“Let’s see” – Gary Lineker gives his verdict on recent Tottenham development

|

Tottenham have caused a bit of uproar this week by placing staff on furlough, and former player Gary Lineker is an example of someone who opposes the action.

Daniel Levy confirmed that all non-playing staff would be receiving a reduction in wages, including himself and other directors, totalling 550 staff.

It is a big adjustment that should help with budget expenditure, but it is a little puzzling that those who haven’t been affected at all are the biggest cost burden on the club – the players.

Other Premier League teams have adopted similar strategies, but since Leeds players and management have deferred their wages that is an option we should have looked at first.

Was the club wrong to place staff on furlough?

Yes

No

It is possible Lineker agrees with that position, as he certainly doesn’t support the action taken by the board, which impacts the most vulnerable at Spurs.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s World at One, the Match of the Day presenter said:

“The way Tottenham have handled it I don’t think has been very good – what they are doing to their staff I don’t agree with whatsoever.

“But that is a separate issue to what the players do. It’s the club that has said that the players are going to carry on with their wages, but let’s see how the players react to it.”

It would seem that Lineker holds out some hope that the players will take an ethical standpoint and do their bit to help out others associated with the club, some of whom they interact with on a daily basis.

Toby Alderweireld’s donation of tablets to those in need is a shining light to come out of this difficult situation, and shows our players do care about supporters.

It would be brilliant to see a wage donation initiative set-up, possibly spearheaded by our captain Hugo Lloris or key players like Harry Kane – who is England captain after all.

It wouldn’t just help those associated with Spurs, but perhaps other clubs around the country, as it could encourage players of other clubs to follow suit if necessary.
