Match Thread – Can Spurs Ranieri Watford & Get Back To Winning Ways

|

With Tottenham Hotspur’s clash against Southampton on Tuesday afternoon ultimately ending in disappointment as we only took a point despite our better control of the game, it’s all eyes to this Saturday’s game away to Watford.

As I type, our visit to Vicarage Road will continue to go ahead as planned despite other matches continuing to fall foul of Coronavirus outbreaks at clubs, but again, until the tests come back on Saturday morning, who manager Antonio Conte has available to select is pretty much an unknown.

We already know Giovani Lo Celso, Steven Bergwijn, Ryan Sessegnon and Cristian Romero will again be missing with their injuries, but we’ll have to wait until the official injury update to find out if anyone has joined them since the weekend.

As for Watford, they apparently have nine out themselves, so it means no reunion with former player Danny Rose who is now on their books.

Form, table position and almost everything else you can think of should suggest a solid three points for us here, but life is rarely that simple.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

Thanks Danny for the final thread of this year.

Looking forward to next years already.

Have a Happy n Prosperous New Year mate.

Eagle’s wing’s to be clipped, a good win for the mighty Cockerels coming up. COYS

Looking forward to the transfer window ( with trepidation). Can we lose a few and gain some quality in midfield and attack?
Or will Levy wait for the 11th hour and delve into the bargain bin?
    Lose 5 and gain three.
Will 2022 discover some young stars amongst our ranks?

  • Geofspurs says:

I thought we were unlucky against the Saints. How was Kane given offside? That was a rhetorical question, by the way.

Anyway I’m pretty confident of a 0-3 win in this one. And I’m rarely wrong. Okay, so my definition of ‘rarely’ is not the same as most people’s.

I haven’t got used to writing 2021 yet and in a couple of days I’ll have to remember it’s 2022. Life can be so phuking hard!

    Happy New Year, lads.

  • Niall D says:

Happy new year to you all, Danny thanks for the thread and all the work this year.
I’m actually a bit more annoyed around the, S’oton result and the ref decisions, I just hope, like the W/Ham result last year it doesn’t cost us,at the pointy end.
Plus the fact that had the goal been allowed it may have helped Kanes’ confidence a bit.
Like many looking forward to the TW more in hope than expectation.
Just hope Levey doesn’t revert to type.
On a positive side we’re better off points wise than this time last year, 😃.

  • Allan says:

Good New Year to all esp Danny for his great work .
I am not going to be optimistic for this one but will still be watching .
Interesting how Winks has improved and apparently is now an important player .!! I have never doubted his attitude but his ability ?
Amazing how an experienced and positive coach can alter and improve a players performance especially when fans are screaming for his transfer .
Are Ndombele and Alli past their useful best ?

  • 123spurs says:

Winks is still not good enough and never will be id rather have JWP all day long. Must win game simple as.

  • Allan says:

    Who is JWP please ?
    Sorry for ignorance

  • Niall D says:

I’m with you there 123 for me Winksy just isn’t creative enough, he has improved in his last outings but for me been nothing more than decent. Lots of huffing and puffing from side to side with little real endeavour, he did have a couple of decent passes the other night but has done little to convince me that he’s just really a squad player.

  • Allan says:

However Conte rates Winks having said so publicly and obviously sees something in him which the fans have missed
Unfortunately his playing history has been patchy to say the least and it will take several more improved performances , like the last two , to make me convinced.
However give the bloke another chance and you never know .

  • jod says:

Conte wants players who will do a complete job. Hence even though N’Dombele may have more in his locker than Winks in terms of creativity it won’t do him any good if he switches off when we are defending. What impresses me about Conte is he seems to be getting Winks back to something like the player he was when he first came into the Spurs and England side. He’s unlikely to move ahead of Skipp and Hojbjerg in the pecking order but given the number of games we have to play he could get a decent amount of playing time. With Conte it seems to be about what he thinks he can make of a player, his comments on Dier weren’t about what he is but what he could become.

    • PompeyYid says:

Jod good roundup of Winks there, I am in the same boat regards him.

Now to all my fellow Yids and Vital family…..

Here’s wishing you all a VERY HOTSPUR/HAPPY and PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. COYS COYS COYS.

  • Niall D says:

    Jod /PY
I do hope you’re both right re Winks, perhaps for me there was so much early expectation, and whether it was “schooled” into him by Mourinho he became much too safe in his play, industrious but with little product.
With that said he has improved in the last couple of games and may be one of those who lost a bit of confidence in the last season.
I just feel that both Hoj and Skippy are ahead of him for that midfield position and so far I have only seen decent to good in Wink’s performances, sadly nothing brilliant.
And when others point to Ward Prowse who virtually ran things for Southampton in a similar position and Tielemans for Leicester who has had a pretty good season, for me that’s, where Winks needs to be week in and out but sadly isn’t.
Mind you he’s not alone there are others in the squad who still need to step up.
To you all happy new year but particularly Geoff who actually is now in 2022.🎉🎊😀

  • wentworth says:

These are the players that might be up for sale in Jan window….Doherty, Dele, Clarke, Lo Celso, N’Dombele, Bergweijn, Winks and Gil.
Would we miss any of them?
    Could we do better?
Will we make some decent signings?
Will January be a happy new year?
Conte needs support. Will Levy support him or faff about penny pinching?

  • TK says:

Here’s to a successful 2022, full of intelligent, flowing, Spurs winning football!

  • Niall D says:

Couldn’t agree more TK happy new year m8. 🎉😉😀

  • Allan says:

Just throw a name into the mix . Max Aarons ?
At one time wasn’t he linked heavily to us ? Replacement for Doherty if Aarons can be used as a wing back ? Thoughts anyone ?

  • jod says:

Niall D – I think you have to go back further than Mourinho with Winks. It seems to me that both Pochettino and Southgate tried to turn him into a defensive midfield player, but he never was another Skipp. Conte seems to be getting him to play his natural game which generally gets a player playing better.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi folks
Trust you all had a good new year.
Allan, both EJ and I suggested Aarons or Castagne before we signed Doherty, but I agree he could be a decent signing, until he puts a Spurs shirt on, then he won’t be able to kick his own ar$e😉.
Jod I hope you’re right re Winks, I just don’t see the massive change needed to make him much more than a squad player, there are currently much better players out there for that position.
I just hope the usual Spursy go round hasn’t started, having been linked with Kessie, it now looks unlikely at this time, I suppose he’s about 1/2 a mil too much for Mr Levey and there’s an 18 year old at Bolton (or somewhere) just as good for 2 mil less 🙄.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Happy New Year to all spurs fans and VS posters (DW inc.)

IMO winks has been directed to be a holding mf and not amf by recent managers, he is able to do both in a game if he has support from players to cover him and confidence regained, a couple of goals will do that for him. Conte likes various shapes of 3, 4 or 5 in mf so winks can do the above movement.

Todays game should see spurs win 2-0 or 3-0 (geof again..lol) sisoko will be fired up for this game so expect a yellow card f or him, if playing. COYS

  • jod says:

Niall D – “there are currently much better players out there for that position”, the usual men with no names you get on this site or real players that are both available and affordable ?

  • Geofspurs says:

I’m watching Arsenal v City. It’s 1-0 at HT and Arsenal have been devastating in the first half. Hope City can find something in the second half!
We need them to drop points before we collect our three points in a couple of hours. Not too much to ask, is it? COYS!
