Match Thread – A Dose Of New Year Optimism As Spurs Head Into The NLD

|

Having somewhat narrowly booked our place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a late and tight 3-1 victory over Morecambe last Sunday, it’s back to Premier League action this coming weekend as we welcome North London rivals, Arsenal, to White Hart Lane.

Everyone knows what this game stands for, and means, to both sets of colours, but after the disruption we’ve seen, we have two games in hand on the Gooners and although they sit two places and two points ahead of us, another victory for Antonio Conte boosts us ahead of them, decides the bragging rights, and we’d still have two games in hand on them and West Ham United, who are currently a point ahead.

We might not have the squad most seem to want, and we might not be getting the performances (I guess all of us) want, but as we head into the second half of the season, we continue to be well placed for a decent finish in the league and can more than secure Champions League football again and if we win both of our games in hand, we are breathing down the top three.

Fans know this is a long term rebuild again after Mauricio Pochettino’s peak, and further slow and steady improvement in the next few months should convince Conte his foreseeable future is here – and help Daniel Levy to loosen the purse strings so we can take that next step.

Thanks for the thread Danny. But we do play Chelsea first… Tonight, 7.45pm! πŸ™‚

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Looking forward to the Arsenal match; I think we will win it.

Looking forward to tonights cup match with Chelsea; I think we can still win it and make the final. We’ll have to be bloody good though!

At least give it our best shot. Go for it! And whatever other cliche’s can be applied to a positive effort from Spurs…

I will be optimistic when we rid at least 6 of our current squad; when we sign 3 badly needed new recruits; when we start producing young stars of the future; when our scouting improves; when our miserly chairman stops penny pinching and bargain hunting and when we return to the glory days of entertaining, exciting winning football.

As HT says… first up is chelsea, another game we made difficult to progress to the final (by 2 own goals!). I always try to be positive about spurs wining games and this is a game we need exceptional form and fortitude from the players.

Then again when gooners arrive at our ground, the players must repeat their 110% efforts to get the 3 points. So if we win both games but miss out on the final the 3 points from the gooners will compensate πŸ™‚ COYS

Wentworth, as usual you are spot on, but unfortunately I don’t think we will become truly competitive while Levy remains in post. His ambition seems to be to leave the legacy of his wonderfully expensive stadium, rather than in investing the required capital in the transfer market to become a truly competitive club hunting titles and trophies, as we once were. All we see are bargain buys, speculation and excuses, while Spurs fans pay top ticket prices. We are getting left behind by the likes of Leicester City and even now West Ham, showing what well founded ambition can achieve. How long will it take for Conte to realize he is flogging a dead horse with Lewis and Levy. It doesn’t take a genius to realize we are 4 or 5 players short, we have never replaced Eriksen or Trippier, or addressed the need for striker cover, the need to sort out the GK cover for Lloris of he in fact stays, we still need a midfield gaffer, as well as clearing out the likes of Doherty, Ndombele a disastrous buy, and I’m afraid Dele Ali who has gone backwards. We are as usual dithering while several PL are striving to improve.

  • Niall D says:

Well I’m with HT on this,
I think we should go for it, I still feel that whilst Chelsea were the better team last week, however their goals were pretty fortunate and thanks to our capitulation they are in a very strong position in this game requiring anything from a draw to a, 1-0 defeat and still get thru.
But we do have the capability to beat them.
Re our squad, I honestly thought we had a good deal of the clear out started over the summer with Rose, Aurier, Sissoko, and to a degree Verts and Ericsson.
I don’t think we need 10 out, but we do need to freshen the squad.
But we have a good enough first 11 to cancel out Chelsea tonite COYS.

  • 123spurs says:

Tonight the 1st goal will tell how the game will go. Arsenal will beat us if we are not prepread to fight and stop the silly errors which the players are prone to. With games in hand top4 is in within pure grasp.

  • PompeyYid says:

Am up for a 3-0 win for us tonight, wake me up if I am dreaming, lol! nah! I think we can do it.

    NLD, 2-1 Spurs.

Now for some questions, am not Jod using a psuedanime by the way lol!….

Who do we need to move on?
Me its… N’Dombele, Dele, LoCelso, Doh and Kane for the now.

    Can the above be replaced?

    Who by?
    Names if possible!

Would the suggested named players sign for us?
Reasons why or why not please!

Basically are we attractive enough at the mo to get A1 target players to sign for us?

Do we go more for say exp’ PL players just to improve what we are at the mo?

    Once say we are improved!
Do you think we would stand more of a chance signing standouts?

Finally should we be looking for more of the “they have a future type player” ?

My opinion is sign Lingard and Traore start to build, ok these are not the future but they might just give us a bit more umph! if only in the short term! COYS

  • Hot Tottingham says:

All players, can all be replaced, PY. πŸ™‚

I haven’t much of a clue who should stay or go… Although I beleive that Ndombele really should go if it’s true that he and his family just don’t like living in London. An unhappy player is probably not a good player to keep… And if Dele isn’t at all favoured by Conte, then he should also leave and make a go of it elsewhere. But I still hope that he can stay and improve. asap… I’m still hoping that Harry Kane goes but preferbably not until the summer. But to buy an attacker now would be a good idea. Who? I don’t know!

I think Lo Celso and Doherty will probably remain for now. Who knows?!

You are obviously presuming that all the talk of Spurs’ interest in Traore and Lingard is genuine. Well I am hoping that it’s not. I think we already have ‘as good as’ or better in their roles. But Conte will know better, I’m sure… πŸ™‚

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    Tonights line-up?

    Lloris
    Tanganga Sanchez Davies
    Royal Winks Dele Skipp Reguillon
    Lo Celso
    Kane

    3-5-1-1?

  • 123spurs says:

We need players who will put in the effort, be consistant in getting a matching rating of 7-8 out of 10, on a regular basis, not just 1 in 5 games, we seen to have a lot of these players with low ratings all at the same time in the same game.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

Starting XI: Gollini, Royal, Tanganga, Sanchez, Davies, Doherty, Hojbjerg, Winks, Lucas, Lo Celso, Kane (c).

Substitutes: Lloris, Paskotsi, Rodon, Sessegnon, Skipp, White, Dele, Bryan, Scarlett.

  • 123spurs says:

No chance with this line up.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

    There’s always a chance…

Even though the starting 11 is not the one that I predicted; The only real surprise for me in Conte’s team, is starting Gollini and not Hugo…

  • 123spurs says:

Need to add a new no.2 keeper to the list, and yet again a set piece you guessed it. Putting cheleas under little to no pressure.

    • DoncasterHotspur says:

No joke and no knee jerk reaction because I knew we would get hammered tonight but there is not one player out there that I would keep. They are playing with such an inferiority complex. Just look at their faces. They were beaten before they walked on the pitch. It’s like watching a premier league team against a League One team. How long before Conte looks for a way out.

  • 123spurs says:

    Men against boys

  • 123spurs says:

    Tanganga is a total liability.

  • 123spurs says:

    No leadership on the pitch

  • Danny Winter says:

HT – I completely forgot about tonight. Seems Spurs did as well sadly.

  • 123spurs says:

If these players can’t be bothered to play for conte. I wouldn’t blame him for leaving.
