Ledley King insists Spurs do not need trophies to be a success

Former Tottenham captain Ledley King has claimed that Spurs don’t need to win silverware to judge their progression as a club.

Speaking to PA via The Independent, the retired centre-back said that although every player wants to win trophies, it shouldn’t be used to gauge just how well a team is doing in the grand scheme of things.

Tottenham came close to winning their first trophy in over a decade when Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it to the Champions League final. However, Spurs were easily beaten 2-0 by Liverpool.

King, who was at Tottenham for his entire career, only managed one trophy in his 14 years at the club in the form of the 2007/08 League Cup, a game in which the former centre-back started in as Spurs beat Chelsea in extra-time to lift their only piece of silverware in the 21st century.

The former Spurs defender said when asked if winning trophies is important: “No, it is important just to improve. We all want to win trophies, every team wants to win trophies, but it is not a given. It is very difficult and no one has a given right to win anything.

“The team will be trying to compete on all fronts to win anything, but I don’t think you can judge the season on not winning a trophy.

“We will be able to look at the season as a whole and see what we have done. Last season was great for the club but we didn’t win a trophy, so I don’t think it can be judged like that.

“We all realise how difficult it is to win trophies at the moment – Manchester City won three last year, so the competition is very tough. The players want to improve and they will be looking to try and compete and, until they are out of a potential title race, they will believe they can be right up there amongst it.”
