Match Thread – Spurs Set For A Turf Up Against Burnley

|

After another frustrating performance at the weekend against West Ham United, it’s safe to say Tottenham Hotspur fans can now settle in and expect nothing but inconsistency from this side for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign.

Nine games into the Premier League campaign we have won five and lost four, conceding more than our formerly high flying attack have scored and it seems safe to say that Nuno doesn’t do draws.

Given the performances we are now becoming accustomed to, the surprising thing is we are still sat in sixth place in the table, whilst debating whether or not former talisman Harry Kane should rest his backside on the bench for a bit given his individual performances.

Before we turn our eyes to Manchester United, this midweek we have a EFL Cup break and on Wednesday evening we make the trip to Turf Moor to face Sean Dyche’s Burnley side. We all know how this tie looks on paper and Burnley are way down in 18th spot, but they’ve only scored two fewer than we have and conceded two more.

This is unlikely to be pretty, it won’t be a classic but it will be tight. The only questions that actually matters are, will we be up for the fight and will Nuno make XI changes again and make us even more disjointed than we already are?

I really don’t know Danny, the worrying thing is……..I don’t think Nuno knows either!

  • Niall D says:

Hi Danny thanks for the thread, yet again.
    Good debate last one folks.
Re Burnley, I don’t know which 11 he can pick, as someone said earlier we seem to be slowly progressing defensively, there does seem to be a neucleus of a decent back 5, and with Skippy (quickly learning his trade) and Hoj just in front, we could make a decent defensive unit, I feel that if they got a bit of time to gel they could be alright. But time will tell…
The issue now is up front and who we play as a top 4.
Last season it was the other way round, we could score a few goals but couldn’t keep em out.
    Still hoping for a win.
I’m somewhere between playing 6 from Sundays game and 5 from Thursdays.
Or just trying the 11 from Sunday in hope to give them a mental boost + it may be our only chance of getting a trophy, so need to take it seriously.

    • PompeyYid says:

Niall, hoe ya doing mate, good I hope…
You mention a nucleus of a decent back 5, probably right there, but I have to ask will Hoj n Skippy be run into the ground, cos there is no one to replace them.

As for scoring more goal, so bloody true, but we need our so called goal scorers to start moving, get away from their pedestrian traits, look for space then maybe just maybe our mids have something to think about, as in through ball passing or moving forward themselves into space created by our now to static so called goal scorers.

As for tomorrow night up at Wet n Windy Burnley, lets have no Moore of Sundays antics. COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

I forgot about this game; they just keep coming! Let’s hope that playing at Turf Moor, we get moor of the turf than the other lot.

  • jod says:

We actually know what works, we did it or the first three games. Defend well and counter attack fast. It’s the counter attack fast bit we seem to have stopped doing and its not as if we don’t have the players to do it.

    • wentworth says:

Just watched Nuno’s post match reflections on W.Ham defeat. Not at all impressed. V. Poor English. Nice chap but totally out of his depth.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Have we really sunk so low, that we now are at a stage when our game plan against Burnley is to sit back and hit them on the counter?

On paper we have the players to run circles around Burnley. Shouldn’t that be the ambition?

  • Geofspurs says:

    BS …. Yes!

    • BelgianSpur says:

Is that a yes to “have we sunk so low” or a yes to “shouldn’t that be the ambition”?

      It’s a vastly different reaction :-).

  • Niall D says:

The answer from me BS is yes to just about everything you said there.
Our 2nd stream should even run rings round them.
But as I said last season, there appears to be a malaise around our club a cloud if you will.
Once we get one thing fixed another issue appears.
My hope is that Burnley eyes will be fixed on Premiership survival and not on the League Cup.
But in short for some reason we have sunk so low.
I’m now no longer sure on what our ambition is…

  • Geofspurs says:

BS …. Sorry, mate, it was aimed at the ambition bit. lol

  • PompeyYid says:

Have we sank so low 100% YES!, shouldn’t that be ambition! should be YES! and YES on paper we have the better/stronger team/side.

But we are Spurs at the moment so 3 YES’s means nout, only to us faithful fans.

Its going to be a rainy windy miserable night at Burnley’s Turf Moore, no disrespect to Burnley habitants, their team is made up of hard men, win or lose give it all….will our bunch of flowers, sorry players be able to face the adversity that Sean Dyche’s side will offer, or will they just wilt!

Hopefully we will stem the tide and stand tall. COYS

    • Parklaneyido says:

Been a while since I’ve been on here, but I didn’t think I was going to be drawn in by such poetry Pompey. Everything just seems so up in the air/uncertain with Tottenham on the pitch these days. Which team is going turn up and which team is going to play? Will any of the subs get on? I still hope Nuno pulls a rabbit out of the hat and we start playing and winning like we should, but Nu Nos? (Sorry – terrible pun, but couldn’t help it)!

  • PompeyYid says:

Danny thank you for another fine match thread. COYS

  • Arky says:

Imagine having to work for a boss who is utterly clueless, how motivated will you be to produce your most inspired work ? Anyone here ever worked under an inept superior ? How did you feel having to redo all your hard work ? Just a thought.

  • Arky says:

Hamster in a wheel comes to mind, doesn’t it ?

    • PompeyYid says:

now now Arky, don’t insult and bring Hamsters into it, at least they know what their doing and getting exercise for fitness, lol! COYS

  • Arky says:

Jod, you are so right but problem is that is the ONLY thing that works mate. Ever wonder why ?

BelgianSpur, you too are so right, we HAVE sunk to that level with our squad. Mismanagement ?

  • Niall D says:

PY trust you and Mrs PY are keeping well.
Sorry didn’t see your post earlier, re our forwards, if they stay up front and cause an outlet for our defence, we could be oon to something,
It was pointed out by these computer hot spot statistic thingys on TV (sky) that the likes of HK was more effective in both the Villa and particularly N/Castle games when he more or less stayed in his striker role, rather than dropping back, with that said probably N’Dombers was probably a better supplier which meant he didn’t need to drop back as much to be the ball player himself.
This team can improve, I just hope it comes soon.

  • jod says:

Arky – Actually no I don’t. In football you set your team up to make the best use of whatever you have in your squad. In our case that consists of competent defenders and an exceptional defensive screen in Hojbjerg and Skipp. Going forward we have a lot of pace in Son, Moura and Berwijn, oh and a centre forward who is completely out of form. As has been pointed out many times we don’t have a playmaker. So it seems to me the tactics become pretty clear, you use what you’ve got. It was obvious against West Ham that trying to play slow passing moves through the middle was just letting them get back into defensive shape, we played into their hands.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Niall I agree HK10 should be forward more.. but he is not getting the service he needs, so drops back looking for the ball. Ericson was the link we are desperately missing, tanguy is not consistent and has a lazy attitude one good game next half as good… not a £54m player performance. Lo Celso is another one as is dele, winks all under performing…

Nuno has to get his ideas across to the players, instil some confidence / respect and sprit, as they not fully playing for him. A few good wins are needed now, or we will not be in top 5 rest of the season. Nuno will be out in summer if not before, as we all know he was a choice Levy had to make at last minute after numerous rejections.

  • Allan says:

    Morning
Not entirely convinced that our defence is improving that much . In the last thread I outlined my concerns ref the defence . Reggie needlessly gave the ball away which led to the West Ham goal .
If we could keep the ball would help since apparently Moura gave the baal away on Sunday 25 times and he is not the only culprit .
If we are to win games we must beat the press which teams use against us successfully , pass correctly and show more urgency .
I wish my boss told me to take a week off work only to return less effective .
If we fail to beat Burnly I don’t know where we go from there .

  • wentworth says:

    Problems we have are:
No midfield general to take a grip on the game.
6th choice manager who is honourable but lacking.
Reliance heavily on Son and Kane who are clearly off form.
Poor subs bench and back up players.
We have no one who can cross the ball.
No young, star, enthusiastic players to liven things up.
We have lost our quick passing game.
One of worst teams in Prem with shots on goal.
    We lack a dominant captain.
However, we do have a smashing stadium.

    • PompeyYid says:

wentworth, you mentioned one of the worst teams in the Prem with shots on goal, so bloody true but to add to that we are bottom of the league for running, distance covered during games.

I agree with the rest of your comments but surely most of it could be rectified if our coach stood his ground and grew a pair.

I still believe there is a team in there somewhere! COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    WW……regarding two of your points:

We do have what I regard as a midfield general in Hojbjerg who IMHO opinion would also make a far better on-field captain than the current encumbent. What we lack is a manager who recognises this and isn’t afraid to put a few noses out of joint to do what is needed to change attitudes in the squad. I have never been convinced by Lloris as a leader of men, there has been many a time when he has led the players onto the pitch looking like a rabbit in headlights rather than someone demonstrating an air of confidence.

    • PompeyYid says:

TQ2S…regards your points on “on field Captain” and your feelings to our manager, what he should do, basically as I have said before “grow a pair”, completely agree with both, it would make a massive difference. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

By the way…….welcome back parklane, good to hear from you again, do stick around! :- )
