“It’s Only One Game” – Pochettino Pleased With Spurs Win But Not Getting Carried Away Yet

Tottenham Hotspur drew a line under our recent poor form as we took a point from Watford last weekend, but nobody would say it was a great performance. Earlier this evening we welcomed Red Star Belgrade to White Hart Lane for our Champions League Group B encounter and fans were certainly hoping for a more vintage performance to restore some confidence and hopefully, see us get back on track.

Get back on track we did. That was far more like it, but everyone will have their own ‘can do better’ issues with the 90 minutes, but after the last few weeks we’ve had taking the lead 9 minutes in and then seeing Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Erik Lamela get on the scoresheet in a game we largely dominated should do wonders for everyone.

A night to restore hope – now we see if we kick on.

Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, manager Mauricio Pochettino explained.

“I don’t feel great, I feel OK. It’s only one game, but of course we need to build our confidence and we have to start at some point. So it’s great for the confidence and tomorrow a day off because we scored five goals! In football we try to find a reason from nowhere. The problem was on the pitch and that is all. It’s normal to see problems on the pitch, and you try to find a way to spark the team. But things happen in football you can’t explain. It is so difficult and complex to explain. The most important thing is to be together and be calm and know that this type of thing can happen in any team. It is most import to show togetherness. If you do not win, the reason is because you are not performing on the pitch, not something that happens outside of the pitch.”

He added.

“My theory is we started late in our preparation. We used pre-season not just to settle our principles of play and build fitness, but also to build a dynamic of the group and I believe that was affected because we started so late. During competition to get that dynamic right is so difficult because the competition does not wait for you. The most important thing is to stay calm and believe.”
