Tottenham Hotspur desperately needed the performance and result we put in on Tuesday evening as we hosted Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League at White Hart Lane.

A brace for Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min, along with a solo effort from Erik Lamela gave us the comfortable victory on the night and it went some way to erasing the memories of recent results against Bayern Munich and Brighton and Hove Albion, but the question on everyone’s lips in the aftermath of the match is simply – was that the start of the corner being turned, or simply an angry (or lucky) aberration?

With plenty of struggles in the year of 2019, despite our journey to the CL final, we needed something to go for us, but we simply have to build on this now as we have again shown what we are capable of and we just haven’t seen it enough.

Liverpool will be tough on Sunday, especially at Anfield and we all know what the game means without taking a trip back to the summer, so the perfect way to build on Tuesday is by taking some revenge and hopefully, doing it in some style when it comes to the performance.

The question is simple – will we?

  • The reality is that any team going to Anfield at the moment can expect little return. The result for Spurs doesn’t matter, but the performance does. As long as they give a good account of themselves and show some endeavour supporters can be proud. It’s a one-off game of football and so a win or draw is by no means impossible.

  • We just needed a win against Red Star, and we got it, but let’s not kid ourselves that they were anything but a second-tier club, with an away record in Europe to rival ours in the PL – in other words terrible! Liverpool will be a completely different kettle of fish, and much will depend on Pochettino, who’s been far too negative in games against theoretically weaker teams like Watford and Brighton, but might just be too gung-ho against the Scousers. A nice balanced team selection would help (if he’s capable of making one, of course).

  • 100% commitment is needed here. If we do what we have been doing lately we will get smashed.

Another defeat here we are very close to the bottom 3 on points.

So I don’t agree the result doesn’t matter. That is a losers mentality. We need a win and we need it bad. An ugly win or draw is more important at this time.

  • Yes.. we need points from this game at Anfield. I can see a 4231 shape attacking.. and I noticed on tuesday night, a 442 when defending. We need to hit them on the breakaway with the speed of passing and sonny’s HK10 Dele finishing of chances. Davies did a lot better than rose, so as we are against Salah, should be retained at LB.

SO basically the same team as v Red Star would be ok, but expect toby in for sanchez. COYS

  • b108s….that’s the conundrum Poch faces, do he play Toby, totally experienced but slow, as has been proven over the last few weeks or do he play Sanchez, relatively inexperienced, though a full international, but quick paced, remember both will be up against Mo-Salah and Maine, so for me which ever way Poch goes I will back him.

Am going for a score draw on Sunday. COYS

  • TQ – we sold him for peanuts but will get 50% of future sale – his release clause is around 15m Euros from what I heard back in the summer.

  • Stab in the dark:

Gazza, Foyth, Toby, Verts, Davies, Sissoko, N’Dombele, Lamela, Alli, Son, Kane.

Want Foyth to replace Aurier desperately and think Davies deserves to keep his place and hopefully with some sound defensive style full-backs we can re-introduce the much experienced Toby to partner Verts and hope that THAT experience will shine through on the day. That said I would not be at all surprised if Sanchez kept his spot given his pace and having to deal with Salah and Mane’s pace. Sissoko, N’Dombele picks itself for me – box to box with sound industry and athleticism in abundance – Lamela and Alli deserve their spots and Sonny and HK10 are 1st names down on the list.

  • Most of the football world will think Spurs successful if the match end in a draw. After our form for calendar 2019, I’d feel positive about a well played draw.

  • TK…. a draw will be acceptable…If spurs win, I can visualise you doing a little Brazilian samba dance around the room 🙂 I will also be celebrating in similar fashion if spurs players / poch achieve that result….

  • I think we will all be joining you if we get a win block 108 🙂

A draw would indeed be a good result, if we play with the same intensity and passion we showed on Tuesday we have a chance but the biggest problem is going to be defending against their front three. If we can avoid conceding in their usual onslaught from kick off and hang in there until they run out of steam, which they usually do in the second half, then we have every chance with Sonny and HK10 in good form and Dele getting back to somewhere near his best.

  • Ok, so I’ll admit I’ve felt a little gloomier in light of recent results, but come on guys… Don’t start selling a draw before kick off!

Of course it’s not easy, but at some point we have to turn the corner. This could be a good game to give Sessegnon a run out from the bench.

I’m going for a rip-rawring 4-2 to Tottenham, with another brace a piece for Kane and Son and total meltdown by Klopp from. the sidelines

    COYS!

  • If we play like we have so far this season we will get a serious hammering on Sunday. I don’t think the Red Star game means anything – they were a really poor side who made things really easy for us. Despite that we conceded way too much space to them, especially on the wings. If the players think they have turned a corner after Tuesday, they will be in for a rude awakening on Sunday.
It is a game that we need to play with maximum intensity for the entire 90 minutes. The Bayern game (and all the Opta statistics) show that we have only got half an hour of intensity in us.
I’m hoping for a positive result on Sunday but I expect we will be soundly thrashed.

  • DH…..love the confidence in the mighty Spurs. lol!

My confidence is that on Sunday “you never know, maybe just maybe, you just do not know” that is what is great about the sport we all love and the team we support. COYS

  • I hope we don’t get caught out trying to play from the back All the time. As Hod said on Wednesday nite sometimes you just need to lump it up the pitch. Liverpool have a high press so we could get caught out. However we do have what it takes to get a result. Let’s hope we spring board from the Red Star game and don’t forget Red Star beat Liverpool last season. And ManU took away something last week. ????

  • I’m not talking up a draw v Liverpool. Just the old adage if you can’t win don’t lose.

As long as we keep our clean sheet from the start…the longer we go into the game…. the better our confidence, and players heads are held high, not dropped like in the CL Final and subsequent games. As we have fast players and can move the ball quickly, will match liverpool players who will be on the front foot at home stadium. Poch will have seen the Man utd v Liverpool video so will have planned tactical shape. I think the old 4231 will serve us well in games from now on. (if it aint broke dont fix it)

So lets see spurs MF / CD hold firm, with gazza on top form, HK10 & fwds get a 3 points result… and revenge on the reds.. COYS

  • What a result by Leicester – we’ve got a lot of catching upto do from the looks of things and it don’t get any harder than Sunday. Just hoping for a good performance and all 11 to put in a shift and not anyone go missing ruining the team effort – then hopefully we can pull some kind of result and build some momentum.

  • SR – I would like to see more of Moura – a pro-longed period of him, Sonny and HK10 in a 3 pronged attack a la Liverpool with Mane, Salah and Firmino, problem is Lamela has done well this season and deserves his place also. In CM I would have an ACM namely Alli/Lo Celso/Eriksen and then go with Sissoko and N’Dombele in a double pivot (Winksy on the bench to cover for the pair). Want to see Foyth and Sessegnon as our regular FB’s also – does anybody else agree?! It’s not like Aurier/KWP and Rose/Davies are that much competition so why not try them out, we maybe pleasantly surprised even if they are very in-experienced.
