Match Thread – Mourinho’s Been Sent On His Jose As Greedy Spurs Again Misjudge The Mood

|

Well, it’s turned into a semi-interesting week for fans of Tottenham Hotspur – but not in a way many of us would’ve liked it to be.

Following Sunday’s late breaking European Super League nonsense, on Monday morning Spurs took an unexpected step and decided to sack manager Jose Mourinho. Now maybe I’m too cynical for my own good, but this smacks of changing the narrative and trying to drive headlines as nobody can be in any doubt about how badly the ESL has been received, not just at club level, but across the wider footballing world.

European Super League

Love It

Disgraceful Move

There is absolutely only one driver to this – greed and money – and having previously misjudged the mood when it came to Covid and furlough, Daniel Levy, the board and our owner have again monumentally misjudged fans in their chase for what I can only see as a criminal and cartel like ‘closed shop’ competition that gives all those involved a clear unfair advantage over fellow domestic sides – which in turn, ruins the credibility of that leagues competitive nature.

Not a merit based advantage that we currently have, but an advantage wholly gained by a handout for involvement and nothing more.

Fans are hoping to return to a more normal life after Covid, and Spurs pull this stunt now and to me, simply sack Mourinho as a public relations move to deflect attention. It’s contemptible and disgusting behaviour in no way demonstrating what our club should stand for.

We play Southampton this Wednesday evening, I’m not so sure how much I care now.

Southampton

Win

Draw

Lose

Who Cares

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

If it took the Super League to get Mourinho the sack, then at least that one good came of it. Beyond that, the pernicious influence of men like Rupert Murdoch rolls on and on. Football works for cable television operators first and foremost and his since that git entered the game.

Our beloved club sport has been despoiled for some time with dirty money. Our stadium was designed so as to attract the NFL teams that exist to accomplish mainly two things: make gobs of money for old rich white men and to cause brain damage to players who tend not to be be white men. They call it football but the ball rarely touches a foot. What’s it doing in our stadium?

Sad state of affairs. Super League my ass. I assume it will come with a Super Bowl to go to the winner, instead of a cup of some kind. Cups are too small to be Super. Super wants a bowl. The main thing that’s super here is the greed driving it. Are we going to have to wait an hour between halves so that some giant Hollywood style show is put on between the two 45 minute periods?

This surely does not have the feel of a VS thread. It’s mostly about bankers and finances and other sham enterprises.

  • Pauric Carolan says:

Well I’m not surprised fat Joe Lewis and Daniel Levy are front and centre off this power grab and pure greed. These owners don’t give two fiddlers f***s about fans. Please don’t tell me levy’s a fan because a true fan would never want this happening.Lewis and Levy are two greedy pigs.

  • TK says:

Can we trust a man who hired Mourinho just 17 months ago to be making such momentous decisions about the future of our club? The rest of the world knew hiring Mourinho was insane. It was not a choice for this century.

  • TK says:

Greedy piggies are supposed to come in threes, no? they just sacked one greedy piggy. So now there are two. Two little, two little, two little piggies… and one was sent away hey.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Pauric….it’s as I said on the previous thread, the club have to go with it for fear of missing out if it succeeds, the chances are it won’t even get off the ground.

  • TK says:

For an individual club it’s a difficult situation. THFC could cement themselves in the elite echelon or fall by the wayside. But the entire enterprise stinks. but what club wants to be locked outside the stink? We should rue the day that Rupert Murdoch commercialized the game on his cable system.

  • Niall D says:

TQ re this “Stuper league” I feel (and I hope) agree that Spurs have been dragged into it rather than being architects or main players. I sincerely hope it is just a rouse or bargaining chip for more dividend from Euro games(as iif they need it). However if it comes to pass, we’ll see Spurs v Barcelona played in Dubai, Man U v Inter Milan in California.
It will actually be the end of the domestic game, ManU almost destroyed the worth of the the FA Cup by choosing to play the club World Cup in South America, it took around 5 years for the FA Cup to return to its full standing.
But who can judge the extreme greed of these Businesses who’d apparently sell their granny to make a buck.
    Re the team for midweek
    Lloris,
Doherty, Tobs, Dave (Dier) Regs, Hoj, NDomb, Dele, Bale, Sonny, Kane.
I predict Negelesman (spelling) as our next coach.
Good bye JM good luck won’t write about you again.
BTW if this super thingy goes on I’m cancelling my subscriptions BT and Sky.
I think they re part of the problem

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Niall…….it’s far from a given that Sky or BT will have broadcast rights for an ESL, with such a large US involvement it’s very likely to be Amazon or Disney+ who outbid everyone else for the worldwide rights.

  • Geofspurs says:

According to the BBC all 12 clubs knew exactly what the extent of the initial fallout would be from all levels of the football world, and were prepared for it.

Huge changes have occurred in many sports over the years and, every time, things settled down and life continued. People generally need time to adjust.

I read that the younger generation are more accepting of the proposal. That makes sense. Older fans have a history with the game they were brought up with and are less likely to embrace such a massive re-direction of it.

The question is …. If the English clubs that are part of the ESL proposal are allowed to continue in the PL, can Spurs afford NOT to be part of it? But there is obviously no answer to this at this time.

My major dislike of this proposal is the fact that the founding club members can never be relegated. This goes against the grain of every sporting competition in history and makes no sense to me. It is completely prejudicial.

The model for this idea of a league without relegation is American professional sports leagues–baseball, basketball, ice hockey, soccer. There’s never been the idea of relegation or divisions. The rotten teams remains and stay rotten, for the most part, for without relegation there’s less motivation to improve. There are perennial bottom dwellers who are content to stay there, for they’ll stay in the league forever, and the big teams draw crowds when they come to play. The scam is even greater. A permanent team in the league is free to fold its tents and move to another city and can use this to bribe cities to build them new stadiums or they’ll leave. The Los Angeles Dodgers used to play in Brooklyn, NY. The Los Angeles Lakers were in Minnesota where they have lakes, but Los Angeles with the Lakers has not Lakes. The old Baltimore Colts move to Indianapolis. The Saint Louis Cardinals were in Chicago but moved to Arizona now. The Atlanta Braves started in Boston then moved to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta. I could go on and on about these moves. I can imagine THFC playing in Yugoslavia in a few years if Yugoslavia happens to come back into being. Maybe Modric’s nephews will play for us there.

    To Danny.

Hi Danny. Why is this thread being called a ‘Match Thread’? You have just made it into an anti-Super League rant. The SL is one thing and JM ‘s sacking is another. The match is another!

Surely you should have addressed these 3 issues in 3 separate threads?

    • Geofspurs says:

Hey HT …. I was about to make the same comment. Three threads would allow everyone to focus on the main issue for them.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’m actually looking forward to tonights match, after not bothering to watch the Everton match.

Of course we don’t really know what to expect from it. Will the players play with a new found freedom and bring back a little more sense of joy to the game? Or is the season set to continue on as we have seen, and give us supporters yet more reasons to be frustrated and disappointed?

How ever it pans out, it will be interesting to see who starts the game tonight and what tactics we will see and what formation is employed, etc… Things that I’d stopped caring about. And that is sad!

Go ahead Spurs, make me happy again… Please!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    * The game of course is tomorrow night, not tonight!

  • OyvehMaria says:

Well lets sharpen the ol’ pen and deal with each topic on their individula merits. First of all a big … I told you so…. . I wrote articles as deputy editor on VS for 10 years. I used to get slagged off about my views on Levy and Joe Lewis. Wave after wave of how I am wrong about Levy and ENIC! Well here we are … their true colours have now been finally shown to all of us! Dont let Spurs lose or win on their own merits lets make sure we can put the club inside a club and pull up the drawbridge and let the fans watch the same European Competition season after season knowing full well that it doesnt matter if Bayern Munich stuff us 7-1 we can always try again next season cos we cant be relegated!! It wont matter if we finish in mid-table mediocrity every season cos we know we’ll always be in Europe… ! What about the palyers ? …..Will Harry Kane accept not being chosen to play for his country?

Let’s deal with the market this ESL is aimed at … the Far East … the engine room for gambling, the market where people will pay good money for their subscription to watch the top European clubs play each other year in year out! and where betting companies will pay big bucks to sponsor TV adverts, advertising hoardings etc etc. Why else would JP Morgan want to invest $4.6bn. They are not mugs they know the return they can get for sponsoring the ESL. These ESL games will be hyped American NFL Style, the advertising spaces during the televised matches will be long and frequent, the subscription fee will be on top of your Sky subscription, your season ticket wont have any influence on ESL Games you’ll still have to buy a ticket at an inflated price to see an ESL game.

Lets deal with Jose…..Ryan Mason will be the 13th Manager Levy has employed since ENIC took over in 2001. 13 in 20 years!!!! … has it worked ? One League Cup in 20 years ?……. the stats speak for themselves. Jose was appointed because of his reputation. Apart from Porto Jose had a budget at his other clubs that Spurs could only dream of. So Jose arrives at Spurs where our most expensive player is £42m ! But Jose cant go to Daniel and ask for a £78m defender like Liverpool did, no, but Jose still gets players that Daniel didnt allow Poch to have. There was a reason why Poch was our Manager for 5 years; He respected his players, he never slagged them off in public …… he didnt chop and change the team every game, in fact Poch was crticised for always picking the same team from a pool of 15 players, …. Poch didnt have an ego … he didnt sulk and take a defeat personally …(“Same coach different team”) in other words … Poch wasn’t a toxic charachter …! 17 months on and Levy has once again put Spurs on the manager merry go round….. well done Daniel, well done Joe, I hope your both proud of yourselves …… enjoy reading the headlines this morning …… you’ve just made Spurs a commodity first and a football club second!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

With respect Oyveh. You are not proven to be correct about such things. It all still remains your own personal opinions. But, they are not mine.

Why don’t you submit an article about the subject?

By the way, that “most expensive” (Spurs) player you mentioned is Ndombele. It was apparently for £56m. And that is a huge sum for any club to have paid for him… And he was bought for Pochettino, before JM arrived.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

You say Cordon sums it up… But his explanation to his American audience, of how organised football started out in England, is completely wrong.

Before Association Football came into being in the late 1800’s, organised football was mostly played (with non-standardised rules) at Public schools such as Eton and Harrow. And then, Old Etonians were one of the earliest known Association clubs, as were Cambridge University FC. It was not as Cordon put it, born from just local “working class” clubs. It was right across the social board. (And those two clubs still exist to this day).

Not to mention the various versions of ‘football that ere played the world over for many centuries before…

So, football as we know it, has never really been football as so many previous generations have known it….. Times change and football changes with the times too…..

And in England and Scotland for example, the football that was played all over on the streets of towns and cities and no doubt farmland 700 years orand more ago, and then made illegal. Probably had many of its supporters and players up in. arms about it, whilst complaining that the ruling classes had taken it away from them, as they then knew and loved it to be…. Blah Blah!

And if the ESL ever does come in to being and lasts well into this century or beyond, thre will be new generations of followers that will not know any different… And then it’ll turn into something new to piss them off…….

I don’t know if I approve of the ESL or not… But, it may never happen. anyway…

  • TQ2Spurs says:

The situation is not dissimilar to the one in Darts some years back, the game was being run by a dinosaur organisation (BDO) which was being run for the benefit of a few with nepotism apparently rife. It needed a number of top players to break away and set up an alternative organisation (PDC) as a means of making the game more appealing to a larger audience and better reward the players rather than line the pockets of the closed shop managing organisation.

The game has progressed no end since this happened, the PDC has taken the game worlwide while the dinosaur BDO has seen it’s own audience dwindle to nothing as a result of their lack of ambition to drag their organisation into the 21st century and address a modern market.

This sounds as though I might be making an argument for the ESL, I’m not (well certainly not in it’s current format) but I do believe there needs to be pressure on UEFA and FIFA to reform their organisations to carve out corruption and act more in the interest of clubs rather than their own board members.

  • BelgianSpur says:

I think Gary Neville made a great point yesterday about the timing of Jose’s sacking.

First of all, it serves as a great way to change the subject of the club’s involvement in the ESL. Second, and more importantly, if Levy had already his mind set on moving from Jose after the season, but Jose actually went out and won a trophy, that conversation became a lot more difficult all of the sudden.

Solution: remove that opportunity for JM altogether.

I understand the logic, but it still feels as though we are shooting ourselves in the foot. Sacking a manager 6 days before a final is going to be a distraction, no matter how we look at it.

Not that DL actually cares if this club wins anything, but I digress…
