Manager Martin Jol defended his England international striker Jermain Defoe after the hitman showed his frustration at not playing a part in yesterday`s 3-2 win over Blackburn Rovers at the Lane.

Defoe had been warming up as a substitute, and with a minute to go was apparantly informed he would not be thrown into the fray. With that Defoe headed straight down the tunnel.

Jol understands Defoe`s reaction and claimed ‘The game was finished, what do you expect him to do, come out and wave from the halfway line?’

However it seems that the Dutchman prefers a little and large combination up front with Mido and Robbie Keane currently occupying the striking positions and they repaid Jol by scoring the goals to secure victory over Rovers.

Keane`s two goal salvo yesterday should see him get the nod over Defoe for next Saturday`s encounter at Chelsea.

However in this, of all seasons, Defoe needs a run in the Spurs side with a doubt over his place in the England World Cup squad this coming summer. Yesterday`s behaviour showed that his frustration is close to the surface.
