Match Thread – Conte Hoping To Come Out On Klopp As Spurs Head To Liverpool

|

After two bitterly disappointing results as we excited April, Tottenham Hotspur got themselves back in the groove with a good victory over Leicester City last weekend – but this coming Saturday we face a massive test against Jurgen Klopp’s in form Liverpool side.

Having conceded our small advantage in the battle for fourth place and an automatic Champions League spot, Saturday evening’s result could have a massive bearing on whether we will now jump ahead of our north London rivals or be left with major disappointment given the handful of game that now remain in the 2021/22 campaign.

Our upcoming encounter with them in the next midweek round of fixtures could still prove to be absolutely pivotal in deciding the final make up of the table.

Injury wise as our preparations continue, it’s pretty much a case of where we were with Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon likely out for this one and few would be expecting any good news there when the official injury update arrives in a few days.

A draw here wouldn’t be too bad a result at all.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

I would like to be optimistic ref the Liverpool match but feel that we will be found out by a well drilled and effective side .
Our defence will be under great pressure which doesn’t bode well with Emerson ready to be embarrassed . Our passing and ball control is poor when put under pressure from an effective press and we often resort to long balls to the opposition to attempt to get out of the press . I am totally pessimistic but will be watching and hoping .
It is interesting to note that vs Villareal Klopp was able to bring on Henderson in the 2nd half . Who do we have to bring on ? Winks !!
I would love to be proved wrong but ………

  • Niall D says:

Whilst I can see points on what has been said.
Just like many on here, I am an optimist.
Do we have “a punchers chance” yep.
But in some ways, I think we have more.
    Here’s my argument
1 Liverpool have just qualified for CL final and currently think they are “the dogs doodahs”
2 They are under more pressure to win the league than we are to be 4th
    3. They could have a hang over or injuries or niggles from Tuesday, and have had little preparation.
I will argue that those who are, writing us off currently, appear to be the same, as those who wrote us off against Man C this season.
4.They don’t set up to defend, which suits our style.
Are we likely to win, then no
    Can we win then yes.
As I said we have, more than a punchers chance, a hand ball at a corner, a worldie, a defensive slip up, they are due a loss and are just a bit arrogant, need their wings clipped.
As I quoted earlier, we are in a race we shouldn’t really be in, we’re in the sprint home with nothing to lose. 😉
If we lose, we’ll we sorta expected it, but if we win and Arse lose then….
    COYS.
    We’re rested, prepared

  • block 108 spurs says:

Now we will see how spurs players have the desire and effort to follow up their performances of wining sequence. A loss v liverpool will be fatal to our CL chances, so a spursy game is never far from the surface of their psyche. Conte will do his best to get them ready… but on the pitch its 90% players and 10% manager tactical plans….perhaps we could add extra 2.5% for conte as he is touchline motivated each game we play…So efforts need will be 112% to win at Anfield. COYS

ps.. my £50 will stay in my pocket 🙂

  • Geofspurs says:

Let’s not get too excited lads …. losing away to Liverpool, especially this season, would not warrant a barrage of negative comments. But winning would warrant a barrage of praise.

  • Niall D says:

    Morning Geoff 100% m8.
    My thoughts, exactly.

  • jod says:

Niall D – This is exactly the sort of crap I get so fed up of. Someone lists a set of names and lists some numbers against them. Then everyone pretends its real. Who exactly is going to buy these players at these prices ? not a clue right ? That’s the great advantage of “lets pretend”. Lo Celsco might well attract interest in Spain, but most Spanish clubs are poor compared to the premier league so £30m ? unlikely. Dutch clubs are even poorer, the only way we will get £25m for Berwgijn is if Ten Hag wants him at United. What kind of idiot would pay £30m for N’Dombele ? Who would pay £20m for Winks or £25m for Emerson for that matter ? The £6m for Carter-Vickers is solid but is really just petty cash. I should point out we are already committed to spending £65m to complete the transfers of Romero and Kulusevski. I realise its much easier to just make stuff up but you can only spend real money.

    • PompeyYid says:

Jesus Jod get off your lofty high horse seat! the figures people give are only ITK for gods sake, jesting etc.

Romero has signed, Kulu will, thus that’s a chunk of our TW monies gone already, me! am expecting about £40 to £60m in allowance for this STW, maybe a little bit more with sales, house clearance totals. COYS

      • Ekkaboy says:

Well, maybe I am the super optimist but I will be having my $100 ( 50 quid) on Spurs to beat Pool at 6-1. This is the last chance to get these odds on Spurs. If they lose I will give up drinking my 2 bottles of red for the next 2 weeks. (Margaret River reds of course!). Be positive. Have faith. 6-1! Good value.

  • Allan says:

Yes I am negative but am hopeful that we can get something .
I have only pointed out the playing problems we have and against Liverpool we will be tested . If Liverpool allow us to play without closing down then we can beat many sides .
Leicester could have been one up before Kane scored . We were lucky not to lose to Brentford and Brighton well .
Certtainly we are not the side who went down 3 0 to Man U and Chelsea but we are in a building process and fans have every right to praise and or criticise while attempting to be objective .

  • Niall D says:

    Ahhh Jod
    You never fail to disappoint.
Truth is, we don’t know just how much people are prepared to spend.
My point is that, given the fact you, me and many others had written the likes of CCV and Lo Ceslo and a few others off, in another league they actually shine, and will have an intrinsic value, what ever that may be, again the likes of Winks at Everton, Brighton or Southampton at 18/20 mil, out of the question? I don’t think so.
Indeed we do “owe dosh” for Kulu and Romero, but we are back in a position where we as a club are generating money, the “stadium” is starting to do what it was built to do.
Mind you, you were the guy who wrote off Kulu and Bente ur after 20 mins in their first game and indeed You had written off our chances of a top 4 finish around the same time.
BTW you left Clarke, Rodon, Sanches, maybe Lucas+ maybe monies from Dele, will Gil and Pepe Sarr be sold?
In short just like you, I don’t know, who will be sold, who will stay, and vitally how much we will get for each player.
Mind you, you want us to finish either 4th or 10th.
Now that’s the sort of crap I get fed up with.

  • jod says:

Niall D – “Truth is, we don’t know just how much people are prepared to spend.” Didn’t you just cite a list of what we were going to get for these players ? If it was just made up why pretend its genuine ?

  • Love totty says:

Of course we have a chance. But we have to turn up and scrap for possession. Hopefully Conte will have a plan to stop the crosses they are so good at cos that’s our Achilles heel. Go toe to toe and with a few lucky breaks we can certainly score, so keeping them at bay is what’s required. A draw would indeed be a great result but maybe even that will not be enough. However as last night demonstrated, it’s not over until it’s over.

  • Niall D says:

Jod not my list or prices
However they do come from a (bona-fide) Spurs reporter, who may have some ITK that we don’t.
So it wasn’t what people, would pay, but perspective value of players.
And if you read the report, then you know I didn’t make it up.
And that’s what it’s, all about, perspectives, Chelsea paid 97 mil for Lukaku, is he worth that currently, that would be a no, but Chelsea could still value him at 97 mil.
So in short it’s value rather than purchase price.
You were and are always asking, where the money comes from.
That was an answer, a list of perspective sales of players, with possible market value, not for all of the money we need to improve our squad but as usual, you pooh pooh any answer which doesn’t suit you very narrow narrative.
It’s easy to sit and criticise, other people’s post, without actually offering any solutions yourself, but that’s your narrow minded game.
So I’ll tell you what, you tell the rest of us where the money’s coming from.
But you won’t you haven’t the balls to put your head above the parapet and actually come up with any suggestions , you’d rather sit and snipe at others.
I know you’ll whinge, it’s not my job to come up with any suggestions.
We’ll if you can’t, then you have very little rite to criticise others.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Niall a good post there…Jod we await your response. ?

  • Geofspurs says:

Since the first football league was formed supporters have speculated, discussed, and argued, about what each team needs to do to make it better. These discussions take the shape of what positions need to be improved and the type of player that is needed to improve them.

Other discussions continue about who would be the most appropriate manager and what strategies the teams need to adopt to be more successful. It’s what we do. These discussions are part of the fun of following a club.

These discussions are all speculative, based on each supporter’s opinion and, usually, emotional. These discussions do not have to be based in reality, which would take much of the joy out of being a supporter, but based on what each supporter would like to see happen. And no supporter should be held accountable for their opinion.

These discussions are purely subjective as each supporter puts his, or her, opinion ‘out there’. And, although all of the opinions are quite pointless in the great scheme of things (and we all know that), they are a vital part of being a supporter and add greatly to the enjoyment of the game.

None of the above relies on specifics. Who to buy, how much they cost, and where would the money come from, are questions that do not require definitive answers when supporters discuss their team. They are questions that will be asked, and answered, by the clubs, players, and power-brokers of the game.

What supporters would like to see for their clubs and how that may or may not happen are separate discussions.

Weird, isn’t it, but …. gotta love football!

  • Niall D says:

    B108 cheers chum.
However I don’t really want to get into an argy bargy around, speculation from a reporter.
I was just pointing out that there were people other than us posters saying much the same thing around the same players.
Who perhaps had a bit more knowledge than the likes of me with reference to player valuations.
I thought it was common sense that player much like property valuations, can be wide of the mark either way, but you have to have a start point, and that’s, what I was trying to get across.
    Geoff very good last post.

  • wentworth says:

If we had two decent wing backs today, we would be in with a great chance. As it is, we are hampered by the sadly lacking Sessegnon and Emerson. Just think if Son and Kane had decent service from the flanks and a creative, top passing midfielder, we would be unstoppable.
As it is, it’s a miracle that we are fighting for the fourth spot.
Conte is demanding some top recruits in the summer. If Levy doesn’t deliver, he will be gone.
We have to offload all the bench warmers who have had their time and those that left in January. Get those academy players up to scratch. What is the point otherwise?
Onwards and upwards. Audere est facere.
    Onwards and upwards

  • Niall D says:

    Hi WW
I just wonder would there be any milage, particularly in the RB position, to use both Lucas and Kulu as starters down that side.
Even stick Both Bergs and Sonny down the other side.
But currently, I’d agree it’s where we are at our weakest.
With that said we can, and will win tonite.
    COYS.

    • wentworth says:

Interesting thought Niall. Maybe Lucas and Kulu not sure about Berg’s. He fancies himself but is very limited imho. He needs to go and show off somewhere else. I hav always liked the young lad Paskotsi. As you know, I’m always hoping we will have some young stars to create some competition
Our bench is pretty uninspiring to day the least.

  • block 108 spurs says:

It seems Tanganga as been forgotten.. He can play rb / lb remember he played at LB and kept m.salah in his pocket last season v pool at whl… we also have sanchez as r side defender / wing back..

    • Love totty says:

In some ways I miss the Argy Bargy of past years on this site. Big C would say something racist and everyone would pile in. And there were plenty of posters then with things to say. Remember Coopsieyid and his sycophants or that guy who used every topic to rail against ENIC. Or Peterbalb from Canada who used 1000 words when 10 would do. The AVB lovers, the AVB haters, ManOn where are you now? Those were the days when you could submit articles to stir up a controversy and then sit back to watch the sparks fly. All pretty tame now unless someone disagrees? Ha ha.

  • PompeyYid says:

Regards the monies we spend or do not! this TW, yes everything being spouted is ITK, truth or complete bullcrap! who knows who cares, we have to wait and see, simple as that.

I did read this morning that we have a transfer debt of approximately £179m, pick the bones out of that, then do not forget the losses caused by Covid, how does it adds up? how is it going to affect our buys this summer? in my opinion its anyone’s guess, cos that is all it is.

It could after all be that to buy we are going to have to sell! COYS

  • 123spurs says:

Top4 will get us a nice tidy income for starters.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

I want Graham Potter as our manager.

    • wentworth says:

Brilliant football from Brighton. Should have been 5. We could do with Cucurella, Bissouma and even sub Lamptey.
