Match Thread – Spurs Looking For A Peppy Performance Against City

|

With another dull and pointless international break coming to an end for Tottenham Hotspur fans, the Premier League in particular now have to work out how to bubble the players again given the positive Covid tests we’ve seen from players coming out of their bubbles to line the pockets of the domestic authorities and of course, UEFA.

With the proper game back, if we can call it that, Spurs are set to host Pep Guardiola’s struggling Manchester City side this Saturday and everyone will be hoping for another White Hart Lane based three points to keep our positive start to the 2020/21 campaign going.

If results go our way in this weekends round of fixtures, we could even top the table!

Having paid little to no attention to football for the last couple of weeks, I’ve no idea where we are on injuries but that will become clear on Thursday or Friday when Jose Mourinho addresses the press but according to PhysioRoom we have five doubts with Erik Lamela, Tanguy Ndombele, Steven Bergwijn and Japhet Tanganga all set for late fitness tests for a possible Saturday return – but Matt Doherty is out as he’s self isolating.

We shall see who is fit and ready for battle.

Hi Niall……..don’t take these as definitive answers just my take on the scenarios:

I can’t recall a goalie coming on as an outfield substitute but I would be surprised if it hasn’t happened at some point in history, my only query is whether they would be allowed to play in their goalie top, I think not, at least not nowadays, and they would have to wear an outfield shirt. I’m not sure how strict the rules are on shirt numbers so can’t say if they would have to have a shirt with their own squad number or whether they could have a random number as long as it’s unique on the pitch, I think the former would probably apply now.

With regards to the ball rebounding from the goal frame……I can’t see this would be any different from the ball coming back from a goalie save and rebound, as long as the ball hasn’t gone out of play. I can’t see how it would be regarded as offside even if another player subsequently scores, as long as they hadn’t encroached the area before the original kick was taken.

Sorry……I didn’t have a postcard so just stuck it on here! 🙂

    Cheers TQ
Just thought that if the goalie saves it, it’s like the opposition playing it, where by if it comes off the post /Bar, the opposition then hasn’t touched it, it’s back in play but there’s no one playing the former pen taker onside so to speak.
    Just my thoughts.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I’m not sure Niall, my view is that it would be the same as it coming back off a defender. I’m sure someone will come back with the definitive answer.

Niall…had a few minutes to spare so did some “Googling” haha regards GK’s playing on field = 3 times

1 In 1872, lol! England v Scotland, England GK Robert Barker swapped to play up front in 2nd half, William Maynard moved back.

2 In late 60’s early 70’s Dave Latchford(GK) swapped places with his brother Rod(CF) because he had hurt his hand.

3 In a testimonial Tommy Lawrence(GK) played on the wing haha.

    Couldn’t find anymore. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Sadly I remember both Dave Latchford (and his brother Bob the Everton legend) and also Liverpool’s Tommy Lawrence! :- )

  • Niall D says:

    Cheers PY
    Remember Bob Latchford.
My uncle was an Everton supporter.
    Thanks for the info.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Looks like there could be some fans in soon then, maybe in time for the NLD? Imagine the scramble for the relatively small number of tickets! :- )

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Niall, if the penalty taker scores from a rebounded penalty take hitting the post or crossbar, without the keeper touching the ball, the goal should be disallowed. But not because of any offside rule.

A penalty is treated the same as any free-kick. The player taking the free -kick or penalty cannot touch the ball again until another player has made contact with it. Otherwise a free-kick should be given to the opposition.

So if Harry hits a penalty shot against the bar and he heads in the rebound; no goal should be given and the other team will gain possession with an indirect free-kick.

This happened to me as a goalkeeper long ago. And I’m pretty sure the rule hasn’t changed.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

If that’s the case HT what if Kane takes the spot kick, hits the post, and the ball rebounds to say Sonny who puts it in the net. Assuming he hadn’t encroached the area before the kick was taken would the goal stand?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Just had a quick scan of the laws and you are right HT, the kicker cannot touch the ball again until it has been touched by another player. I couldn’t see anything to suggest the goal wouldn’t stand in the scenario I described in my last post.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Yes TQ… We could celebrate yet another Son goal. But, does Harry then get another assist attributed to him? Or is it given to the goalpost?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    lol…..good question HT!

  • PompeyYid says:

HT….My remembrance of that penalty law, kicker hitting post, correctly he then can only touch it after another has touched the ball, as TQ suggested the another player can put it in the net, got to admit all these queries gets you thinking.

I also think in the scenario of Harry hitting post n Son scoring off the post rebound, I believe it is another assist for Harry. lol! COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It occurred to me this morning….it has gone very quiet on the Dele front, you often hear lots of noise coming from agents and journos in this kind of situation.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I can remember many moons ago, watching some match highlights on tv. I can’t remember the teams playing or players involved. But a penalty was taken, it cannoned off the crossbar (I think), straight back into the path of the penalty taker. He ducked to avoid touching the ball, the ball went over his head and his team mate smashed in to the roof of the net to score…

  • TQ2Spurs says:

That certainly showed good awareness by the penalty taker HT.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

If we don’t see Dele even make it onto the the bench on Thursday, then he’s either in hiding, done a runner or Jose has locked him up in a room somewhere waiting for the January TW to come and see Dele’s exit from the Spurs….

We could perhaps sell him back to the MK Dons for a small profit. Say, £6.5 m?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I’m not sure he is worth that little HT. :- )

If he is sold I don’t think he will fetch the kind of money he might have done a year or two ago, but even if we could make £30-40m it would still be a very good return and would be sufficient to get a pretty decent centre back which I think we still need to replace Toby in the future.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Believe it or not, after typing into Google this long sentence; “player ducks after penalty hits bar and his team mate scores from the rebound”… I found some blurry footage of it on youtube. 😉
