Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Pascal Chimbonda has given his thoughts on the ongoing Toby Alderweireld speculation recently, and he doesn’t believe that fans should actually be worrying about whether or not he’ll be with us next season – he thinks he will be.

“I Don’t Think He’s Backed Into A Corner” – Former Spurs Striker Believes Levy Holds All The Card When It Comes To 30 y/o

The speculation about Alderweireld has been rife since January when it became known for sure that his 12 month option carried with it a £25million release fee and I’m pretty sure the only club he hasn’t been linked with since has been Melchester Rovers.

With the more recent pivot on the rumour mill being Serie A side Roma and claims that Daniel Levy would/has/is meeting with Franco Baldini to negotiate the price amidst claims that Toby’s agents have already agreed personal terms with the club, time is running out before the release clause expires and you certainly can’t see Levy allowing the price to be negotiated down.

For Chimbonda, he doesn’t believe that money is the motivating factor for the 30-year-old centre-half so he questions whether Roma would be the step up Toby is looking for at this point in his career.

“Alderweireld will only leave Tottenham for one of Europe’s elite clubs. There seems to be a wage issue between him and the club, but as a player you also want to be playing at the highest level and I can’t see him taking a step backwards to earn more. Some players are happy to take a step back for a higher wage package but Alderweireld doesn’t seem to be a player with that mentality. I’m confident that he will be playing in a Tottenham shirt next season and he will feel confident that Tottenham can deliver a trophy. If Tottenham can keep hold of Alderweireld, then they won’t have to sign any defenders this summer transfer window.”

It’s a fair point, as is simply why would Toby take a move now when next summer his options increase ten fold easily if money is the only factor.

  • It is a strange one this, if reports of the supposed agreement that has been reached with Roma on personal terms is anywhere near accurate he wouldn’t be earning any more than he has been, and a lot less than he might do if he signed a new contract to stay with us. If true he must be going for the weather in Italy and a new challenge. If a part exchange with Zaniolo is true I’ll take that as we already have adequate cover for Toby’s position.

    • That’s why I doubt it and being so blase about talks with his agent, surely that more than qualifies as tapping up as well? There’s no way Roma can out pay us and probably most PL sides. It’s a really weird one for me, not least, because with no disrespect meant to Roma – if he leaves us surely Toby can do better?

  • It wasn’t tongue in cheek when I suggested he may be attracted by the weather and lifestyle in Rome Danny, got to be better than Manchester if you are not the greedy type! 🙂
