Christian Eriksen was hailed by supporters on social media for his important contribution against Brighton & Hove Albion in midweek. The midfielder scored a late winner to ensure Tottenham picked up all three points and boosted their hopes of a top-four finish.
Eriksen wasn’t at his best on Tuesday evening, but he produced a piece of brilliance that has Spurs in pole position to secure Champions League football for next season. Against Brighton, he played a full 90 minutes, made 121 touches and 98 passes with 81% accuracy.
The 27-year-old created one chance, had seven shots with 29% hitting the target, made one successful dribble, whipped in six crosses with 17% accuracy and won one aerial duel. Eriksen has averaged a Premier League goal or assist every 132 minutes this season and was praised for bagging the match-winner.
Moment of brilliance from Eriksen. What a strike. Needed something special to break down that resilient #bhafc defence. #thfc

Although he hasn’t been in top form that should never underestimate what a important player he is to our club.#THFC #COYS pic.twitter.com/VXwa93NPr7

Christian Eriksen cops some flak at times, but he produces so, so many magical moments and has been run into the ground physically.
The task for this summer is to a) keep him and b) reduce the weight of responsibility on him.

Such a relief. Even if those two points don’t end up being important, the momentum that the goal brings will be. Eriksen had had a poor match up until that point but he is so wonderfully talented and that was a beautifully pure strike to watch.

He’s this, he’s that, blah blah blah. Christian Eriksen is arguably #thfc most gifted footballer and has to here next season if we want to progress. pic.twitter.com/tMhcJQhWhA

He’s not been at his very best this season and he has his off days like every player, but Christian Eriksen is simply irreplaceable to Pochettino’s Tottenham. #THFC #COYS #TOTBHA

The Danish international’s future remains uncertain, however. Mauricio Pochettino revealed his desire to restart contract talks with Eriksen, but an exit still looks on the cards this summer due to the lack of progress being made. Since his 2013-move from Ajax, the midfielder has scored 65 goals and made 86 assists in 271 appearances in all competitions. His contract expires in 2020.
