Match Thread – Another Day, Another Game – When Will This Maccabi Spurs Madness End

|

I’m beginning to think Tottenham Hotspur fixtures in the 2020/21 campaign are largely like buses…you wait ages for one, and then about 16 turn up in the space of two minutes. Taking victory over Chelsea in the EFL Cup via the penalty route only 30 seconds ago, it’s almost time for Thursday evening’s Europa League Qualifying Play-Offs clash with Maccabi Haifa.

We can expect changes again and manager Jose Mourinho certainly wouldn’t have wanted to introduce Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Lucas Moura in the last one as he would’ve wanted a full 90 minutes off for proper rotation – but needs must and at least we have three days between our next two clashes and then an international break where, and I say this politely, Gareth Southgate and other international managers can … I’m sure you can imagine.

Maccabi Haifa...

Win

Draw

Lose

Despite the taxing schedule, we simply cannot blow it now or take our foot off the pedal in the way we did first half against Chelsea as all this effort will have been for nought and at least October is far more sensible on a calendar front.

Make it count, enjoy the break, develop short term injuries and we’ll be ready to again.

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

  • El Jefe says:

Good solid team put out 100% (brimming with full international’s no less) – pretty obvious though already really (see it’s Hart like I thought it might be originally) fair play Bergs despite our hope for Dele LOL – granted this ridiculous week no doubt whatsoever but worthy of noting nonetheless – no CB or STR on the bench unfortunately!

2 further signings needed by Monday 11pm – Vinicius hopefully is the STR but whose going to be the CB then indeed?!

Roll on the group stage and BT coverage 🙁

  • jod says:

El Jefe – If we get centre forward I’m not going to lose any sleep if we don’t get a centre half, cover for Kane is way more important. In terms of numbers the squad is definitely getting there.

    welcome vinny.

He’s back. Man of the Match. Dele. Excellent performance and superb trick for the pen. Great to see him in midfield. Full of good passing. We must keep him.

Next round roll on Sunday and the Divers.

A good win.. but some sloppy passing by spurs. Could be the green shirts and shorts on Maccbi camoflaged them ?

Harry was knackered at 60 mins subbed after his hatrick 75 mins. and he kicked their no. 16 player fani as well perfect answer to his insulting remark. Dele did well for his penalty… Lucas headed a goal, who said he is too short.. lol. Lo celso 2 goals. Now onto Man Utd sunday… COYS

  • TQ2Spurs says:

Stoke away in the QF……..draw couldn’t have been kinder!

  • TQ2Spurs says:

2 of Manu, City, Everton & Arseanal will go out in thr quarters and either Brentford or the Toons wil be in one semi. 🙂

  • jod says:

Two more diabolical hand ball decisions, this time at least it didn’t affect the result. Things are just beginning to go our way. Looks like we are going to get Vinicius on a loan with an option to buy, which is ideal. The international break will give us a bit of breathing space and even afterwards we won’t be playing three times a week. We appear to have put together a proper squad which means there is competition for places and the manager can rotate. The defending is a work in progress and probably will be for the rest of the season. But with the bonus of more players chipping in with goals we have real fire power.

  • 123spurs says:

exactly this time last year we lost 7-2

  • Geofspurs says:

    123 …. I didn’t enjoy that as much.

  • Geofspurs says:

I love the way describes playing 180 minutes in three days as inhuman. How about 270 minutes in three days, Jose. That’s how it used to be …. and there were no subs! And you had people like Mackay sliding in for the tackle. The good old days. : – )

  • jod says:

Geofspurs – You are missing the point. In the “good old days” everybody was playing the same. What we have been doing is playing more frequently than everyone we were playing against. I can remember Mark Lawrenson once talking about the size of squads. Yes, he said, you can win the league with a 17 man squad as long as everyone else has a seventeen man squad. The moment one club goes to 22 you do the same or you are dead. Given an equal number of games of equal intensity our squad is now strong enough to compete with anyone. But its rarely equal in modern football. English teams always have it tougher in Europe because the premier league is harder and takes more out of the players than any other league. Adding in extra games has made it a significantly tougher start for us in particular this time around, hopefully it should now settle down.

  • Geofspurs says:

jod …. That was my point! Everybody had to play three games in four days over Christmas and Easter …. without subs. What did you think my point was? You’re talking about a few teams today, I’m talking about ALL of them back then. It was tough for all of them but they just got on with it.

  • PompeyYid says:

Geofspurs….to right, everybody equal, what about reverse day fixtures say home on Saturday, away on Sunday v the same team, aye me lad! when men were men haha! those were the days.

Our Team/Squad this season is getting there, yes still some poor stuff, but the better/good stuff is starting to shine through, just like the sun breaking up a miserable cloudy day. COYS
