Match Thread – Can Jose Get The Better Of Brucie As Spurs Travel To Newcastle

|

Is it just me or does it feel like this end of March international break has gone on forever. Never fear though, there’s only a few sleeps left until Tottenham Hotspur make the trip up to St James’ Park to face Steve Bruce’s battling Newcastle United side.

Unless I’ve missed something during my little Vital Spurs hiatus as I’m not a huge international fan, short of maybe some tiredness I don’t believe any players will return worse for wear and that should give us a decent chance to make it back to back Premier League wins again after yet another recent wobble in our form and performance levels that also saw us booted out of the Europa League.

Manager Jose Mourinho will be unable to call on Ben Davies, but we’ll have to see what the later injury update says when it comes to Son Heung-Min, Matt Doherty and Sergio Reguilon. Erik Lamela will return following suspension.

17th placed Newcastle might not have won in their last five, but they are keeping their heads above the drain and have proven tricky for plenty of sides this year, even if they aren’t exactly potent or that threatening on the attack.

As ever though, this is the sort of side that on paper we know we are capable of blowing away, yet we all season long it’s the kind of game that has been our Achilles heel and we’ve struggled to perform in.

All eyes to Sunday as we can still end what was once a promising 2020/21 campaign on a high and with something to cheer about.

Newcastle

Win

Draw

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

Outplayed by a hopelessly out of form, injury ravaged Newcastle. A hopeless, aimless performance from a team whose coach’s methods are apparently second to none. What was the game plan today because I haven’t got a clue. It seems to be to do very little, hope for a decent counter attack or just hoof long balls up to Kane. Jose really hasn’t got a clue anymore. Please please please get rid of him now.

  • TK says:

If we had held on to win 1 x 2 we wouldn’t have deserved it.

Is my old man’s memory deceiving me? I remember that when Sanchez arrived he seemed to settle in quickly and look decent. Now he looks like he has no idea what he’s doing on the pitch. Was he always this discombobulated? why do I remember a positive beginning for him in his first matches with us?

  • Andre says:

Its like watching a re run of a very bad movie, as mentioned by TK so predictable. A 1 goal lead is never enough when it comes to Spurs, guaranteed we will conspire to throw the points away, not even remotely surprised. Sorry Harry, you can’t do it on your own mate.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

As has been said……you could see teir second goal coming from at least 15 minutes before they actually scored. Yet again so disappointing that we failed to take an opportunity, we allowed them to dominate the play at 2-1 up and in the first 15 minutes or so of the second half there was just 6% of the play in their defesive third.

  • Asher the smasher says:

I can’t watch Spurs play. It’s poor. Jose has gotta go. It’s ok if your winning but we are not. Every game is an under performance, win lose or draw. I don’t know what has happened to Jose but obviously he management standards have been declining for a while. I like many was hopeful with the good start even though the performance did not appear to be great. Please can we have a modern, talented manager next please and as soon as possible….

  • TK says:

Mourinho’s tenure at Spurs surely became shorter today. If DL doesn’t sack Mourinho after this season–or before–then he’s past his sell-by date. The cry will change from Mourinho Out to Mourinho and Levy Out.

The way the play is now under Mourinho, this site is a happier place when it’s a poetry site. FFS, it would be a happier place if we devoted ourselves to discussions about Brexit’s lingering mess. When we discuss football with Mourinho at the helm we are doomed to the death of hope.

Somebody called the match ‘The Jurassico’ on TS this morning in reference to the two managers. 🙂

  • TK says:

TQ25 purrs, you could see that late Newcastle goal coming not only 15 minutes before it came, but 15 days before it came. Perhaps 15 matches before it came. This is a pattern that has existed for quite some time now.

  • Niall D says:

    Well, well, well,
I could’ve predicted this one, yet again we contrived to Almost snatch defeat from the Jaws of victory, a chance to go top four even for a short time lost.
    What did we learn today.
    Our defence needs a rebuild,
Every time Sanchez got near the ball, I hid behind the sofa, he can’t head it to a safe area when it’s, at his feet it could go anywhere.
Unfortunately Tananga isn’t the answer at RB, Regs whilst good going forward, needs to work defensively.
I thought Rodon did fairly well though.
We managed to give them their first goal we were really under no pressure at that stage.
Harry Kane for all his many attributes, shouldn’t be the main free kick taker.
I know Bale didn’t do well with his, but it was his first kick of the game.
Vinny was fairly anonymous, and perhaps just isn’t made for the premiership.
Mourinho’s team selection was totally wrong, and timings and players used as subs was totally wrong.
    Spursy yet again.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

I clearly wasn’t the only one who thought Davinson had a poor game, I’m not sure how much that was down to having a rookie right back who was pushing up very high at times leaving him very exposed. His passing out of defence was very poor also conceeding possession which put us on the back foot.

  • TK says:

If someone starts taking up donations to buy a coffin for José, I’ll donate. He’s earned a good long rest. Far far away. We can buy him a nice going away present, all padded and comfortable for the long term. Ship him out.

Of course, he can use the coffin as a single bed while he’s still breathing. But ship him out, dead or alive. If he’s still walking about on our pitch or training grounds, he’s doing harm to THFC. Send him away or restrict his movement.

  • Frank Dore says:

Here we are again, lead into 85th minute, concede an equaliser and drop 2 points. Are we afraid of a top 4 spot, because every time we get close and other results help us we blow it. Kane must be losing his patience with this lot and be looking to go, and in teality who could blame him. Davison Sanchez terrible yet again as well as most of the defenders. In fairness this should have been a banker against the shambles that is NUFC. Sorry Jose but you have failed dismally.

  • TK says:

If you want to bring in Bale, why wait until there are only three minutes left in the match? It takes him 20 minutes to get his body moving. Good god, his first touch of the ball look like he was trying to send it over the Tyne.

  • PompeyYid says:

My anger has ceased already, I now officially give up!, the game from the first 10 or 15mins had a draw or defeat written all over it.

Go 1 down, up the pace, movement, passing etc = 2 goals back in 5 mins, then when winning back to the lackadaisacle, no battle, no drive, no nothing only need to turn up to win football returns, you couldn’t really make it up, but Spurs prove you can.

    Come On You SPURSY.

  • Geofspurs says:

Nothing to add to what’s already here!! Thank god for Sam Kerr and her team in the WSL (our lads should have watched that game before they kicked off)).

  • Love totty says:

Why does anybody think that Reguilon is decent? His own attribute is his ability to deliver a cross, but that only if he is totally free to do so. Faced with a defender he is clueless and repeatedly loses possession leaving a gap at the back. Of course he is not the only one who can’t retain possession or win 50/50 balls.

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Hi Geof, I managed to keep one eye on our game against City, we looked to give them a few problems despite going down 0-3. As I’ve said before though, we desperately need some better quality attacking midfielders and strikers.

  • TK says:

With a cry from his soul despairing
He bowed him down to the earth and wept
But a voice cried aloud from the driving rain
    Arise and plant again

    Sweet tooth, anyone?
    toffee being served soon

  • TQ2Spurs says:

LT….in his defence I think he is short of match fitness after returning from injury. You could say the same about Sonny who didn’t really get into the game today, I though it strange that he appeared to be playing in the number 10 role behind Kane for much of the 45 rather than on the wing.

  • Allan says:

I have said this many times that our passing is awful . 1 2 3 touch football slows us down .
Virtually every team we have played knows where their players are , resulting in good passing 1 touch and possession . We play like 11 individual players without any idea of where their fellow players are .
What can one say about Bale …. pathetic
The sooner we can get in a manager to unify the team and play decent football then the better . However the wonderful Levy will not sack Mourinho until at least after the LC final and even then will he be here in August ?
What a dire and woeful performance !
