“It Was Impossible” – Pochettino Reflects On Liverpool Defeat But He’s Convinced Spurs Are Committed

|

Tottenham Hotspur picked up a confidence boosting (and much needed) 5-0 victory over Red Star Belgrade in our midweek Champions League clash, and we went into Sunday’s difficult Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield with some renewed hope.

Spurs unexpectedly had the lead 60 seconds into the game as Harry Kane capitalised on a saved Son Heung-Min effort to give us the advantage, but Liverpool were quickly dominating the ball and the chances on the day and we had to be thankful for Paulo Gazzaniga’s display between the sticks.

Their leveller came shortly after the half time restart and then Serge Aurier conceded a penalty with 15 minutes remaining in the tie and Mo Salah made no mistake and 2-1 was how it finished.

Plenty to talk about and plenty of additional questions when it came to our performance and that of individuals.

Speaking to the BBC following the full time whistle, manager Mauricio Pochettino said of the game.

“We were very competitive. I think we suffered in the first half – they were better than us. I think we defended well and the team was very committed. I don’t think it is the belief. We have the belief and the confidence. We need to dominate the game more and play better with the players we had on the pitch.”

Poch refused to be drawn on the award of the penalty

“We tried in the last 10 or 15 minutes and had chances but it was impossible. I’ve got no complaints about the penalty. You can have your own opinion. It was a fair reaction.”
