Full Strength or Second String?

We Tottenham fans are only too aware that we need to kick on this season after the disappointing league finish of last year.

Fortunately, at the present time things are looking good. Ramos has made some top notch signings, Darren Bent is on fire and our long term absentees:- Bale, Ekotto and King are all back and playing.

However, it is unlikely we will be able to make serious inroads on all four fronts of the competitions we are involved in:- Coca Cola, UEFA, and FA cups and Premier League/ Champions League qualification.

We are going to be forced to prioritise where and when we use our best eleven. This would be essential so that we do not overstretch the players causing exhaustion and avoidable injuries.

With a little planning this could be, and hopefully will be, a landmark season for us. We, however, desperately need to avoid falling between all four stools thus making all our efforts pointless.

It is without question that the Premier League, and with it Champions League qualification, should be our No 1 aim. This should be followed closely by a serious UEFA cup challenge to make other clubs in Europe sit up and take notice of our intent.

For those, we have to play our best available first eleven. While with the other two, dare I say, we should take a leaf out of Mr Wenger’s book and use some of our more promising fringe players to give them true competitive first hand experience to add to their CV’s.

I would do as he would and give them free rein in the Coca Cola, but also field them in the early rounds of the FA cup unless we are drawn against decent opposition.

Players like Gunter, Rose, Pekhart and Taarabt with one of our back up goalkeepers and our other squad players should be able to put on a respectable show and in the process fast track their progression towards the first team.

Following this procedure would, in my view, undoubtedly prove of long term benefit to the club and especially those individuals that prove their worth.
