t see any players…..couldn’t find a working stream again this week! 🙁

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Sissoko to Watford seems to have some legs.

  • 123spurs says:

TQ not far to walk so.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

123….no not far and his training centre would be the old gooners place next door to their new one at London Colney.

  • Niall D says:

    Good result tonite.
Gil looks a decent player though its hard to judge at home in a Euro game.
With that said we played well, hats off to TQ, (chapeau), it probably took those 1 or 2 first teamers to get us the result, however there were enough of the previous weeks team on the pitch to help their confidence.
