Former Player Tips 23 y/o Spurs Star To Be “Up For The Fight” In 2019/20

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent has said that he believes midfielder Harry Winks has got a point to prove this year following the signing of his new long term deal at White Hart Lane.

Some Spurs Speculation Can Be Put To Bed As Duo Sign New Lengthy Contracts

Earlier in the week, the club announced five year deals for both Winks and Ben Davies and most fans were rightly delighted with that given the promise our former Academy graduate has shown, but he did only start 17 Premier League games last season as injuries interrupted his year again.

For Bent, speaking to Football Insider, he felt that particularly on an England front now, he had to step up further to really build on his promise and nail his spot down in manager Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI to increase his international ambitions and build on his three caps so far.

“Harry Winks is an exciting young player. He was one of them that people were talking about starting for England so he’s obviously got that to prove as well. With Harry Winks, he’s in the position now where he’s up against some good, young, English players. Last season he had to contend with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Dele Alli, Jordan Henderson, Eric Dier. Now you throw into the mix Jack Grealish, he’s now in the right division so he’s probably going to get a call-up. Mason Mount got a call-up playing in the Championship for Derby. In that position there’s going to be some real key battles that whoever can lock down a position and play well for their club is going to get that England call. I’m sure Harry Winks is going to be up for the fight.”

Some will naturally question Bent’s decision to list Henderson and Dier as potential rivals for Winks spot given his attributes and style of play, but he’s certainly correct to mention that our 23-year-old will be up for the ‘fight’ as he’s already proven that.

A bit more luck with injuries wouldn’t go amiss either so he could really get that confidence up, but clearly Spurs and Pochettino are confident he’ll do just that.
