Match Thread – Can Spurs Boing The Baggies Or Do We Lose Four On The Spin

|

With three Premier League defeats on the spin, Tottenham Hotspur fans are again asking serious questions about our style of play and the spirit in the dressing room under marmite manager Jose Mourinho. No doubt for some, one big question is will this simply get worse on Sunday afternoon as we welcome Sam Allardyce’s struggling West Bromwich Albion to White Hart Lane.

Our style wasn’t too bad at the beginning of the season but whether or not it’s Mourinho’s instructions, the sheer number of games that we have played or something else, it long hasn’t clicked now and our attempts at grinding out 1-0 victories is completely undone by our failure to remain tight at the back.

We go into Sunday’s clash sat in eighth place in the PL table and irrespective of the fact we are again missing Harry Kane through injury, there can be no doubts that we have regressed as an attacking force.

It’s been a strange old season when you look at results across the division, but we look half the side we were even a month ago. On paper, West Brom sat almost bottom of the table should be the perfect boost we need to get ourselves up and running again, but after the Brighton showing, few will be confident of that.

Ho hum, I’ll be hiding behind the settee with a stiff drink.

West Brom

Win

Draw

Lose

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

Perhaps my use of sorry was misconstrued here, not to go on with this debate, I felt sorry for the guys who are so (rightly) frustrated that they feel the only way to be rid of our manager.
I then went on to explain why (or evidence) why he won’t leave at present. That’s what I was regretting.
Py as usual a voice of calm.
However as usual I hope we win tomorrow. I hope the guys get their act together get some forward thinking and” blatter” big Sam’s team.
Now there is a manager I defo don’t like.

  • Geofspurs says:

Danny …… Is there a matchday thread for the Tottenham v Villa game? I can’t find it! TQ may know where to find it. : – )

    • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….I hadn’t realised we were playing today so have only been watching from 35 mins. There is no question our play has improved greatly under the new coach. We are 1-0 down a HT but if we keep playing as we are we should get back in it. I think what we really need is a top striker to push on from here.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

HT – I don’t understand. What on earth is fast, attacking all out front foot football. Is this a new concept in football

    • Geofspurs says:

HT …. I think it’s a stupid idea that started in the WSL … as if anyone would be interested in watching teams trying to score goals and players staying on their feet instead of rolling around and gesturing to the referee. Crazy!

    • Geofspurs says:

DH …. I think fast, attacking football was an idea developed in the WSL. Why on earth they thought it would catch on defies all logic. Who would want to see teams moving the ball forward and looking to score goals, or players staying on their feet instead of rolling around on the ground and gesturing at the referee? Crazy!

      • Geofspurs says:

Sorry about that. The first post didn’t appear and then I noticed it should have gone to DH in any case and therefore re-posted.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I don’t know DoncasterHotspur. I just made it up.

  • Niall D says:

    Hi folks
Firstly anyone having issues with the site today.
I couldn’t get on then, my last input seems to have been lost.
Hope it’s not the dreaded page two curse back.
I’ll try again apologies if something similar comes up later.
Re Sorry, I know one should never have to explain, however my use of” sorry “was more in empathy for those guys who (rightly) are so frustrated that they feel the only way for us to be rid of our manager is to lose a bunch of games, and whilst I feel their anger and frustration I couldn’t envisage wanting Spurs to lose at any cost.
PY as usual a voice of calm.
However back to the interesting stuff, unlike some here (understandably) I want us to win tomorrow I want us to “blatter” big Sam’s team”now there’s a manager I can’t abide.

    • Geofspurs says:

ND …. I’m sure you’re aware that people don’t always say what they mean, and may in fact say the opposite …. even more so when it comes to football.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Here’s a fun stat. This is the first time since November 2012, that Spurs have lost 3 PL matches on the trot. Nice one. Can we make it 4?!

  • Niall D says:

    Geof
Totally understand that people are just venting their frustration.
Just venting a bit myself in the current climate.
It’s like when people “jumped” on my fickle post.
We can all do it chum..
Off Topic just a bit, re the Chelsea game, I note “Frank” spent around 250 million in strengthening that side over the summer, well if that’s what 250 million buys, what hope is there.
Common Guys they were crap too, just a bit less crap than we were.

  • Geofspurs says:

TQ …. Spurs have put some really good passages of play together. They move forward with a lot more intensity and their teamwork shows a lot of progress and promise for the future. So far it’s the best performance that I’ve seen from them. Mind you, after watching our lads play lately, it doesn’t take much to impress me!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof….I’ve been disappointed in the second half, we are the better side but have very little threat around the opposition box, we’ve given the ball away very cheaply too many times as well.

    • Geofspurs says:

TQ … I agree about the second half, and the need for a striker. But there was some very good link-up play and swift movement of the ball in the first half. I think it bodes well for the future.

      • TQ2Spurs says:

Geof, there has been a marked improvement under the new manager, I’m very hopeful that this will continue and the club will invest going forward in order to make Spurs Womens team more competitive.

  • DoncasterHotspur says:

Niall – yes there are some issues with the site today – maybe Jose has taken over running it.

  • Niall D says:

    Good call DH.

    • TQ2Spurs says:

I reported a while back that there are still some minor issues with delays in posts appearing and also on creation of new pages. At least it’s not as annoying as it used to be!

  • wentworth says:

We will win tomorrow. Far too strong for WBA and that is saying something. However, may be a stay of execution. Where is Levy? He needs to start threatening Mourinho. Surely, Levy cannot be happy with all the many problems we have. Sort out the bullying of Dele for a start. You are supposed to be in charge of the club.

  • Niall D says:

Danny thanks yet again m8 for the thread. Don’t know how you get the time. It is appreciated.
WW as I said earlier, even if He (Levy) doesn’t read these sorts of pages, surely he couldn’t miss the vast quantities of comments from respected football analysts, Pundits, commentators, journalists etc all saying much the same thing. He must in all honesty have JM on the chair with a bright light in his face answering difficult questions.
But I still think it’s a wait and see brief until the end of the season, see where we are, and then who can we attract both player and management wise, given our league position, and if we then have any trophies behind us by that time. I do believe that JM’s days at Spurs are numbered regardless.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

The guy managing Brentford must have something about him, they lost their 2 main goalscorers from last season after just missing out on promotion but are still the top scorers in the championship and could go top by winning their game in hand over Norwich.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

If Jose sets up defensively against a side that has conceded 52 goals in 22 PL games we will know all is lost.

    • TK says:

but JM said he’s not setting the players up that way, that they’re doing so on their own. You believe him? I don’t.

  • OyvehMaria says:

The funny thing is I’m beyond fed up ….the last time I saw Spurs play this badly was under Andres Villas Boas… in fact… if you look at the choices of Managers Levy has made since ENIC took over in 2001 : David Pleat Jacques Santini – Martin Jol – Juande Ramos – Clive Allen – Harry Redknapp – André Villas-Boas – Tim Sherwood -Mauricio Pochettino -José Mourinho thats an average of 1 manager every two years. Pick the one you most enjoyed having as Manager !

  • TK says:

oyveh, maria, my favorite from this list was Poch, by far. If DL had paid for sufficient numbers of players for him, poch would have brought in numerous trophies. He did bring in a lot of football that was a true joy to watch.

as to the two least pleasurable to watch: JM and AVB, the would be JM clone.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

On Football Focus today the produced a list of PL players who had created the most chances so far this season, not suprisingly Grealish was top with around 80 I think and Fernandes was second not far behind. The list also unsurprisingly included Maddison and De Bruyne and stretched to about 8 or 9 names. It probably won’t surprise anyone that their wasn’t a Spurs player on the list shown, not even HK10.

It’s no surprise to me that all of the best performing sides had a player on the list, and the fact that we haven’t replaced Eriksen is the major flaw in our side.

  • wentworth says:

Worst managers… Oneday Ramos and Dinosaur Mourinho. Best managers by far … Bill Nicholson and Mauricio Pochettino. No contest.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

    Keith Birkinshaw?
