Match Thread – Can Spurs Get Three Points From The Barcodes

|

Having secured back to back victories over Brighton and Hove Albion and West Ham United ahead of the late March international break, Tottenham Hotspur are back in action on Sunday afternoon as we welcome Newcastle United to White Hart Lane.

Newcastle (ignoring wider issues with their takeover) have had a woeful season again and were hot favourites for the drop this year until their form slightly improved in more recent weeks. With that said, ahead of the break they registered back to back losses so whilst Eddie Howe’s side will be looking to get back to winning ways to draw a line, manager Antonio Conte should be going into this one full of confidence and ready to watch us register three on the spin.

Unless there are late injury issues from the remaining internationals scheduled, it’s a case of as we were with Japhet Tanganga, Ryan Sessegnon and Oliver Skipp ruled out, and although there is a doubt over Ben Davies, he should make it for the weekend really. Newcastle on the other hand have a plethora of names out, and although one or two might pass late fitness tests, the injury situation is something we really should be taking advantage of.

All eyes to Sunday then.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Afternoon Danny, a big thanks again for your thread.

Geordies next then, so another 3 pts, yes its going to be a tough game, but we will win. COYS

  • block 108 spurs says:

I hope spurs players get back into their club frame of mind quickly from international games. Conte will have had time to work with remaining squad to improve their fitness and understanding of his tactical systems. As DW and PY said I also think we will get 3 points as newcastle will try to hit us on the counter attack thus leaving space for spurs defence / mf to move the ball quickly forward so hk10 sonny kulu can score. A 2-0 win COYS.

  • jod says:

No idea what to expect from Newcastle. At Bournemouth Howe built a team that knew how to attack but not defend. But at Newcastle its been different and defence has had a much higher priority. The jury is still out on how good they really are but there’s no denying they have been getting some good results. Its going to be a lot harder to beat them next season once they start spending the oil money.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 Newcastle United!

  • block 108 spurs says:

Jod…If Levy / joe / board of directors (alan sugar etc) back Conte with transfers in of quality players retain HK10 this summer spurs will be hard to beat next season.

IMO…Top quality world class / CL players wont be joining newcastle for mega wages as they have got lucrative deals already, until they see progress of their (barcodes) PL standing and european cup & league qualification, and a top title / trophy wining manager as eddie howe is unknown in Europe. So about 18 mths / 2 years before they will be a big threat to top 6 clubs. COYS

    • PompeyYid says:

108, I really hope your reasoning works regards the Geordies, but for the life of me “money talks big! and loud!”

Do not be surprised that they don’t have the biggest wage bill by the end of next season or even during it! COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I still think they will have trouble bringing top players to the north-east, of course there will always be some attracted by top dollar. The new spending regulations that will replace the current FFP rules are supposed to prevent clubs having wage bills that can’t be supported by normal commercial activity …… that’s if it works better than FFP!

  • Niall D says:

    TQ must agree
Regardless of wages, there are players who won’t go there.
Do Newcastle have that draw for players, considering their current league position and indeed where they are in the country.
It was difficult enough for the like of N”Dombele with us, he couldn’t settle even in the capital, I vaguely remember one of the Laudrup bros being unhappy in a team due to location.
If you’re earning 120 k in a club you’re happy in would you move for 150k??
It is talking telephone nos, and I do feel N/Castle will need to pay big bucks, even for average players.
Re FFP it looks like we are in a pretty good situation to spend big, if the purse strings, are loosened.
But surely even selling the guys we loaned out would bring in a decent dividend.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Jod – I would also argue that despite some recent signs of more consistency, you don’t really know what to expect from Spurs. It should be a good game on Sunday, I think Newcastle will be quite cautious so an early goal would be nice.
Arsenal have 10 games left. Who know what their results will be but a reasonable assumption would be for them to get around 18 points – 5 wins, 3 draws and 2 defeats. On that basis we would need 22 points from our 9 games – 7 wins., 1 draw and 1 defeat which is a tough ask especially as we still have to go to Anfield. I think we need to hope that Arsenal slip up where they are not expected to.

  • PompeyYid says:

All “Hope” is not lost of a 4th place finish! YET! lol!

Anything can happen in the next 810mins+ COYS.

  • Niall D says:

Newcastle just like W/Ham are one of our bogey teams.
I remember us battering them about 2 seasons ago, the keeper had a blinder he saved with his feet, his nose, his teeth even his hair,
then they got a dodgy decision and somehow got a point.
But we usually have our “bad luck” games, against em away, so hopefully at home we should be OK, not too much damage done injury wise with the internationals.
Would love the team to resume where they left off , so hoping for HT’s prediction to come true. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Are you all UP! for this game? I am, we is going to win! simple as that lol! COYS

    • wentworth says:

Surely we can do better than Doherty and Emerson. Doherty on left has no left foot and Emerson Royal had no feet but a cool haircut.
Where are our youngsters? No one could be worse than these two.

  • Geofspurs says:

I’m expecting the Kane/Son combination to break the PL ‘assist and scoring record’ three times.

  • wentworth says:

Eriksen scores another cracker for Brentford.

  • jod says:

Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. When the Arabs took over Man City they just paid players more than anyone else and had no problem building a top level squad. The trophies followed. Newcastle will buy success in exactly the same way. Luckily that’s next season’s problem.

I had pencilled in Arsenal to drop three points against Chelsea but they have just lost 4-1 to Brentford, maybe the fall out from the Abramovich situation. If so it could be an interesting end to the season.

  • Niall D says:

    Jod indeed an interesting situation.
I would love to see Chelsea, who let’s face it, bought several titles in the last couple of decades, go into free fall and drop like, a stone to around 10th leaving it open for us and yes even Arse to make top 3, but sadly, I cannot see that happen.
Given the week they have had, indeed Chelsea may have had a “blip” but in reality they do seem too strong a squad to fold completely, much as I’d love it.

  • jod says:

Niall D – It depends on the reason for the performance. If its just that they were focused on the upcoming European games then yes, its just a blip. If its players worried about where Chelsea is going and their future it may have more impact. It doesn’t really affect us, we just try and win every game and see what happens.

  • wentworth says:

What a performance from Brentford. Watch Christian Eriksen’s sprint to score yet another goal. We need this sort of midfielder with vision.

Come On You Spurs….let the Geordies ave it.

What a cool head under a bit of pressure yesterday…good on ya Erik’ well played that man. COYS

  • Niall D says:

Yep I suppose more than a grain of truth in what you say.

I had 1/2 an ear on a T/sport item re Chelsea, where the reporter was predicting a large slice of doom and gloom for Chelsea, aparently something like 25 % revenue is from advertising and sponsorship, which they ‘I think”cant use at present, their gate receipts unlike us, don’t actually make up much of their over all profits,
much of it seems to come from “uncle Roman” who still owns the club,
There are a lot of players looking over their collective shoulders wondering if they’ll be part of a “fire sale” over the summer, so it could have an effect on their play for the rest of the season and indeed will they even get their wages for this season.
With their wage and finance structure, will a prospective buyer invest in Chelsea in the same way.
In short in two years time will Newcastle and Chelsea swop places🤔.
As I said I only was listening to parts of the broadcast.
Re today Hoping for a HT result COYS.

    • wentworth says:

Great third goal. Superb approach play from Kane ( our best midfielder), Kulu and Son. Spurs at their best.

      • wentworth says:

OMG at 75 mins we bring on Winks and Moira. What is the matter with Conte? The game is won…..bring on White, Scarlett and Bowden…they are covered in cobwebs from snoozing on the bench. Very, very sad. Totally disillusioning for our youngsters..

  • wentworth says:

Amazing performance from our top midfielder. Harry Kane ….man of the match by far.
