Given the turmoil at Tottenham Hotspur over the summer, few expected us to open up the 2021/22 campaign with such a flourish as we left Pep Guardiola crying into his Grecian 2000 (or is it Grealish £100million?) with a thoroughly well deserved victory on Sunday.
In the absence of Harry ‘will he, won’t he’ Kane, players stepped up and performed admirably against the reigning title holders and the ever reliable Son Hueng-Min secured us the win ten minutes into the second half.
It was a confidence booster and as we go into Thursday’s laughable Europa Conference League clash with Pacos de Ferreira, few will be expecting any difficulties as long as we again perform how we did on Sunday.
We might even have Kane back as he’s been named in the squad by manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Two wins from two would set us up nicely for Nuno’s first return to Molineux at the weekend and it would certainly raise spirits with ongoing transfer sagas.
BelgianSpur Fair enough. I have reservations over Witsel, he’s not always looked convincing in German football and I’m not sure how he’d do in the premier league where he’d have less time on the ball. The others are obviously class players. The question though is would those players have come to Spurs ? With City and Liverpool making the offers probably not. Really you should be looking for an example where a player went to a smaller club.
I’m not sure how Spurs were supposed to foretell the future in respect of Lamela’s injuries. He would have had all the normal medical tests and at that stage of his career there was no reason to think he was any more likely to pick up injuries than any other player.
Witsel has been an unquestinable starter for one of the biggest clubs in Germany. Whatever reservations you may have, different Dortmund managers have not had.
No way of knowing how he’d fare in the PL, but considering he’s been an asset in Belgium, Portugal, Russia, Germany (I won’t mention China) and the Belgian national team (keeping players such as Tielemans out of the starting 11), I would say it’s a testament to his quality.
Frank – Still no clue I see. We don’t actually want to sell Kane, therefore it is up to City to come up with the full amount or he stays our player. While City were happy to do that with Grealish they are trying to buy Kane on the cheap, what does that tell you ? Why not stop talking crap for a while and try and get in touch with reality.
Last night definitely proved that the squad needs to be strengthened. With no takers for our duds (and their performance in Portugal didn’t help matters) this can only be done now by letting Harry go in time for deals to be done before the deadline. If Levy leaves it till the last minute we will be getting the worst of both worlds, no Harry and a poor squad to draw upon. In this situation an injury to Sonny could completely wreck our scoring potential until the next transfer window at least. Likewise injuries to our present backs could scupper our defensive and wing back possibilities, (both Doherty and Davies were awful last night).
As far as signing a replacement striker, we have a pretty dismal record namely Vinicius, Janssen, Soldado, Campbell, Saha, Llorente for example. Levy always seems to look for the cheap option with his fingers crossed. Luckily Kane was home grown and came good after a dodgy start.
If Kane’s deal goes through at the 11th hour, we are stuffed. If he stays, will he be able to put this sorry saga behind home until the next window when his price starts to drop.
Why would you sell a player with no paln in place for a replacement, if that’s the case, levy should be fired. City should be helping us find a good replacement.
If it goes to the last hours, hold city out, they won’t get kane but we will.
With 11 days to go in the window, we have clearly got no where near addressing the weaknesses in our squad. Still no decent right back – accepted that Tanganga had one good game against City, still unreliable centre-halves, still no creativity in midfield (it is clear that Tanguy and Le Celso are not going to work – Tanguy seems to have no interest in even getting fit and Le Celso flatters to deceive and other than Son (maybe Kane) there are vritualy no goals or assists from anywhere in the team – Dele has stopped creating or scoring and Moura and Bergjwin rarely score.
Paratici has a lot of work to – several players we need to offload with seemingly no takers and several positions that need addressing with no money to spend (unless we sell Kane) and no players of the quality we need willing to come to Spurs. good luck Fabio.
Regarding last nights game and the apathy towards the Europa conference League, I am afraid to say that is the level we are at at the moment. we are a million miles away from being able to challenge for a Champions League position.
If the right money is offered for Kane we will sell irrespective of whether we can find a suitable replacement and irrespective of the narrative coming out of the club that he is not for sale – we’ve herd that one before.. History tell us that is the case.
So far I’m questioning whether City even want Kane. When you contrast the speed with which they paid £100m for Grealish with their lowball offers for Kane I do wonder if they are serious. If they do make a serious eleventh hour bid there’s no guarantee Levy will accept it.
DoncasterHotspur – Out of curiosity I’m going to keep a copy of your detailed and doom laden comment and see how it lines up with what actually happens this season.
It’s just the frustration of getting deals over the line, I’m now fed up looking at “Spurs Transfer Rumors”
now as there’s barely a player out there we haven’t been linked with.
Yet the players we want out can’t get a dog to bark at them.
Looks like DH may be right, we’ll sell Kane on the last day of the TW, and Levey will go to the top floor “rubbing his gloved fingers Fagan like, whilsling” I’m reviewing the, situation” the money will disappear into the Enic coffers never to be spent on players, Paraticis (the Artful Dodger) will put the best light on a bad situation, “consider yourself well feked”
Mean while we’ll be like poor “Oliver” looking for more. 😭
Jod – please do that. It will be interesting to see how the season goes. In my opinion it is not doom laden it is just realistic.of course with 11 days to go in the window, things could change. Right now I m not optimistic.
jod – In the end we can all find mitigating circumstances for every transfer but there is no getting around that the proof is in the pudding.
Our transfer strategy has not systematically delivered, and it just seems like you always have an excuse to try to justify why the club couldn’t do a better job. While I can accept that there is always the benefit of hindsight, trying to do the same thing over and over is unlikely to deliver better results.
