Reports in The Sun today claim that Manchester United have increased their bid from the original £10million offer to £14.2million.

Sir Alex Ferguson is known to be keen on strengthening his midfield after never fully replacing Roy Keane. There are also doubts over the persistent injuries for Paul Scholes. Ferguson has apparently targeted Spurs and England holding midfielder Carrick and the latest bid is said to be closer to Martin Jol’s valuation of the player, however Martin Jol said recently that Carrick is not for sale, so I’m not sure he’d have such a valuation anyway?

At the moment this is all press talk and the majority of Spurs fans hope it stays this way. Unless we get any news from the official site to the contrary, Carrick will return from the World Cup a Lilywhite.

Martin Jol said recently: “We do not want to lose a player like Michael Carrick. He was probably our best midfield player this season, so why should we sell him? ….Michael has got a contract for another two years, so that is the situation. He owes this club and he is happy here.”
