It’s Spurs, It’s Summer – That Means It’s Time For Silly Season

|

Well, it turned into quite a fantastic season for Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur with the club battling back from some major disappointments to semi-comfortably seize fourth place and a Champions League spot, taking north London bragging rights over Arsenal who finished two points below us.

With the 2021/22 campaign now at a close, it is a big summer for Conte as he looks to continue reshaping his first team squad into a far more drilled and consistent outfit for the coming 2022/23 campaign, and the quick and early signing of experienced 33-year-old, Ivan Perisic, it certainly looks like Daniel Levy is going to back him and managing director Fabio Paratici in our search for further success.

With plenty of tasty links circulating in the media, it will be interesting to see who comes in next as there are a few key positions we still need to strengthen in, but if Perisic is anything to go by, it could well be an interesting couple of months ahead for fans.

German striker Jurgen Klinsmann spent two years at White Hart Lane in separate spells, but how many league goals did he contribute?

    THE SILLY SEASON
    (A supporter’s lament)

Football writers clutch their pens and imagination flies,
Across those pristine pages with their half-truths and their lies,
    The facts are immaterial and harmful to their cause;
They need to sell their offering for monetary reward.

And avidly perusing all the articles they cede,
Supporters from across the land are victims of their greed,
A world-class star is coming; is it true or is it false?
The fact is no-one really knows each story’s baffling course.

But it might be true we like to think, as dreams of glories past,
Fuel all of those eternal hopes to which we hold on fast,
The Champions League is waiting; are we ready for the test?
The answer’s in the boardroom, not the gossip columns text.

Forget about those pundits with the rubbish they espouse,
And send your scouts out yonder for they surely have more nous,
There’s another Sonshine waiting, for a cockerel on his chest,
You only need to find him, and then he will do the rest.

The Tottenham Hotspur mantra is not just a worthless phrase,
That sits high above a stadium where the finest football’s played,
So let’s look toward the future and let’s give the fans their due,
And acknowledge, Boardroom members, if we dare then we can do!

Basically every club is linked to every player on the planet. In our case you can cut some of it out pretty quickly. If we are linked to a central defender if he’s right footed forget it. If we are linked to full backs remember we play with wing backs and it isn’t the same position. With the mythical understudy to Kane there’s a difference between a striker and someone who is actually a centre forward. If we sign someone who is just a striker he has to at least be better up front than Son playing out of position (and he’s pretty good).

Some of it is harder to work out. We play with a two man midfield. Next season we will have Bentacur, Hojbjerg and Skipp. Assuming Winks is gone and we need two players for each position then that means we need one more. But are we looking for the same kind of midfielder or something a bit different ? Without knowing that you can throw all sorts of names into the mix. With the wing backs we have signed Perisic which presumably means Sessegnon or Reguilon is surplus to requirements (the betting seems to be Reguilon). But if you can’t unload the spare player what effect does that have on you transfer budget ? The what ifs at this stage can give you a headache, it’ll pesumably become clearer as the window goes on and deals are done and players sold or loaned out.

  • Hot Tottingham says:

I think the beauty with Perisic is that he is a very versatile player. He can play across the midfield, left to right. He is also very capable in a central attacking role.

He may well play predominately as a left wing-back but could also play in the right wing-back role as well.

He is very much a two-footed player and this will play a big part in his versatility and flexibility to work well in Conte’s squad.

This TW looks like being totally different than any previous ones we have seen with levy in control… It’s good we have new manager / dof that has the energy and ability that proves to Enic / thfc they can do what is needed to bring spurs back to challenge for title and cups, and actually win something 🙂

The new regs. on financial position of clubs like players wage cap etc. should help at long last to even the level of mega rich owners buying best players every year and driving their business plans through the loopholes of last yrs. regs.

    Geof nice post there

  • Geofspurs says:

B108 …. I agree. The TW does have a different feel about it. There’s a sense that things will happen a little earlier this time. Let’s hope so, anyway.

block 108 spurs – I wouldn’t bank on any rules levelling the playing field. City’s high price lawyers have already seen EUFA off once over FFP, I’ve no doubt they could do it again, assuming EUFA still have the appetite to take them on.

We are going to buy players to fit the system. Competitive for places. Not buying flavour of the month types. Lets get this party started. Coys

  • Niall D says:

    Hi folks
It’s good to see us doing at least some of our business early, I hope it continues, as has been said, this window has a different “feel” about it and for a change I’m a bit more positive as to where and how any monies we may have is being targeted, that is the right sort of player, regardless of age, with the right credentials to do a job for our team.
It’s not Christmas, we won’t get all of our wish list, but I do see the players we have signed so far, including January past as a vast improvement.
We also need a bit of focus on who’s leaving, and get the right people out as well.
It’s just a case “yet again” as has been said of wading thru the quagmire of false media claims and speculation to fill back pages.

  • wentworth says:

Hopefully we have learnt a lesson buying the likes of Bergwijn, N’Dombele and Lo Celso who have failed dismally in the Prem. We are taking a loss on all 3 but we must still get them off our books.
Looks as though Perisic is a good buy, strong and versatile. Winks should go and maybe Rodon. So we have money coming in.
More shrewd buys please to fit our system. Lots of optimism.

  • Niall D says:

Theres no thumbsup on this part of the site WW but 100% post m8 👍

  • jod says:

The thing about buying players that fit the system is its great as long as you keep the same manager. If he leaves then suddenly you can find you suddenly have a squad that doesn’t fit the new manager’s system. With Conte’s history that means I’m always going to be nervous.

One surprising thing is Conte’s comments on transfers actually echo Sam Allardyce’s. I can remember when Allardyce was still at Bolton he said he spent more time assessing a players character than his ability. Conte has said it doesn’t matter how good a player is if he doesn’t have the right attitude. Its not something Pochettino seemed to focus on or he’d never have signed N’Dombele.

  • Allan says:

I don’t think I will be switching on to view the latest silly suggestions
How much do these experts ? who make these predictions get paid for nonsense ?
I think we are working to get a creditable side for next season but let’s wait till moves are agreed !

  • Niall D says:

    Well let me see
Conte is looking for the right player to suit him and maybe perhaps his system.
But maybe, maybe players like Persic, Kane, Sonny, Bentancour, etc have played to a relative successful rate under other managers, so I don’t accept that theory.
But with Jods application, let’s just buy any dick who has scored a goal or two doesn’t matter if he fits in a system or not or indeed whether the “current and incumbent” manager rates him
Oops wait a minute, isn’t that what Levey done, for a few years, look where that got us.
Funnily enough it ain’t as caustic as this on the forum, or as negative..

  • jod says:

Niall D – I didn’t say we had an option. Simply that in an ideal world you want a manager who is going to be there for a long time, like Guardiola and Klopp. Unfortunately history says we don’t have that.

  • Niall D says:

    Take your point Jod
Unlike you, I’ll agree there is an argument for your point of view.
However for me Conte is our manager, and it’s his selection, he has has relative success, so to have him pick the players we need to for me makes common sense.
For me we can’t say don’t buy him incase Conte, won’t be here in 2024.
We have to have some transfer strategy, and to employ players who can do the job now for me makes, sense, whilst I under stand future prospects, how often has that fell flat for us lately.

  • PompeyYid says:

For me Conte’s purchases have done us proud and will next season, his get rid of are yes n no at the mo.

For me though I have loads of opinions right n wrong, its lets just wait n see, hopefully we will be even more pleasantly surprised. COYS

  • block 108 spurs says:

IMO…It would be fair to say… top quality players have the ability to adapt to different tactical formations the club manager chooses. There would be the odd players who cant but the majority can and will be less likely to be part of a mass clear out when one top manager leaves and another one arrives.

Spurs current (recently) “dead wood” are players who were bought badly and can’t adapt to PL levels of physical mental / tactical pressures. (or assessed to be so..for example spurs let go 13 young academy players last week)Top quality players are more used to pressure and a demanding manager like poch / jose / conte… players like HK10 / sonny kulu / bentacur etc. As most top managers have basically the same mode of working, and clubs owners / fans all want their teams to be a cup / league silverware wining and CL quality, no matter what country they are located in. It all comes down to money clubs have from operating profits and owners willing to input. COYS

  • Niall D says:

    Good call B108.
    Said as much muself earlier.

  • block 108 spurs says:

Niall…. Yes its obvious what we say, as any fair minded spurs fan should agree.. Now where s that tin hat?? lol

  • Niall D says:

B 108 you should come to the forum chum a much nicer place to be. 👷‍♂️
