Just How Typical Would That Be?

Spurs chase for a Champions League spot could be dealt a hammer blow by local and fierce rivals Arsenal.

It is a natural reflex for Spurs fans to want the Gunners to do badly, but this season we have even more reason to want Arsenal knocked out of the Champions League competition because Uefa have confirmed Martin Jol’s worst fears and said if Arsenal win the Champions League, they will gain entry to next seasons competition at the expense of whoever finishes fourth in the league. I don’t need to remind anyone on this site who lye in fourth.

I could come out with a Kevin and Perry esq ‘it’s soooo unfair’ now, but will try to use my gentlemanly refrain, especially as Barcelona look the class side of this years competition. However having despatched Barcelona – without a single English player I might add – Arsenal can’t be dismissed.

A UEFA spokesman confirmed: ?We changed the rules last summer after Liverpool won the Champions League. So if Arsenal won the Champions League, they would go directly into the group stages next season. The fourth-placed English team would, instead, go into the UEFA Cup.?
