Latest Departure Speculation Sends Some Spurs Fans Into Meltdown – “State Of This Club”

|

Following the departure of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid earlier in the transfer window, it’s been claimed this week that injured Serge Aurier could be the next to depart with strong interest in him coming from the French Ligue 1.

The ‘exclusive’ comes from The Sun and I’m not so sure why it’s an exclusive as it’s long been rumoured this summer that the 26-year-old featured on the list manager Mauricio Pochettino wanted to see sold on to secure him more funds for a rebuild.

His injury record and the fact he only featured 17 times in 2018/19, it wouldn’t be a great surprise if he left if we could command a suitable fee, but the speculation coming this late in the window – along with the Sun suggesting that Kyle Walker-Peters could be on his way on a loan spell – just seems strange timing.

Moreso, the Sun suggest that rather having a target in mind (given other speculation linking us with Youcef Atal) we would simply look to the loan market to provide cover until Juan Foyth returns from injury.

Given the specifics of the report I can understand the concern, but I’m not taking it as gospel even if we would sell Aurier this late on in the window. Makes more sense that we have someone else lined up and are just getting our ducks in a row – if it’s to be believed at all, but given the stick Aurier takes, it seems a strange reaction in any event.
