Match Thread – A Palace Of A Distraction But Spurs Have To Look To 2020/21

|

It’s been a strange old season and it’s been a strange calendar year for Tottenham Hotspur. The highs of the Champions League Final and then the lows of seeing our form and usual performance levels fall through the floor – but Crystal Palace this Sunday is a final chance for some joy before we tick quickly into the 2020/21 season.

What kind of performance we see from Jose Mourinho’s charges is absolutely anyone’s guess, but the first half showing against Leicester City certainly gave some cheer and fans would welcome more of that, but there is also the Europa League question to answer and it will go down to the final day’s results with us currently sat in seventh place in the table and a point behind Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Whatever Sunday may bring, the curtain on 2019/20 comes down and we all know we need to strengthen further in the summer, we need a decent pre-season and we need to hit next year running, otherwise fears that the wheels have truly fallen off the Spurs bus will grow.

We can’t allow all that progress and a nice and bright shiny new stadium to fall away as our Champions League hopes did this season. The only question is, will we?

Until then, Palace and all three points, please!

Tottenham Hotspur's foundations lie in another sport, which one?

There you go EJ; just to prove my point. That was a TW post! It could’ve so easily been an article

Enjoy your roast. I’ve literally just seasoned some chicken and peeled the veg for mine… 🙂

  • El Jefe says:

Touche HT – we’re having roast chicken also lol – enjoy your’s aswell mate!

Yes I thought that post might come back at me as being similar to an article posting lol!

I do like my speculation HT lol – always have done since I was a boy – especially as regards Spur’s – the fact we never win anything means one (like myself lol) is always hoping for new signing’s that might just 1 day take us to that new level – let’s wait and see!

Was also posting on the LSE Lloyds board (business calls even at the weekend lol – especially at the moment) so came back quickly to check on here but now definitely off LOL!

HT to be fair don’t even know how to post a bloody article – in all my many year’s on here never have done – so not got a clue so like I say will leave it to DW but will definitely keep commenting in my own inimitable style regularly lol!

Enjoy your Sunday gents – over and out……………. lol!

  • PompeyYid says:

HT….I nominate you to write a TW post, for that matter any dam post, you do put forward good arguments just as EJ does, give it a go mate, I would if I wasn’t so crap at using a keyboard and such a fence sitter lol! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

That’s all cool… It was just a suggestion..

    Have a lovely day yourself…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Hi PY… It’s not my specialised subject mate… 🙂

I’ll write one on the art of goalkeeping with one strong foot, if you like…

  • PompeyYid says:

Hey HT that’ll do mate, comes into any dam post region lol! it could be titled “Long John Silver” and the Treasures of keeping a clean sheet lol! it would give Danny a rest. COYS

  • El Jefe says:

PY appreciate that comment about me making good arguments – glad you see it that way!

No worries HT – cheers for the lovely day comment – hope your’s is going well also and the same to all on here naturally……….!

Just thinking about Saturdays FA Cup debacle. Re Ref decisions etc..
It struck me that looking at Chelsea. With a few injuries, and suspensions, they looked pretty ordinary.
Neither of those two teams really worry me for next season. On that performance.

  • El Jefe says:

    https://www.spurs-web.com/spurs-news/opinion-why-spurs-fans-should-be-thrilled-that-parrott-exit-leaves-kane-as-only-striker/

Further to what I wrote this morning – should we indeed be thrilled with Parrott’s exit and start getting excited about a new striker arrival lol?!

  • El Jefe says:

Hi ND – first of all hope you had a nice Sunday!

Didn’t say it but thought similar and have already argued about this recently on here that Chelski with that defence and the way they conceded this season unless they improve big time there over the summer – I think they are there for the taking as regards that 4th spot next season!

Arse – fair play their 3 attacker’s (though let’s wait and see if Aubameyang stays or actually goes) apart from that, Ceballos is likely off and then then their defence and midfield becomes very average indeed! Not really worried by Arse to be honest even if they have won the FA Cup and beat both Man City and Chelski to do it.

Bring on next season indeed quietly confident especially if we can make some decent signings to tweak the squad properly this summer – here’s hoping anyway and we’ll soon start finding out!

  • Niall D says:

    Hi EJ
Hope you enjoyed Sunday lunch.( Chicken Piri-piri) – lol.
I was also alluding to the fact that one or two injuries+ a dodgy decision, can change things for a team.
EG, We get the pen at The Cherries, Man U don’t get the pogba pen against us and we’re playing CL football. Chelsea had one match like this and it showed and was decisive.
We had half a season of profound injuries and poor ref decisions through out the season.
4 new signings next year the league is ours. Moh hahahaha.

  • El Jefe says:

    Morning ND – LOL!

Sunday lunch was great cheers for asking (piri-piri indeed lol) – it’s called Churrasco standard in North Portugal – the literal translation is barbecue and some even claim it’s standard as grilled/barbecued beef but where my Mum comes from up north the standard is chicken, in Galcia in NW Spain though (where my Dad comes from) the standard is pork!

Anyway enough about food – not even lunchtime yet – too early to start salivating already lol………!

Definitely an extremely difficult season for us this last one no shadow of a doubt whatsoever – hope next season we can come back firing on all fronts and of course agreed – looking for 4 signings also – we all know what we want now – let’s hope the powers that be can get them done ASAP – here’s hoping anyway lol……….!

  • Niall D says:

EJ Thanx for the food lecture. Lol. I really only know tourist Portugal and restaurant Portuguese.
Just a quick message re transfers.
    Troy Deeney NOOOOOOOOOO.

  • Stan Rosenthal says:

Love the banter here. I gather that N’Dombele is definitely staying which could be a game changer (to use an expression that this government is fond of using) if José can get him up to speed and we get the Dane to release him in a more attacking role.

Certainly we will need as many players up for it as possible given the number of extra games we could be playing.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Gedson Fernandes is on loan until the end of next season. And, apart from still having him as an option to eventually buy, in the past year we have purchased Lo Celso, Ndombele, Sessegnon, Bergwijn and Clarke. But, our football went backwards. And, apart from loaning out Clarke, out of the remaining 5 of those players, only Lo Celso has regularly played. And, we have hardly seen the others at all, apart from the odd appearances here and there. That is not really good enough, is it…

The one player (outside of Lo Celso) that I will give the benefit of the doubt to in this, is Ryan. As he was bought as an injured player that was not available to play for a while, from the start. And it wasn’t really likely that he would be instantly integrated into the team, anyway.

So, if we are to buy another 3 or 4 players in this TW, that would amount to 9 or 10 new players at Spurs in just over a year. This to me would have to be seen as almost a complete rebuild of the squad with just a small core of regular, experienced and mature, top class players still in it. In Harry, Hugo, Son, Toby. Then there is Lucas, Sissoko, Aurier, Dier, Sanchez, Winks and Davies that are also well experienced and have been regular starters. There is also Dele to hopefully regain his general fitness and past good form. Then of course, Lamela, who is…. Lamela! Then we have the younger players coming through, in Tanganga, Skipp, (possibly) Foyth and one or two others, with a couple out on loan.

Who is likely to leave from that lot in this TW, I don’t know. But, we can probably kiss goodbye to Rose and KWP…

IMO, whatever the main squad looks like come September, This is still what amounts to me as a rebuild, as opposed to a slight re-jig, if I look beyond just next season. With there also being uncertainty over the likes of Son, Dele, Harry and Hugo +, beyond this coming season. And of course with Toby getting on too…

So, with all of this in mind; Although I can see Spurs as improving with its football overall, this coming season I can’t foresee great strides of the kind of improvement that so many supporters (and Levy) will probably be expecting, wanting. In other words, I can see us looking and being better and hopefully more difficult to beat. But, I can’t really see us improving enough to even get back close to when we were at our peak with Poch and looking like serious title contenders. Not for a good while at least. We may even win a cup soon but surely the longer term re-build is more important to the club, when looking ahead, than just a cup win next year, for instance…

The difficult task that Jose faces with this ongoing rebuild and with a view to the future beyond perhaps the likes of Kane; Will be keeping Levy, the squad and importantly, us supporters all reasonably happy. Happy with our PL position. Happy with our squad. Happy with our cup runs. Happy with the style of football…. Happy, happy happy!

Okay, so our NL rivals won themselves yet another FA cup. But, they finished 8th in the PL. Do you Spurs supporters think this is enough to make you happy? Especially as we would have to wait an entire season for us to see this possibly happen. What about us being kept happy for the entire season? From start to finish? Surely this is where the football itself comes into play, apart from the results. Surely we will want to be much happier with what we are watching on the pitch, on a weekly basis, to be more confident in the team eventually winning something at the end of it all. Scraping by as we have just recently seen doesn’t fill me with hope. But we can’t be that bad again, can we? I actually don’t think so myself but only because it was so so bad…

We could of course win a cup and still finish in the top 4… That would be nice……

But, I won’t really be expecting it, with or without Jose. Not yet… But…

  • Hot Tottingham says:

ND… Apart from it being just media gossip right now. What is wrong with Troy Deeney when it comes to some cover for Kane?

To me he is quite a realistic and safe target when taking everything into consideration. He is a player that for Watford has scored just 1 less PL goal than Son this past season. He will come in knowing he is back-up. Probably happy to make the odd starts and sub appearances and without complaint. (And it is being reported as a loan). He seems to be a very reasonable option to me… If he is indeed an option at all.

He always works his nut off, always reliable and professional, has been an inspirational captain of his team and is highly respected by his managers, team mates and supporters alike…

What are all the realistic alternatives? Who else are the media putting up?

If Jose would like him and if he would like to come… Why not? We can’t afford to put a World Class player on the bench or even on the pitch. And a young inexperienced guy probably won’t be good enough. And we have just put Parrott out on loan, which kind of proves that. Deeney has many years of PL experience, is fit and plays like he loves his football… I like him, even if Jose doesn’t. But, maybe he does. 🙂

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Just as I earlier mentioned that I presumed that Rose will be leaving, he has now said that he would like to remain at Spurs and see out his contract. We’ll see Danny. We might just need you anyway…

  • PompeyYid says:

Hey HT, maybe DR has done some successful Googling lol!

Am with you on Troy Deeney, safe bet who will play for the shirt, fans and his paymasters. COYS

  • Niall D says:

Thanks HT /PY for your assessment on TD. It was a bit of a joke. For me however, just for me I found he had too much power at Watford and I don’t mean on the field. I feel he may be another Kaboul.
Also by many peoples opinion here, and the type of football we want to see played, is he really a Spurs player? For me no. There are players you like and those you don’t. Personally his bluster type of football harks back to the Wimbledon crazy gang. Sorry not for me.

  • El Jefe says:

ND – no worries mate lol – you seem to have very good knowledge from what I’ve read – what do you think of rissois?! Love them myself – beautiful lol! Highly recommended if you haven’t devoured any as of yet in your visits to Portugal/Portuguese restaurants – great starter/snack lol!

Bloody hell HT – 2 great read’s – very thought provoking as usual – not that it’s a surprise though lol!

Hmm – yes with another 3-4 players as several of us are asking for plus the one’s signed last season – that makes for a lot of new integration – great point – time will no doubt be needed as you say – patience will = key, again as you said to me a while back ago during 1 of our chit-chats lol!

Going to leave it there as regards that 1st post of your’s – unlike my normal self going to keep it short and sweet today lol!

As regards the 2nd one on Deeney – bloody hell you do make a compelling argument – shit I’m almost convinced LOL! Indeed if JM wants him so be it – who am I to argue indeed I’ll have to back him up – do you mind if I copy and paste your arguments lol?!

I recently did say on here as regards Rose – that surprises happen and he might even end up staying and see out his contract – and now given so many games possible next season especially including if we go far in the EL – might it be a good idea to keep Rose at LB to compete/cover with Davies while Sessegnon get’s upto speed there also?!

Hmm very interesting to see what happens this summer indeed – let the fun and games begin LOL!

In a great mood today – as I stated on here yesterday to HT, etc about being on the LSE Lloyds board – Lloyds up some 7.5% today at close from the morning low and guess who bought in early this morning LOL?! Whoop, Whoop (although not all profit as I was down around 4.5% in total from a previous deal in Lloyds in July but still made up my losses today and now also 3% back up aswell and all in 1 bloody day)………….!

Also managed to pick up another 100 disposable face masks on Ebay yesterday for £9.98 total including delivery (had done so last week for £14.36 at the time for 100 also) – Boots charging a discounted £75 (from a total of £120) for the same 200 lol! If anyone is interested (it seems they are going to be needed for a long while yet) I can pass the details and save you a long search and even missing out, etc – 3 play, CE certified, seller’s with loads of feedback, etc lol!
