Explained: Why Tottenham won’t pay £34m to sign £40k-per-week forward

|

According to ESPN, Malcom wants to leave Barcelona after struggling for form and playing time at the Camp Nou. The 22-year-old has made only three Liga starts for Barca this season and is expected to be moved on this summer as a result – on loan or permanently.

Tottenham have been linked with the forward for some time, but it’s unlikely they will procure his signature unless an existing player leaves. Malcom’s poor form and lack of games will put them off, and the uncapped Brazilian wouldn’t improve Spurs’ squad as things stand.

He isn’t better than Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela or Christian Eriksen, so it makes little sense for Tottenham to spend £34m to sign the £40k-per-week man. Mauricio Pochettino is expected to shop in the transfer market this summer but bringing in a wide forward is not the priority.

Eriksen is being linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Malcom would not be a like-for-like replacement. Spurs did see very keen on his signature before Barcelona signed him, but they may turn their attentions elsewhere until he finds his form.

Signing a central defender is the priority this summer.
