A lot has been said about the way AVB set about the task of developing a squad capable of breaking the top 4 stranglehold.

We’ll never know now the full reasons behind his departure, or whether given more time/money/influence he would have been ultimately successful. Things are never black and white are they? He did get a record points haul but failed to win the hearts and minds of the fans, club management and I think in the end the players too.

Its water under the bridge and a new day has dawned with the coming of the Pochettino era but can we already see similarities in the two approaches? Maybe not in the absurdly high line, but with the deployment of two holding midfielders and one striker. Do you remember the prolonged debates we had about the inversion of wingers? Does the floating 4 have echoes of that?

Clearly there will be differences of emphasis and how well Mr P inculcates his ideas to the squad. Then there is the question of horses for courses. Is there a ‘best eleven’ to be deployed for crunch games and cup finals, injuries permitting, or different set-ups with different personnel for different circumstances?

For quite a long time I thought that AVB was going to come good. Whilst the football was beautiful at times under Harry, results against the top teams were poor and eventually the bus parkers found ways of having us over. To his credit, AVB changed that to in his first season a large extent; we became hard to beat and our away record was tremendous.

Unfortunately we then seemed unable to get any fluency at home and the rest is history. So what advice do you give Mr P? Play the same Spurs way home and away or deploy different systems and personnel? Is Bentaleb better than Dembele in either scenario? Will Paulinho get us more goals on the counter attack away from home? Is Lennon more disciplined than Lamela. Who helps us rescue the lost cause or batten down the hatches to see out the last 10 minutes?

Are any of these considerations pertinent in who to buy and who to sell? Put yourself in his shoes and indulge in a little punditry, home and away.
