Match Thread – Can Spurs Bury Boro On Tuesday Evening

|

With a solid 4-0 victory over Leeds United returning Tottenham Hotspur to winning ways after the shambles of the Burnley result, we now head into the FA Cup fifth round distraction on Tuesday evening as we make the trip up to The Riverside Stadium to face Middlesbrough.

Having largely blown our games in hand in the Premier League and lost the opportunity of stealing a march on those sides ahead of us in the race for a Champions League spot, a route to Wembley remains open for us here but despite the margin of the Leeds victory, we will certainly have to improve our overall performance levels as Boro are more than in the battle for the Play-Off spots in the second tier.

On an injury front, we could potentially welcome back both Lucas Moura and Rodrigo Bentancur given their slight knocks, but otherwise the squad will be as you’d expect as the game presumably comes too quick for both Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga.

All eyes to Tuesday and hopefully progression, baring any unforeseen interruptions to our preparations.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

I think that the danger is in believing that we are the better side and trying to outplay Boro. They will have done their homework and will press us into mistakes if we try to get too fancy. Much as I would like to see us control the game with slick passing, the ball over the top remains our best chance of maximising our strengths up front.

  • BelgianSpur says:

I can’t imagine Boro are going to attack us. They’lll stay compact because they know that’s what we struggle against most.

Let’s just hope the difference in individual quality pays off.

    Morning folks
    Danny thanks for the thread,
hey hey we finally made it on to the BBC after years of them showing Man U FA Cup games 😉.
I see a win for us.
My reasoning, Boro’ have proven to be a pretty dangerous team against Premiership teams, so there is no shock in what they can now do.
I feel we can progress in this competition, as there are few other distractions, so for me a win is on the cards. COYS.

Niall, you asked how me n mine were, well Mrs PY has contracted Covid, god knows how, she has failed, me passed, Covid home tests for the past 5 days, she looks way better today, told her so, but she is getting there.

      Thanks for asking!

How are you and your kin holding out. COYS

  • PompeyYid says:

Tough game coming up, but I can see only a win for us, ever the optimist lol!

Thanks for the thread Danny! Where would we be without you? that’s right silent lol!

Tough game coming up, but I can see only a win for us, ever the optimist lol!

Sadly, if recent weeks have proven anything, it’s that there is no sure thing with Spurs.

Having said that, I still back us to progress, but it will not be as easy as some might think.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi PY
All OK this end, tho’ a few round me aren’t so good, My Bro'(ManU scum) caught COVID
As did my band chum as you say”oppo” so we haven’t got out playing, maybe no bad thing currently.
Re the game, I’m much the same opinion as you, can only see a win for us.
Stay safe both you and your missus 🙏
    Good luck.🍀😉

    • PompeyYid says:

Hey there Niall, your an oppo, military term for mate, as well!

Thanks for the best wishes, unfortunately Mrs PY Failed the home test again this AM, though she is looking a hell of a lot better, so light at the end of the tunnel.

Glad also all is well with you and your kin, obviously give the MU Scum, my best wishes choke lol!!

It will be a tough game tonight, but we have way better pedigree, so a win for me! COYS

Ummmm. Surely we can do better than Doherty, Winks and Sessegnon. Can’t wait for our young stars to step up and provide some more exciting and creative options.
Having said that, they will all have outstanding contributions tonight just to prove me wrong.
Bergweijn is another who is only a one hit wonder and has little less in the locker.
Just hope White, Devine and Scarlett get a run out tonight. Always looking to the future.

  • Allan says:

Having seen how Burnley frustrated us by swamping their penalty area and playing tight I can’t see Middlesborough playing any other game . However if they think they can take us on similar to Leeds then we will win and it ought to be a good game .
Let’s hope that it is the latter

  • Drdrums11 says:

It’s time Lucas to come in for Winks.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Isn’t Emerson Royal a good player

  • 123spurs says:

Aurier who left on a free was better royal who we paid 25mil for.

  • 123spurs says:

    Better then royal*

  • 123spurs says:

Had a feeling this would happen.
    Trophy cabinet for sale.
Clearly this formation ain’t working but conte still sticks with it.

  • Drdrums11 says:

What happened to Son tonight!? Worst game of his career as he consistently lost the ball and was beaten by his defender the entire game. This is so absolutely sad and frustrating to not only loose to a Championship side but get out played throughout. It also hurts to say that Conte’s decisions must be questioned. To leave Winks in the whole match was ridiculous as he adds nothing to our attack and is an absolute liability defending the midfield. To take off work for this dispirited and despicable performance is brutal.

  • 123spurs says:

Same ol weak bunch of bottlers.

  • 123spurs says:

Time to give some younger some game time, enough is enough, they cant be any worse. Yet conte still picks the likes of winks WTF

  • Drdrums11 says:

Exactly 123, how can this system work when we have nobody even decent to play the important wingback positions in the 3 back formation?

  • wentworth says:

Absolutely shocking. Total lack of creativity and skill.
Winks passed the ball forward twice in the whole game and lost it on various other occasions. Bergweijn brilliant chance to score but sadly no left foot. The rest of the time he was a non entity one hit wonder. Doherty has open goal and misses by miles, clueless waste of space. Emerson….well no comment.
They had a 33 year old midfielder who was man of the match and a teenager who scored a cracking goal.
We were just rubbish and did not deserve to get anything from this match.
Thanks Levy for investing in our squad after all the decent players left. Come back Walker, Rose, Aldervereld, Vertongen, Demebele Dele, Eriksen…..even Defoe would have brightened up our game at his age.
Totally disillusioned and dismayed. Even though, I keep banging on about a mediocre squad, lack of a creative midfielder who can pass forwards and some exciting youngsters.

  • BelgianSpur says:

Complacent, poor. Pick the word you want.

Say what you want about tactics but Conte’s tactics have proven effective. This group of players, Lloris aside, hasn’t won anything.

I am giving up any sort of hope for this season, and will focus on the rebuild in the TW. This season is gone.

  • Spurfect One says:

With this group of players we have tried 3-4-3, 4-3-3 , 4-2-3-1 , 5-2-3 and even 4-4-2 under Jose, Nuno and Conte and yet still haven’t found consistency. This surely means they are simply not good enough.
