Tottenham target £20m player who Jurgen Klopp once labelled “outstanding”

|

Tottenham could complete their transfer business ahead of the summer this year, with the club reportedly setting its sights on Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren, according to TEAMtalk.

We could face a challenge for his signature, however, as rivals Arsenal, as well as Crystal Palace and West Ham, are also believed to be interested in taking him away from Merseyside.

The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour of Jurgen Klopp this season due to the form of Joel Matip and the emergence of Joe Gomez, with the pair both yet to be defeated in the league this season.

Lovren has featured in nine league games this season, one of which was the 3-0 defeat to Watford, which may mean that the Reds are open to selling the defender, whom they signed for £20m in 2014.

Is the club making a mistake by targeting Dejan Lovren?

Yes

No

A lot of Spurs fans reacted with scepticism to the news of the club’s interest, but it is worth remembering that we face the possibility of losing an experienced defender in Jan Vertognhen this summer, and therefore replacing him with a player of similar stature could be a worthwhile move.

In fact, Lovren gets quite an unfair reputation. There is a reason he has played for Liverpool – and Jurgen Klopp – for several years, with the German boss once stating that the Croatia international is “outstanding” 90% of the time.

Lovren was also a key cog in the Croatia side that made the World Cup final in 2018, which demonstrates his pedigree, and shows that he could be a useful option for Jose Mourinho.

With Japhet Tanganga breaking through Lovren could be the ideal role model for the youngster to learn from, and considering he has just over a year left on his contract he could be available for a cut-price deal, possibly allowing room for other defenders to be brought in.
