Match Thread – Can Spurs Find Their Mojo Against The Pensioners

|

Few fans would’ve been disappointed with Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the 2021/22 Premier League campaign, but following defeat to Crystal Palace and that veritable ‘no show’ – it sadly wasn’t a one off looking at the overall performance against Rennes in midweek, albeit we took a point for our efforts.

The more optimistic in the fanbase will take the positives from the performance, particularly with a number of changes made again, but the more pessimistic will continue to have worries given how quickly the wheels have fallen off and we’ve become so open at the back.

This is hardly the perfect time to face high flying Chelsea, even with White Hart Lane advantage, as despite sitting only a point behind them in the early table, a repeat of the last two performances could see a very humbling scoreline on Sunday evening.

It doesn’t get easier when you consider Nuno Espirito Santo is without Japhet Tanganga (suspension), Giovani Lo Celso, Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez (still quarantine) and there are continuing doubts about Son Heung-Min and Eric Dier. That’s before we factor in the severity of injury suffered by Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn in the last game.

Let’s see what Nuno does…To Dare Is To Do after all.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

As someone else has pointed out, if we are only able to put out half a team against Chelsea we will still be damned if we don’t get any sort of result, such is the unforgiving nature of some Spurs supporters.

  • jod says:

And we will still be told how lucky we are to be playing in Europe in a joke competition despite the damage its doing to the squad.

  • allan says:

Stan I appreciate your point but all I want is to see my team play good football . So whoever is chosen to play I expect a cohesive team performance . This means good passing , no hoofing the ball forward to no one except the opposition and being able to work our way out of a press .
While we have a real problem with injuries and Covid I have to say yet again that if we had a transfer strategy which did not rely on buying prospects rather than relacing proven Prem players then I don’t think that our situation would be so difficult . The common denominator in all this is Levy .

  • block 108 spurs says:

Stan.. yes there will be a fair bit of fans getting on social media to put their “annoyed” views. We can only hope the 3 returning players are in the starting team and tanguy, HK10 etc. have a better game than thursday night. Chelsea will be going for the win and will try to outplay spurs, we will be lucky to get a draw, but a 1-0 win will be a great result for us, if our manager and players get their mojo back. COYS

  • allan says:

Why all this arrogance about us playing in a ” joke comp ” ? Unfortunately we are not the mighty Spurs and why we are always put into the big 6 is beyond me since our trophy cabinet has been empty for how long ? Oh yes I forgot we won the joke cup comp . ( How many years ago ? )
We were not good enough to qualify for the joke Thursday Europa cup so perhaps we have found our mediocre level ?
Bergs was injured from the internationals and Mora because of his playing style gets fouled fairly regularly whoever we play .

  • allan says:

Well tomorrow will be a very testing time for the team and I absolutely hate saying this but I can’t see us getting anything from this game .
The worrying thing for me about Thursday was how easily Rennes got through us and with better players would have won the game convincingly .
Chelsea have a far better team than Rennes and I hate to think what the scoreline will be if we allow them the space and room to play .

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I said the same on the previous thread allan, if we allow Chelsea to play through us as easily as Rennes did it could get embarrassing. I really hope Romero at least is fit to play on Sunday.

  • jod says:

allan – Silly me I actually thought Moura and Bergwijn started the European game and then got taken off injured and therefore if they hadn’t played midweek they would have been available Sunday. But in an “alternative truth” Donald Trump would have been proud of you have explained the European game had nothing to do with them missing Sunday. Do you genuinely not understand that if you play more games with the same number of players you get more fatigue, more injuries and a lower level of performance ? So if those games are in a worthless competition why are we risking our players in them ?

  • wentworth says:

Why does no one want to come to the once might Spurs? We have a 6th choice manager/coach and no decent signings despite our magnificent stadium and wonderful training facilities.
We have signed Sanchez, N’Dombele and Lo Celso who have all been pretty disappointing for many reasons. Poor signings.

Not so long ago we faced Chelsea with Audevereld, Vertongen, Walker, Rose, Dembele, Eriksen andd a goalscoring Dele and beat them easily.

Tomorrow, we will struggle with a less than convincing coach and a very depleted team with no youngsters to step up and grab the opportunity.
This is going to be a long dismal season and lots of drastic changes will be needed very soon.
Perhaps at 6.15 pm tomorrow, I will be proven totally wrong.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

jod……it’s just your opinion that it is a worthless competition, others have a right to see it as cup worth competing for. Doesn’t take long for you to revert to type and diss everyone else’s opinion in a condescending manner.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

On the basis that we have zero chance of qualifying for the Champions League and almost zero chance of qualifying for the Europa League, I would say that the Cups are our best chance of silverware this season – I include the Conference League in that. Although in Jod’s “alternative truth” world that the equally delightful Donald Trump would be proud of, he probably thinks we have a chance of qualifying for the Champions League through our league position.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

A few thousand tickets available for the game tomorrow. A sign of the times I think. Shows how far we have fallen in the last couple of years. The highest ticket prices in Europe to watch the most boring team in the premier league.

  • 123spurs says:

Now arsenal will be looking to go on level points with us, after 3 wins, 3 defeats we now meet at the crossroads. The conference cup is the easiest of the 4 cups. No fight, no desire, another defensive coach, buying prospects, weak mentality, dead wood still on the book’s. Pampered living the good life and and nothing in return. A shambles on and off the pitch.

  • wentworth says:

Lots of vey disgruntled Spurs fans on here today…me included. The whole club seems disorganised and rudderless…. dubious coach, poor signings, few future stars, weak subs bench, too many non starters and some of the team playing below par.
We need a big result tomorrow.

  • Drdrums11 says:

Winks has no creative ability and if he starts tomorrow’s game we’ll be doomed.

  • Niall D says:

My goodness full of doom and gloom here folks.
To a degree I’m actually with Jod here, not that I think the Conference trophy is a joke, but I do think it is the least important of our competitions, and given the current state of our team, was it worth risking any first teamers, given that we were facing Chelsea with a much depleted squad, thanks to the international debacle.
However having seen the Man C result yesterday, anything can happen, we are in a rebuild currently, are the recruits who were brought in the right ones? in the right positions? Did we get the right manager?
For me I’m not going to jump the gun just yet, I feel we have a ways to go to get where we want to be.
Will Nuno be a nono at Tottenham? I’m going to give the guy a chance, bear in mind, I don’t think our new signings have really even kicked a ball in anger yet in the Premier league and certainly haven’t done it together yet.
I just think we’re going to click, it hasn’t happened yet, we’ve had a poor start, not results wise, but team wise, I would argue that the full squad has only gotten together today, if the Croatian contingent has arrived back, I would hope we now get more than 3 weeks to actually gel as a squad, with their new manager.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Having just read all the comments (on another thread) about Harry Kane, I have to wholeheartedly agree with Niall and his opinions on Harry. But I’ll take it one step further and suggest that he has been just as poor for England as well, as he has been for Spurs…

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that this will continue. He may well play a blinder for Spurs today and show his true worth to us… I do hope so…

My take on it all, is not that Spurs players (or his England team mates) are not doing well enough to support Harry in his play. But that Harry has not been doing well enough himself to allow them to support him in his play. His strength, movement and overall commitment seems to be lacking. He wouldn’t get away with that at City! He would find himself on the bench…

    Oh well…

As for todays match, I really don’t know… I’ll just wait and see. maybe Spurs will shine. Maybe Chelsea will have an off day. Maybe Nuno will tactically outsmart Tuchel. Maybe I’m wrong about Harry… Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner…. Blah, blah!

    COME ON YOU SPUUURS!

    THFC 4-3 CFC!

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I’m sad to hear that Greavsie has passed away…

Loved the player. Loved the man.

Of course, he was not only a Spurs legend, but a Chelsea favourite too…

Both sets of supporters today will no doubt pay a touching tribute to him…

    It’s a funny old game. Ain’t it?

    RIP Jimmy.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Yes, I have just seen the anouncement, RIP Jimmy.

  • PompeyYid says:

Bleedin bloody Hell, one of my all time Spurs Legends as departed us, am in total shock…..
    RIP MR JIMMY GREAVES.

it is an earie thing! the day of Spurs v Chavs the great Jimmy passes, an all time Legend of ours and a great fave of the Chavs.
