Match Thread – Spurs Roll The Dice Again Ahead Of Vitesse But You Wouldn’t Say Our Odds Have Improved

|

With Tottenham Hotspur registering back to back losses once again in the Premier League with the frustrating 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at the weekend, news on Monday of Nuno Espirito Santo’s departure from the club probably didn’t come as a great surprise to anyone.

Wherever you sit on the Nuno debate, there were obvious flaws with his handling of the group and with the players just not stepping up for him, there was a sense of unavoidable inevitability about it.

This of course means we now head into preparations for our Group G clash with Vitesse managerless as the merry-go-round has once again begun, and after October’s slip up against them, we simply couldn’t stomach another defeat if we hope to try and top the table.

With speculation returning about talks being held with Antonio Conte, whether he (or a new face) will be in place by Thursday is open to debate but whoever it is has got a massive job on their hands.

What will be will be, as the ditty goes, we just have to hope our next gamble pays off because the decision makers aren’t going to sack themselves are they.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Ndombele was easily the best on ground yet again, with Lo Celso a close second. Nobody spends more time on the ground than those two!!

  • 123spurs says:

Attackers aren’t the only ones not to have a shot on goal

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I’m baffled as to why Rodon isn’t played on the left of the three CB’s, he always plays well in a back three for Wales. He has always played well when called on but three managers now don’t seem to fancy him.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof…….I think that’s down to the fact they try to dribble past defenders and get fouled a lot.

Did you watch our WSL game today? We are definitely a different proposition under Rehanne Skinner.

  • `Allan says:

    hi guys
Not sure I saw all negatives today I thought that some of our beating the press was an improvement but why do top players keep making poor decisions when in the opposition’s penalty area ?
With better and accurate passing we might have increased our shot tally and even scored .
Why can Lo Celso produce a blinding shot then 2 minutes later he delivers a rubbish corner esp . when they are down to 10 men .
Much more work Mr Conte and I feel that you’ll improve the side .
Look where we were when Harry took charge and where did we end up ?
Niall wasn’t Lo Celso a right to buy player ?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

PL managers are dropping like flies this season, I bet not many thought so many would go before OGS.

  • Niall D says:

Well folks on the positive side, we didn’t concede any, I think each team sort of cancelled the other out.
For us we’re currently a team low on confidence and in transition, what’s, Everton’S excuse.
So there is work for Conte to do, but I do think he can do something.
Allan re Lo Ceslo, he’s a borderline fixable for me, he does turn out good performances for the national side, so who knows, but so far he has been tepid for us.
But indeed he was a loan to buy, one of Poch’s many argentine acquisitions, not all were a raging success. I believe at this time he was offered other players but didn’t want em, Tielemans springs to mind. I’ve already spoken at length about our questionable scouting team.
In short m8 you don’t always get it right.

  • Niall D says:

BTW some result for the Spammers so far today, couple that with Burnley result yesterday, anybody can get points against any one in this league, that’s, why it’s the best in the world. 😉

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Definitely a few unexpected results this weekend, currently watching my home city club St. Albans just a couple of minutes from knocking leage two leaders Forest Green Rovers out of the FA Cup. 🙂

  • TQ2Spurs says:

YESSSS……..at least there was one bright spot today. To be fair though our ladies put in a solid performance today against United.

  • 123spurs says:

Niall you also forgot the other lot, lost 1st 3 games and now sitting 5th. 13 point turn around in 8 games.

  • wentworth says:

The other reason TQ25 is that Lo Celso is very lightweight and gets blown over very easily when he should be riding tackles. Also he can’t kick a ball for toffee with his one good leg and fails to use his other leg. I cannot find anything that he offers after79 appearances other than his shuffling run.
We have to bite the bullet and offload at least 8 players who are never going to get beyond mediocre. It was not that long ago..pre new stadium… that we had an all dominant team with top players in every position. We were running games and scoring goals. Currently only Norwich are worse than us.

  • wentworth says:

What on earth was Conte doing bringing on Doherty and Lo Celso?…He obviously does not know the players yet. My heart sank. Were we playing for a 0-0 draw?
But I suppose we have very little in reserve. What has happened to the once mighty Spurs. Very average first team squad and very poor second string. So much work to do. Does Levy realise we have to invest in new players. The present bunch are no where near good enough and are mid table at best. ( 9 goals scored is abysmal).

  • 123spurs says:

9 goals could be considered a good return when most games we can get a shot on goal

  • TQ2Spurs says:

WW…..we are well aware of your opinion of Lo Celso, you repeat it often enough. lol

Argentina are hardly short of creative midfielders yet he starts regularly for them and gets lauded for his performances. I can only think we don’t play him regularly enough or in his best position.

Conte went too cautious for me today, we should have started with one of Ndombele or Lo Celso behind Son and Moura and dropped/rested Kane.

  • Niall D says:

123 yep I noticed that about Arse, however their bubble will burst.
Another thing we need to bear in mind, which was bad luck for Nuno, this has been one of our most difficult first games with us playing many “expected top 10 teams in our first matches.
We’re in for an easier run now, so we may get some pints on the board.

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. I did watch the game. Spurs are certainly progressing but I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t get something out of it. I think there needs to be a bit more running off the ball to give more options going forward, and we need to be quicker with the easy passes instead of holding the ball too long and getting caught with it. But the coaching is taking effect. It could be a very good season.

Someone said Konte probably doesn’t know the players. Probably?? Of course he doesn’t, he just walked through the door. I expect he is being advised (Mason?) until he gets his own take on things in training. It’s going to take a few games for the effect of that to show.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof…but we did get something out of it, did your stream end before our late goal? 🙂

  • TQ2Spurs says:

We are nearly a third of the way through the PL season and persist in playing Kane who has given pretty much nothing, how long are we going to play him in the hope something is suddenly going to click and he will start scoring consistently again? I would rather play Son in the striker role even though he isn’t exactly setting the world on fire, and giving Dele a game in the 10 role. It can’t be any worse than we are currently being served up.

    • BelgianSpur says:

The fact that Alli was dropped from a matchday squad recently, and still can’t get a game despite Kane’s lack of production, should probably tell us all we need to know about Alli’s current mindset.

Nuno was the 3rd manager who has questioned Dele’s commitment to football. How many chances does HE get?

I can accept people questioning whether Kane deserves an automatic start at the minute, but not if the suggested alternative is Alli. At the very least, we don’t have to go back much farther than last season to remember a time when Kane was bossing the PL. We have to go back several years to say the same for Alli.

Given the choice between those 2, I’d continue playing Kane without any doubt.

      • TQ2Spurs says:

BS….I think I had consumed too much wine when I suggested playing Dele instead of Kane. 🙂

I did post earlier that we could have played Ndombele or Lo Celso behind a front two of Son and Moura, how much longer do we persist with starting Kane when he just isn’t performing? It’s surely only down to the fact we don’t have another experienced number 9 that he is still getting picked.

I felt Conte was too cautious playing seven defenders and only three attackers. A six and four split would have been better with one of Skipp or Hojbjerg being replaced by one of the two mentioned above. I really don’t see the need for two DM’s when you are playing three centre backs.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Like I expected, I think Conte will begin by making us hard to beat – ie the pragmatic football I referred to a few days ago.

This was a prime example of that, IMO. We’re a work in progress but it’ll take a bit of time to start seeing the hard work pay off. In general, a point away at Everton is not a bad result, and we should have no expectations of beating that level of team away from home at the moment.

Our next PL games against Leeds, Burnley, Brentford, Norwich and Brighton will be far better indicators of how we’re doing and how Conte wants to approach this season.

  • Niall D says:

Yes Goeff that was probably my statement, I said that I guess he barely knows their names.
So trying to instill any tactical process in less than a week is pie in the sky.
But we didn’t concede, as I said Everton are “on paper” a top half team with good players, we are in transition, we can and I think under Conte certainly will improve our performances and results between now and Christmas.
See these fekin international breaks aarrrggghh.
Why don’t we as Arsen says give over a month in October to internationals and get it over with. (Fek)
