Match Thread – Spurs Aim To Pick Up Where They Left Off As We Take A Trip To Palace

|

Well, this has been a different type of international window for fans of Tottenham Hotspur but finally we can turn our attentions back to the football that really matters – it’s Crystal Palace next up on Saturday in the early kick off slot.

Harry Kane continued his form for England and that can only serve us well following on from the summer nonsense, but there are definite concerns when it comes to Giovani Lo Celso and Christian Romero given all the shenanigans we’ve seen from Argentina.

Particularly as reports have already indicated that Lionel Scaloni intends to keep the duo for all three games, which brings in quarantine and further disruptions to our plans.

Otherwise, it should be a case of ‘as we were’ for gaffer Nuno Espirito Santo, as we will be looking to extend our three game winning streak and keep our noses ahead at the top of the Premier League table for as long as we can, and we should be confident of doing just that given Palace’s mixed start to the 2021/22 campaign.

All eyes to team news later in the week and hopefully there won’t be any disappointing surprises.

Palace...

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Looks like Lo Celso and Romero have now been released.

  • PompeyYid says:

    Thanks Danny for another thread.

Well, CP away on Saturday, another win, another clean sheet, thus still top of Prem till next wkend, even if its only for now lol! but who knows? COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

    0 – 3! Why not?

    Cheers Danny

Palace have had major squad changes over the summer but Viera has got them pretty well organised after just a couple of games. Their last game saw them achieve a hard fought draw against an in-form spammers side at the taxpayers stadium. Another 1-0 win will do for me, anything more would be a bonus. I’m a bit concerned that we will likely have to rely on just two CB’s, one of which has had little game time so far this season.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

It all seems a bit of a mess in the lead up to Saturday’s game with the early kick-off adding to the problem.

We are missing half of our CB’s and a MF due to isolation, we have anything up to 4 players potentially returning from international duty with injuries that may rule them out, and others who will have less than 48 hours recovery from when they report back at Hotspur Way.

Doesn’t sound too encouraging does it, but looking on the bright side we have a nucleus of players who have been working hard on their fitness levels during the break who, together with the fit players returning, can form a very decent starting eleven. My one concern is at CB where it looks like we will have to rely on Dier and Rodon who lacks match fitness, I suppose Nuno could be tempted to play Tanganga at RCB with Emerson or Doherty at RB but I don’t think he fits well there.

This is and has been my point on international games, they mess up the whole timetable and to a degree leve certain teams at an extreme disadvantage when the league resumes, they should play these games at a set time, for me when the season is at an end between world cups and Euros, I know this may not suit some, but given the upset it causes, I feel its the least worst option.
Why can’t we get a by for this weekend due to COVID like Villa did last season, we could play the game a bit later in the season.
After all it is leaving us where many of our first team players aren’t available due to COVID restrictions.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Niall, good to see you, it was getting pretty lonely on here. 🙂

I can’t believe Wenger is proposing a world cup every two years! It’s just greed, wanting to make a fast buck for the FIFA cronies while burning out players.

  • Niall D says:

    TQ
Typical of FIFA, I can’t see why we don’t play our qualifying almost as a mini competition between years it would make better sense, it would put an end to this stop start business of the league, when players have to go half way round the world for two games, it would also give the players greater time to gel together and actually play better as a team, it could mean less injuries as players are not jumping from one training mode to another, it would also give us something viable to watch at the close of the season, rather than silly international friendlies.
    Danny Cheers for the thread.
Re Saturday, not over impressed with the timing, and Palace are doing well or steady under new management, not sure how many they will have out of their first 11 because of internationals.
However hoping we’ll still have too much for them, I’ll even take another 1-0.COYS

  • block 108 spurs says:

Yes we have been affected by these badly timed internationals. I have to say… Poland should have had 2sent off for two yellow cards deliberate and consistent fouling on england players.

Nuno could go with Japhet and new guy royle as RCB & RB as TQ2 said. I hope Hk10 ankles are ok, at least he has a lot of strapping on them now to lessen the kicks on them. J Grelish should take note of harrys ankle injuries and protect himself .. when he plays for England 🙂

Palace game will be another tough game a 2-0 win will be a good result for spurs. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    Wow…..buzzing on here today then…..not. 🙂

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Really looking forward to seeing Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher, I picked him out as one for the future when he was on loan at WBA last season. Wish we were being linked with a move for him rather than Rudiger, he scored 2 against the spammers in Palace’s last PL game and gave a winning performance in midfield for England U21’s the other day.

  • jod says:

So we play Palace with not only a host of injuries but our Argentinians on holiday in Croatia. Meanwhile all those South American players who obeyed their clubs and didn’t travel are available to play. I have to ask whether players like Romero and Lo Celsco who appear to care little for the welfare of the club that pays their wages have the right attitude, regardless of talent.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Sanchez (along with Romero and Lo Celso), also went against the clubs wishes by travelling to play for Colombia. And as he has been a first teamer in the 1st 3 PL matches, he will be the one we miss most…. What can we do?!

    Nuno’s Starting Eleven?

    Doherty Tanganga Dier Reguilon
    Hojbjerg Skipp Dele

Winks to start, if Skipp isn’t ready…
    Lucas Kane Gil

  • Hot Tottingham says:

In stark contrast to Hodgson’s Palace, Vieira likes to set up his teams to defend/press high, and play a possession based game. With a starting formation that’s usually a 433.

With (hopefully) Gil and Lucas, Dele and Kane to attack them, with some swift front-foot countering, maybe we can exploit the high press and take good advantage. (If that’s how Palace do indeed set-up).

I would love to see Gil start this one. I feel it could be the ideal match to get his first full PL initiation. He could well be our shinning star today and light up Selhurst Park.

I’m going for a Spurs win, of course. 🙂

    Eagles 0-4 Cockerels!

    But, 0-1 will do…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    I’ve just remembered Rodon!

So maybe he can play in place of Sanchez and Tanganga will retain the RB position?

Is Rodon fit enough to be starting? Has he been in full training?

    We’ll find out soon enough….

    Up the Spurs!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Nuno could surprise us all and go for Emerson at RB, that would be some welcome to the PL going up against Zaha. :- )

  • TQ2Spurs says:

HT….Rodon was available for Wales in their last match but didn’t get on the pitch. My understanding is that he has fully recovered from the injury and is training but of course has no match fitness. Would it be any more of a gamble bringing him in at LCB and moving Dier to the right than it would playing Tanganga at RCB?

  • wentworth says:

This a great chance for Dele to really step up and show us what he can do. Just hope Skipp is available.
Do not really want Winks and Doherty (Zaha will torture him) holding us up. Keep them on the bench for running down the clock.
Our problems with players missing is showing our lack of depth. Maybe Bryan Gil will show he is a match winner. Also if Lucas plays, we will need him to put their defence under pressure.
If we win this, our season start will be miraculous.

    • Love totty says:

Can we change the habits of a Spurs lifetime and actually defend our position as league leaders? Only a determined effort will see us win this with the momentum having been lost. COYS

  • wentworth says:

Wow. They shall not pass! What a defensive lineup. Hmm. Will Winks be able to cope with the responsibility of passing the ball forward?
As I have said, a great chance for Dele to step up and play further forward. Lucas needs to worry their defence. Pleased to see Emerson…big test for him against Zaha. COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Had to happen in the circumstances, when did we last lose a CB to injury in the game never mind the first 10 minutes. Lloris should be feeling rather responsible for it.
