Match Thread – Can Spurs Go Out With A Bang & A CL Spot

|

It’s been a season of ups and downs for Tottenham Hotspur and having seemingly blown a great chance to secure a top four spot the other month, the stars have aligned perfectly for Antonio Conte and we again hold a two point advantage over Arsenal in the race for fourth place.

With Spurs ending the campaign strongly with three wins and two draws in our last five, our north London neighbours handed us the advantage on Monday evening as they fell to a very poor 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers and as had long been speculated, our recent meeting has been absolutely key to the final lay of the top flight table.

It’s now all eyes to Sunday afternoon and the final day of action for the 2021/22 campaign and with Mikel Arteta’s side face Everton, we have the much easier task of a trip to Carrow Road to face Dean Smith’s already relegated Norwich City side.

Injury wise, the only player to potentially welcome back is Cristian Romero following the hip issue he sustained in the Liverpool clash, but you wouldn’t expect anyone else to return now.

Over to the players to finish a largely mixed campaign on a massive high.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Its our last chance to keep the Puskas at the Lane for another season!!! COYS.

    Wolves ?

  • Allan says:

Thanks Danny for your pre match thoughts this season .
Let’s hope that stomach bug gate is sorted before Sunday .
A see saw season and if we can get 4th what an achievement .
Conte appears to be able to get the best from the team with some individuals ( Emerson / Doherty ) surprising me .
I hope Norwich will try and make a game of it and not shut up shop since they have nothing to lose .

  • jod says:

In the end all that matters is getting that fourth spot. All the problems of the season will be forgotten and with the extra revenue and prestige of champions league football recruitment will be much easier. The chances of Conte staying will also be much higher. The shape of the team is now set, although plenty on this site seem to want to change he formation it won’t happen under Conte. We also seem to have recruited much better this year. We actually have a decent squad which we are looking to add to rather than fill gaping holes. So in the summer another left sided centre half for sure, maybe look at the all important wing back positions. Naturally we’ll look for that mythical back up centre forward we’ve been trying to find since Kane first burst into the team. No doubt people on this site will be baffled when other clubs show no interest in buying our dead wood and we find ourselves paying wages to players we can’t get rid off. Hopefully we will start the new season with a deeper squad and the players moulded more firmly into the team Conte wants.

Of course given the season we’ve seen and the way United, Arsenal and ourselves have repeatedly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory I won’t relax until the Norwich game is done.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Jod – You say we need a centre half, wing backs and another striker but you fail to name names, you fail to say where the money is coming from. So annoying.

  • jod says:

DoncasterHotspur – I said what we would probably be looking for, in terms of a centre forward I actually used the word mythical, maybe if you learned to read ?

Thank you Danny for the final game thread of this season, you have done a wonderful job.

Norwich on Sunday, hit em hard get the win, nevermind anyone else, simples!

5 subs rule in next season, so deeper squad required, esp as we are again in 4 comps

With the 5 subs more players can be kept interested, we need additions that are in the same mold as Kulu and Bents.

I will never name players, as I haven’t a clue what Conte thinks, if he stay’s of course, where the dosh is coming from? again! I haven’t a clue, but sell to buy, loans to buy etc come into the equation.

LoCelso will be gone 100% I think + a number of others, who? I do not know!

Sarr with be joining us, but will we loan him out again?

N’Dombele will be back! what will happen there?

Interesting Summer coming up, all depending on us finishing 4th n CL, or 5th n EL.

Finally, how is this for a dream? Chavs lose their last 2 games and we win at Norwich, think on lol! COYS

    Morning folks
Danny thanks yet again for another thread.
DH, don’t you realise that Jod doesn’t apply his very precise limitations to himself, he reserves his narrow minded caustic comments for the rest of us.
BTW, he did state back in February when we signed our two players, he called them “re-enforcemennts and would not make us a better team..
He did however say he would be happy to be proven wrong, well he was wrong, so I hope he’s happy.
He did say he would review both of our comments and see who is right.
    My only reason for posting
And whilst I’m in gloating modeπŸ˜œπŸ˜‚
HT we aren’t so “unrealistic” now expecting 4th, we got it right mate. We’ll done.
Just hope and expect a fantastic result at the weekend
To all the “happy clappers” like me, I’m glad we were positive, we didn’t forget Audere est Facere.
    Gloat over COYS.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Jod – maybe if you developed a sense of humour.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Niall – did you just say that Jod was wrong. Are you seriously suggesting he got something wrong.

  • BelgianSpur says:

What an unbelievable situation we find ourselves in – top 4 finish in our hands on the last day of the season. Against an already relegated team.

On one hand, what a fantastic place to be in.

On the other, I dare not say it but all of the ingredients are there for a collapse of epic proportions, the type that we as Spurs fans are unfortunately all too familiar with.

I can’t be the only VS poster who has had those thoughts? We just have to keep it together one more game…

If we get top 4, Conte will have performed a miracle. You can’t not be excited about the future under him.

We’ve had plenty of luck along the way but Conte managed to keep us within touching distance long enough to be able to capitalise on others’ mistakes.

It won’t be a classic season and in fact, our highest possible points tally of 71 points would mean finishing outside the top 4 about half the time over the last 10 seasons.

For the neutral fan, we are maybe the best out of a bad bunch, but I’ll gladly take it.

We need one more big performance and we are back in the CL. In fact, even a mediocre performance resulting in a draw would do.
We just can’t fall apart. Is that too much to ask?

  • Niall D says:

    Hi DH
    Yep m8
He did say I re wrote history earlier, where I said he thought both our new signings were crap, indeed he didn’t but he did say that they we little more than re enforcements, and intimated they weren’t next level, mind you after seeing em play a cameo of just 20 mins.
That (banter) went back and forward to a point where he stated he would look at what we said (in February) later on, I was going to let it go, but if any of you can be arsed looking at February’s posts you may find that mine have been more accurate to our current outcome.
so I actually did go back 3 months to what he said, and indeed that was part of his statement early February, I’m not normally this pedantic.
But after his rather dismissive comments over mine and others posts this season, I thought I would bring the subject up.
At differing times on these posts we can all be right or wrong in equal measure, and we may not agree with others posts, but it’s the down right arrogance and dismissive nature of Jod’s posts.
Plus as you say there needs to be a bit of banter between us, as we all make a real Rickky now, and again, for me it’s hands up I got it wrong and many, a time I have said “mea culpa” on this site.
But (it seems) just like he lacks empathy with with others posts, he also (appears) to lack a sense of humour. πŸ˜‰
We all goad each other, or chuck a stone in the, water for the ripples now and again, just for the Craic on a boring week, but there’s a difference between that and just dismissing others quite valid posts in quite an imperious fashion.
There are times when he can put quite a valid balanced point across in an appropriate manner.
It just don’t happen all that often.
In short m8, yep he got it wrong.
    Back to football
    BS
    Well said m8
It is fantastic, we’re back in Poch territory and we did it with a very limited squad against the odds.
Re Conte’s future, I do think he is really up for the “cut and thrust” of the premiership over the likes of the French league, I do see him with us for the next 3 or so years.
Plus I look forward to the next season when he actually gets to work with his own squad of players.
Hoping for a big result at the weekend COYS.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

    Top post Niall

  • Allan says:

PY An interesting comment ref Chelsea .
Can’t see it happening but neither did I expect us to be playing for 4th !!

  • BelgianSpur says:

PY – if we’re honest, I think if we finish 4th, it’ll be down to fortune more than merit. We were really inconsistent at various points in the season (WLWLWLWL) and we are just lucky that Man U, West Ham and Arsenal were even more inconsistent.

In the end only the results and the final table count but as I said in another post, that sort of performance over the course of a season won’t often get us a top 4 finish.

Not to say we can’t enjoy it of course but it’s hard to make a case for it being a logical outcome either.

If you are going to playfully gloat, I will also point out that you and HT also made the prediction of a top 4 finish when Nuno was still our manager πŸ˜‰.

One thing IS for sure: there’s no way we were finishing 4th with him at the helm! Your prediction has immensely been helped by the fact that the club were willing to cut their losses early and turn to a world class manager to fix it.

We’ll all make predictions and be right some of the time, wrong some of the time. As I was once told on VS, even a broken clock is right twice a day!

Right or wrong, in the end it doesn’t matter too much as we can all come together as Spurs fans and enjoy it, whether it is what we thought was going to happen or not.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Regarding Chelsea, Roman may yet decide that he doesn’t want to agree with the UK government’s terms. Imagine that: Chelsea doesn’t get their license for next year and is kicked out of the EFL, and we finish 3rd by default. The only thing I’d dislike in that scenario is Arsenal being giffted 4th, but the pleasure of seeing Chelsea dismantled would suffice!

  • Niall D says:

    Hi BS
In PYs defence, it was my “gloat fest” but I did temper it with my last statement, similar to yours where I said we can be right or wrong in many occasions over the period of a season.
But I never thought we’d get 4th under Nuno πŸ˜‰
With that said to agree with you, we as Spurs fans can enjoy our current position.
All the better because, we were in a bit of a flux and indeed rebuild, so all the better for that.
Would love the Chelsea scenario to come true, but it won’t, probably more back handers to the right people in order to keep them there.

  • Geofspurs says:

I would love to see Son score two (or three) goals and clinch the GB. Imagine the smile on his face!

  • Geofspurs says:

Re Chelsea …. I would be devasted if something happened to prevent the Chelsea WSL team from competing. I am sure few of you follow the WSL league but have to say that the FA Cup Final between chelsea and City was by far one of the most entertaining games I watched all season. It was end to end football for 120 minutes. My interest, obviously, is because of Sam Kerr who is well placed in the discussion about who is the best female player in Europe. If it wasn’t for Kerr going to Chelsea I would have no idea of the raidly developing state of female football and how watchable it is.

Sorry about that …. but it is football related and the game marches on under many guises.

    • BelgianSpur says:

Agree Geof. There would be unfortunate collateral damage if Chelsea collapsed.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Sam could always transfer to Spurs if Chelsea went belly up Geof, wouldn’t that put a smile on your face!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I have read and heard a lot of people say that Spurs have eventually managed to currently be in 4th place in the EPL and possibly (hopefully) finish in 4th, because of other teams failures as much as anything that Spurs have done. But this is a familiar theme on VS, among us Spurs supporters.. Every season in recent years that we have finished in CL places, the same sort of reasoning is given. That it was more to do with the mediocity of others than the ability of the Spurs team itself. This was especially apparent when we finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd in those 3 consecutive seasons.

But why isn’t this actually seen as a more logical consequence of the EPL being such a really tough and so highly competetive league, that it makes it extremely hard for all but the likes of M City Chelsea and Liverpool (in recent years) to be as consistent as those that are regularly in the top 3?

Almost every match we play, most on here will express how tough the opposition will most likely be (for whatever reasons) regardless of where they are in the league at any given time. And yet when any of the teams (low or high in the PL) do then give us a hard time, more often than not, it’s then expressed on here, in no uncertain terms, that the opposition were made to look good because the Spurs team were/are mediocre.

When we beat City on both occasions this season, I wonder., was it because Spurs were good enough to, or was it that on those days City were just so mediocre? (Likewise with the two draws with Pool)…

If Spurs do indeed finish in 4th come Sunday evening, it will be fully merited by the results we have have achieved over a full season of 38 EPL matches. And not by luck or chance.

And yes BS, I predicted Spurs to finish in 4th right at the start of the season, and continually throughout the season. And after a loss, draw or win, I remained positive. From when we sat at the top at the start of this season, and even when we were 7th/8th/9th in the league, First under Nuno and then under Conte… And, with or without the exact same players in the squad.

When I make such predictions, it’s because I beleive it to be the best case scenario I can see, given the players, team, squad we have, and relative to all the other PL clubs. And also knowing that managers rarely stay around for long if things go wrong. I just make positive predictions that shows my faith in the club that I support. But, if they do worse than any of my predictions, you will never see me on here moaning or complaining. And no, it’s not because I’m a mere “Happy-Clapper, It’s simply because I understand just how tough the PL is and how bloody hard it is to acheive solid consistency throughout a full season and through all the competitions we have played in. I never expect us to always win or finish in the top 4 or higher. But that doesn’t mean that I think that we can’t. (Not these days)!

    And when I predict this:

    Norwich City 0-7 Tottenham Hotspur!

    It’s because I think it’s doable… But, 1-0 will do… Even 0-0 will do… But 7-0 does sound so much better!

    Up the Spurs!

    • PompeyYid says:

HT….thanks from me with agreement, got there before me, words n mouth come to mind, but probably posted more eloquently by yourself.

      BS…Haha and thanks.

Niall, thankyou, but I really didn’t take any afront from BS, am a big boy now lol! but thankyou anyway.

As for Sunday I would love to see HT’s prediction but am going for the lesser myself 0-6 lol! COYS
