Match Thread – Proper Football Returns So It’s Time For Spurs To Blow The Hammers Away

|

After another dull and boring international break as many of us ignored the serially uninspiring Gareth Southgate stick with his preferred 1-7-0-3 formation for England, the positives for Tottenham Hotspur were both rest and no further injuries that I noted.

With the Premier League return this weekend, Sunday sees us welcome the Appy Ammers to White Hart Lane and manager Jose Mourinho will be hoping to see his side build on our solid recent victories, particularly the 6-1 thumping of Manchester United.

On an injury front, there’s some hope and expectation we can get a first glimpse of the returning Gareth Bale. Giovani Lo Celso and Eric Dier should also come back into contention as well, but according to PhysioRoom.com Japhet Tanganga will again be missing.

Spurs’ own injury update in the next day or two should clear things up.

Despite West Ham having joy ahead of the break with victory over Leicester City, we need to keep our own momentum going and jumping ourselves to ten points would begin opening up that gap in the table, even if it’s still very early days in the campaign.

West Ham...

Win

Draw

Lose

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

so who is going to burst who’s bubble.

  • total knobhead says:

bubbles are for the NBA, not for English football, which is why I have doubts about whether the whole season will play out. The bubble will burst with positive COVID tests.

As to the coming match vs. the Ann Boleyns, they’ll be lucky to leave the pitch with their necks intact. No sense of history, that lot. I would like to thank them, however, for taking that horrible Olympic pitch off our hands. Not a place worthy of kicking a ball about. If not for that lot, we might be watching matches there. the horror, the horror.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I agree with you TK in so far as I wouldn’t want us to be playing there either but the porn kings got a good deal getting to play there for peanuts and no doubt will have got a tidy sum for the Boleyn ground for development.

Just glad to see the internationals over for one reason or another.
Looking forward to Sunday to see who is playing + the set up and tactics.
The Spammers are a bit of a bogey team for us, much like Stoke and Newcastle, they always seem to eek out a draw from nowhere. Hopefully we’ll put that to bed.
Hopefully Bale will be on show for a good 60 min or so. Can’t wait.
Geoff good last thread the only problem was that we all seemed to be much of the same opinion re Dele so no debate opened.
Danny thanks for the new thread.

  • Geofspurs says:

3 – 0! (Kane, Son, Bale). Wouldn’t that be nice?

  • jod says:

While the Hammers are something of a bogey team I actually think playing them now is a good thing. Jose is trying to turn us into tougher unit, its only in matches like this you find out how far he’s got. So this will be a good test, not so much of ability but mental strength and discipline which historically is where we have come up short.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Much of the spammers success comes when Antonio Valencia is allowed to play to the level he is capable of, Bowen has been in good form too as has Yarmalenko in his substitute performances, our defenders and defensive midfield will need to be on top of their game. I’ve a feeling Davinson will start to provide some pace against Valencia.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Would be surprised (pleasantly) to see GB start the match but every possibility he will play 20-30 minutes as a sub to ease him back in gently.

  • Niall D says:

    Antonio
Has historically been a good player for W/Ham, there was a time I would’ve liked him to play for us.
I think Jod has about nailed it, this will be an acid test and will be a good yardstick to measure our improvement.
I’ll also have 1/2 an eye on the Merseyside Derby to see if L/pool get their usual rub of the green.
Would like a win for the blue side, but don’t want em doin a Leicester and going on to win the league.
Back to us if we field the right 11 we sweep the Hammers aside.

  • PompeyYid says:

We are going to put the spam! where they belong, in a sandwich lol!

I am really looking forward to the 2nd coming of GB.

I also think GB will come on as a sub, midway into the 2nd half.

Oh yes I also thank them , Wham, as others have for taking the Council Ground. :-! COYS

Doesn’t seem to be much excitement about Sundays game!

Sounds like a deal sheet has been submitted for Rodon, apparently around £11m but possibly add-ons. It was interesting listening to Jose’s comments regarding the backing by the board in this transfer window.

  • Wentworth says:

Wow. What a window now we have Rodon. So looking forward to seeing Bale on Sunday. Just need Dele to get back to top form. We now have a top squad. Just missing that midfield general space left by Eriksen. Grealish was a miss but too late now. Now let’s put in a great attacking performance on Sunday. COYS.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

This match has Spursy written all over it. High optimism after the excellent transfer window and the six one win at Old Trafford. some fans and even some deluded pundits have suggested that Spurs could even win the league. They seem to be ignoring the fact that we can’t defend for toffees even conceding goals against pub teams in the Europa League. Jose hasn’t managed to sort that out. The big question for me is can we sort out the weak mentality in the squad. A good win against an in form West Ham team would go some way to answering that question.
Re Gareth Bale, we need to remember that he has barely played for a year and will need to be carefully managed. I don’t expect him to start on Sunday COYS

  • Geofspurs says:

DH …. I wasn’t thinking that we could win the league, but you’ve almost convinced me that we can. If we can’t defend for toffees, and only two other clubs (Villa and WHU) have conceded less than us, I daresay you’ve written off all the other clubs. So, it looks like we’re odds on to be champions. Add to this that no club has scored more goals than us …. and they may as well give us the trophy now. I don’t think it will be as easy as you suggest but thanks for cheering me up as I was starting to worry.

    • Pauric says:

I have been critical of Daniel Levy for not backing his manager in the past but credit where credit due he has provided our manager with some real quality I. E. Regullion, Hojdberg, I think Doherty is solid signing although I do firmly believe he’s more a wing back than a natural fullback, Bale signing is a 50/50 if he can stay fit he’s quality but if it doesn’t work out well both parties can walk away in the summer. The one big worry I have over Bale would be his work ethic without the ball, I never recalling him in the past been overly exuberant in getting back to defend.i would happily take Gareth to come of the bench this wknd and do what he done to West Ham the last time he played them that wonder goal at Upton Park. Regarding Vinicius,, Rodon havent seen them play before so let’s give them a chance to see what they can do. I still believe our central defenders are our weak link. It’s down to Mourinho to get this squad back up in contention for silverware nobody can guarantee winning titles or cups but been in contention would be a major positive. Nothing other than a resounding thumping of West ham should be excepted although Moyes will park the bus without doubt so I would except a 1-0 victory.

  • Niall D says:

DH you’re just a wee Ray of Sunshine.
We have as good a chance as any this season. There are no outright leaders in the prem at the moment.
We have a good squad. 2 of the goals scored against us were dodgy pens and not down to poor defending. We have the best goal scoring record.
I’m upbeat this season for us winning something and finishing well up in the league.
Aim for the stars you may just hit the ceiling.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Pauric….I don’t think there is any doubt the Spammers will play a counter attacking game using the power and pace of Valencia, Bowen, and probably Yarmalenko as a sub later in the game. We will have to be careful not to be caught playing too high a back line, I think it’s likely we will see a CB partnership of Toby and Davinson who will probably start even if Dier is fit because he is likely to deal better with the pace and power of Valencia.

I’ve no doubt they will get themselves up for this game as they are inclined to do, especially the likes of Noble who usually has his best game of the season against us. I don’t think he has been a regular starter so far this season so that could be to our advantage! :- )

  • Geofspurs says:

Hope HT, BS, and EJ are okay.

    • Hot Tottingham says:

      Hi Geof!

BS is busy with his wee one, teaching the ABC… He’s stuck on L for Levy!
EJ is waiting (not so) patiently for the January TW!
Me? I’m sat at home dreaming of a Brave New Spurs!

  • PompeyYid says:

Donny, there you go again, realism in your book lol! let us dream just for once!

I believe things are starting to look good, we will win tomorrow, whether its only 1-0 we will win. COYS

  • Hott Tottingham says:

I’ve not watched the Irons this season. But I see that Moyes has been setting up very defensively in all their matches, home and away. With a 5-4-1 formation (?)… And yet, they still get to have a lot of efforts on goal, even after conceding the lions share of possession.

So, I’ll be looking for Sanchez and Toby/Dier to be lobbing a lot of long balls up to Son, Harry, Lucas and possibly Bale. In hope more than anything. But, I suggest that we cut out – not just the middle men – but our attackers too! With Toby or Dier and Davinson to lob it just that little bit longer and, straight into the back ‘o’ the net! That’ll confound Moyes and his Wham boys, for sure!

    Only Joshing!

We’ll kill em stone dead with some outrageously good n speedy, attacking and exciting, front foot football, that’ll put them in a dizzy Miss Lizzy (where am I, boss ) spin!

    Spurs 5-0 Bubble Blowers!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I just submitted a post that is yet to appear. I predicted a 5-0 win to Spurs. But…
    6-0 will do!
