Match Thread – Spurs Looking For A Peppy Performance Against City

|

With another dull and pointless international break coming to an end for Tottenham Hotspur fans, the Premier League in particular now have to work out how to bubble the players again given the positive Covid tests we’ve seen from players coming out of their bubbles to line the pockets of the domestic authorities and of course, UEFA.

With the proper game back, if we can call it that, Spurs are set to host Pep Guardiola’s struggling Manchester City side this Saturday and everyone will be hoping for another White Hart Lane based three points to keep our positive start to the 2020/21 campaign going.

If results go our way in this weekends round of fixtures, we could even top the table!

Having paid little to no attention to football for the last couple of weeks, I’ve no idea where we are on injuries but that will become clear on Thursday or Friday when Jose Mourinho addresses the press but according to PhysioRoom we have five doubts with Erik Lamela, Tanguy Ndombele, Steven Bergwijn and Japhet Tanganga all set for late fitness tests for a possible Saturday return – but Matt Doherty is out as he’s self isolating.

We shall see who is fit and ready for battle.

Man City...

Of course HT, it was a terriic team performance and it does seem a bit mean to single out a small number of players.

    *terrific…..blooming sticky keys!

We are currently at our best as a counter attacking team, City had two thirds of the possession and we won 2-0, I’m not sure how many people still think possession is a meaningful statistic. The thing is its hard to counter attack when the opposition come to defend and and pack their third of the pitch. So it shouldn’t really be a surprise if games against struggling teams seem to be harder than they should be and games against top teams seem easier than they should be. Of course if we could come up with a Plan B against those teams that come to defend it would help, play Kane and Vinicius maybe ?

I’ve always been a fan of Jose!!. It really was classic Jose today, the longer the game went on the more comfortable we were. Every player was superb, they have clearly brought into Jose which is more than you can say for me – ha ha. Chelsea next – onwards and upwards.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I have to applaud you DH, you make your views on Jose’s tactics and management style very clear but you don’t slink away and hide when his tactics pull off a win like tonights.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Credit where it is due – TQ2Spurs. Everyone was absolutely superb today, even Jose. It was a joy to watch every single one of the buying into what Jose wants. Not seen that in a long time from a Spurs team.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Before todays game I was thinking that 4 points from our three games versus City, Chelsea and Arsenal would be a good return, I have now raised my expectation and reckon 7 points is achievable.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Manu get another debatable penalty that they are allowed to take twice after the first is saved.

Welcome to the party (some of you)
At last you are getting it.
It may not be just as nice, but it brings the result.
It’s not all about charging” Lite Brigade “like toward the goal as we have seen with Man C today and with ourselves in previous seasons.
Whilst the stats may look good, (for City) it actually doesn’t bring the required result and doesn’t really manage the game does it.
Bearing in mind we actually had the ball in the net 3 Times. They at best had it once.
I seem to remember someone on these pages saying JM’s tactics were outdated.
    Who was it?
    Come on own up.
We’re top of the league folks.
This is certainly much better than any of us expected.
Let’s enjoy it if only for the short term.
    Come On Ye Spurs.

  • Pauric says:

Well it was classic mourinho style and carried out by the players. I have to be honest I’ve not seen that many full games this season only highlights hence why I haven’t commented on this site. I call it as I see it and to be honest all credit mourinho and the players they worked there socks off to get that result and thoroughly deserved it and yes kane was excellent but I taught our fullbacks where the unsong heroes especially Aurier I taught he was excellent especially in the first half. Let’s be honest it’s the opposite of total football but when Levy hired Mourinho he and we as fans knew exactly what we where getting, 1 a proven winner, 2 not liked bye most football fans, 3 not a football purist but as I said a proven winner but with questions been asked was he yesterday’s man. I did not want him as our manager but you have to credit him for the team ethic and cohesion he’s brought.

  • Niall D says:

    TQ
    Re Man U noticed that.
They get a dodgy pen the player tried to turn his whole body away. How is that a hand ball?
Then they get 2 digs at it.
Plus a decent claim by WBA turned down.
It’s not a fix you know.
WBA could’ve and should’ve had something from that game.
    Similarly Villa/Brighton could’ve been a draw.
There are no real gimmes in this league folks.
I hope all the recent converts become aware of this.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Niall……the match commentator gave out a stat that United have been awarded 44 penalties in the last 127 games, I’m not sure how this compares to other PL teams but I wouldn’t mind betting they top the table! :- )

  • 123spurs says:

Solid, organised, belief, tactics, VAR all done their jobs today. Clean sheet also to add, A massive 3 points. Jose “out” classed pep.

  • jod says:

Its very noticeable when you look at the league table that ourselves and Chelsea are sitting at the top of the league with a goal difference of +12 while City, United and Arsenal all have a goal difference of -1. Its partly about scoring more goals but its also about defending better. The bad news of course is we might be without Alderweireld for some time. We’ll have to see how that affects the defence.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Morning after the night before… Im pleased spurs won 2-0, and not 2-1 as i guessed 🙂

As we are seeing now, jose has had 1 year of his tactical training and instilling mental fortitude and belief into the players. Also a variety of game plans depending on opponents, which poch didn’t have sadly. I have said before i back jose to win silverware with spurs, and yesterday was another step forward. The critics of jose are now silent in a good way, and john barnes comments this week was just trying to undermine spurs, and support liverpool, which i can understand, however think he is a tosser lol. • block 108 spurs says:

Having seen MOD I agree with Ian Wright in that penalty poditioning of goal keppers not moving off the line until the ball is kicked… should be reflected upon the penalty taker, in that he has to run up and kick the ball in one movement. Not stop, or jump and then kick the ball. PL & FA should rule upon this asap.

West Brom player turning away from the ball and not knowing where it was going. So not a penalty.. as in erick dier case a while ago.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Penalty wards are becoming a bit of a lottery both for handball and fouls in the box. Michael Oliver made a good decision in his match, the Brighton player got a definite touch on the ball which changed it’s direction and Trezeguet made a drama out of what was either minimal or possibly no contact at all if viewed from the best angle.

West Brom on the other hand were on the end of two poor decisions, firstly they should have been awarded one for the Fernandes tackle on Gallagher, you can’t really say he played the ball, his studs barely grazed it as he kicked the WBA player on the shin causing him to lose balance and fall. On the other hand, I thought refs were now going to use discretion when deciding handball from close range and arm position, there was no way this instance would have been regarded as deliberate handball under the old rules and the penalty shouldn’t have been given IMHO.

Back to Spurs……the confidence gained from our win yesterday should see us go into the next few games feeling very positive, I see us winning by some margin on Thursday as a result.

  • PompeyYid says:

Well its the day after an amazing win for ourselves, I am still amazed, chuffed to bits, and getting even more confident about us, that is if I can as I always have been.

Our Spurs are looking like “battle hardened vets” all reading from the same hymn book, brilliant!

The defence and defending by the whole team was excellent, ok because of MC’s possession I was a little bit mmm! in the 1st half, nervous if you like, but then the 2nd half came along and I thought to myself why am I nervous because we controlled the game brilliantly.

Mom = “Our Arry” captain and leader, he was immense, but how hard was it to pick one player out of that total team display, even when the subs came on, LoCelso I salute you sir with your first touch – GOAL.

Dier, Alders, superb, the two fullbacks ditto, and what about Hoj n Sissoko, excellent, everybody believes in the system and played like it.

But note the 2 marmite players Aurier n Sissoko, both excellent.

Son, yet another goal, Bergy, N’Dombele all worked so hard, defending and attacking.

“Our Arry” need I say anymore about him, no, he was brilliant.

    JM himself was excellent.

So now bring them all on, we have no fear, let them fear us. COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

For me, the two ‘penalty’ decisions made in the MU vs WBA match were correct ones.

I don’t think that it was at all clear cut that Gallagher was fouled. (I thought he went down before he was touched).

And the WBA handball was a sure one for me. His hand was above shoulder height and I thought it also looked deliberate anyway. And by the rules, it was also correct that it was retaken.

But this is it again. It’s still often down to the subjective view of the ref. When we see that there is nearly always disagreement from people, on these calls.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Even though I called it yesterday, the tactics that I thought Jose should/would use. (Not really unsurprising from him). I then went on to say that many of our players might be weary from their travels etc., on International duty. I thought that being ultra-strong defensively and then having to be swift on the counter might be overtaxing for them.

So, what impressed me a lot is that they all (as a man) looked sharp and full of energy. In fact we seemed to get stronger as they looked to weaken in the second half. Which given our tactics was very encouraging. Because we had to put a hell of a lot of effort and hard work to play those tactics from start to finish.

But, Chelsea will be different again. So maybe a different approach will be needed from Jose…… ?

  • jod says:

If you look at us and Chelsea the goals scored and goals conceded is virtually identical. I’m not sure what tactics Jose can come up with that Lampard isn’t familiar with. Its more about who plays better on the day.
