Match Thread – Proper Football Returns So It’s Time For Spurs To Blow The Hammers Away

|

After another dull and boring international break as many of us ignored the serially uninspiring Gareth Southgate stick with his preferred 1-7-0-3 formation for England, the positives for Tottenham Hotspur were both rest and no further injuries that I noted.

With the Premier League return this weekend, Sunday sees us welcome the Appy Ammers to White Hart Lane and manager Jose Mourinho will be hoping to see his side build on our solid recent victories, particularly the 6-1 thumping of Manchester United.

On an injury front, there’s some hope and expectation we can get a first glimpse of the returning Gareth Bale. Giovani Lo Celso and Eric Dier should also come back into contention as well, but according to PhysioRoom.com Japhet Tanganga will again be missing.

Spurs’ own injury update in the next day or two should clear things up.

Despite West Ham having joy ahead of the break with victory over Leicester City, we need to keep our own momentum going and jumping ourselves to ten points would begin opening up that gap in the table, even if it’s still very early days in the campaign.

West Ham...

Win

Draw

Lose

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

I had to laugh at Danny’s headline for this match thread. With the words “Proper Football” in the title…

It’s West Ham United, 2020 version we are playing! No Hurst, Peters and Moore to be seen! Proper football, Ha!? What wiv Moyes and his 5-4-1 tactics! No way!

Spurs would need to be playing, er… Spurs, for the football to be seen as real “proper”! Surely!

    Only joshing!

    • Danny Winter says:

That’s a very fair point, excellently made HT – I hadn’t considered that angle, I was just referencing the bore-fest that is the national side!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I didn’t see any International football Danny. But, as an England supporter it was boring enough just reading about how dull it all was! 🙂

    • Danny Winter says:

I quite enjoyed the Welsh game, but I should’ve guessed Southgate would return to type and I lasted 10 minutes at best. Just pleased our lads didn’t play every minute like normal, although obviously Dier is a doubt.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Good result for us at Goodison, just need Villa to beat Leicester (because the former is likely to fall away over the season) the toons to deliver another 6-1 defeat for Manu and for City to give the gooners a good tonking! 🙂

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Who was it that said the Pool and Klopp (with some very shrewd transfer dealing) had finally sorted out their defensive weaknesses of 3 or so seasons ago?! Probably all of us. As they did!

And yet so far this season, and in just 5 matches, they have already conceded 13 goals. That’s 8 more than Spurs… And we are supposed to be the ones with the iffy defence?!

  • 123spurs says:

we have a lot of competition for places now just to make the bench.

  • Niall D says:

I did say that Klopp made a couple of good signings. And a few people laughed at me on these pages.
We have seen how when these couple of signings aren’t on the field that Liverpool can be beaten.
Those signings being Beker and Van Dyk.
When Liverpool didn’t have those players. They were nowhere and again today with both of these player off the pitch, they were found wanting.
Not to say that they’re bad going forward, they are just a bit soft defensively without these two.
Much as we had a poor time without, Lloris, Kane, Sonny, Davies all injured last season.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Great effort from Soton to get a draw at the bridge, continuing your theme HT, Chelsea have conceded 9 in 5 games!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Shame the toons folded in the last 10 minutes, the 4-1 scoreline is extremely flattering to Manu.

  • Niall D says:

And guess what Man u got another Pen + quite a bit of Fergie time.
Even the Newkey fans are saying about the amount of pens they get.
Looks like you can’t go near a Man U player in the penalty box.
I’ll say something Mane would make a good Utd player he’s another one you darent go near but he’s on the ground rolling round. Disgraceful.

  • Niall D says:

    Just like Pauric
I must give some kuedos to Mr Levey and JM for what (on paper) looks like an excellent transfer window.
All our main shortfalls have been filled, we have at least 2 good players for each position.
He has brought in a great blend of youth and experience.
Ranging from early 20’s to 30’s.
The addition of these players has (for me) taken the staleness from the team and added much needed depth.
I think one more aqusition after Christmas, that elusive midfield play maker would do nicely.

LiVARpool complaining about VAR, remember the CL final

  • 123spurs says:

agree Naill, mane is a diving cheat, last season proved it for the penos.

  • Allan says:

Just a comment ref Olympic stadium

If we had been given the option of purchasing the stadium I believe that money would have been forthcoming from accross the Atlantic .

The Olympic stadium would have been pulled down and replaced with a stadium suitable for watching a football match at the same time attempting to include some sort of athletics facility .

I believe that the idea of us purchasing the stadium was vehemently opposed by Sebatian Coe and with his backers in parliament completely blocked our suggestion for redeveloping the site .

So yes good luck to the Hammers for getting that stadium but apart from the transport problems I think that we have done rather well with our new stadium !!

Hope with all the transfer hype and thrashing of United that we don’t as usual waste the opportunity of beating what has become a problem team for us and deflate the feel good factor around the club !!

  • Geofspurs says:

Allan …. However it played out we have ended up with a stadium that is the envy of the football world. Can’t be bad.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Allan……it seems to be in our DNA to pass up on opportunities presented by other results! :- )

Seriously though, apart from the United result (which flattered them greatly) all of the results so far this weekend have been pretty advantageous to our cause, it would be just like us to throw away the opportunity this provides and mess up against a spammers side that always seems to find extra motivation when they play us. I’m hoping that Jose will have addressed this in the training sessions leading to the game and encouraged a similar passion in our players. I’m hopeful that the prospect of Bale being on the bench at least will give the squad a lift.

  • Geofspurs says:

There is the possibility of going second if Villa draw with the Foxes …. or sinking down to obscurity for a while if we lose. Ain’t pressure grand! lol

  • Geofspurs says:

Two early goals would be nice so that I can relax and enjoy a stress-free romp. Too much to ask?

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Let’s hope so Geof, our opponents tend to be one of those teams whose heads drop once they go a couple of goals down, would be nice to be in that position fairly early in the game then introduce GB in the second half to smash in a couple as well! :- )

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. I like the way we think! lol
