After Monday night’s emphatic 3-1 defeat of Portsmouth Martin Jol has stated that his target for the season is to finish 6th.

‘Finishing sixth will be a happy ending for me,’ said Jol.

‘We are in fourth spot but Chelsea, who are one on their own, Liverpool, who don’t lose matches now, and Manchester United are in front of us. So it will be a battle.

‘There are also teams like Arsenal who are top sides and so it is going to be a battle.’

‘We are not far off second place now but I don’t know if we can do that. We came back to get the points against Portsmouth just like we did against Sunderland last week but this time the penalty was a success for us.

‘I know we are going to score. There is only one league match this season in which we haven’t scored and that was at Bolton where they refused to give us a regular goal.’

His statement is incorrect since we failed to score against Chelsea and Blackburn.

I think MJ is setting his sights slightly lower than most fans expectations because he doesn’t want the players to get carried away chasing a high place and falter at the last hurdle.

I think a realistic prediction would be 4th or 5th considering the form we are in at the moment.
