Explained: Why Tottenham failed to sign Max Aarons

|

For more than six months, Tottenham were tipped to sign Max Aarons amid uncertainty over Kieran Trippier’s future, but nothing has come of the rumours. Spurs were linked with the Norwich City defender all the way back in December 2018, but it now appears they’ve given up trying.

According to Dan Kilpatrick of the Evening Standard, Tottenham were unwilling to match Aarons’ asking price of £20m. The Lilywhites were admirers of the 19-year-old but didn’t think he was worth the money. But with Trippier nearing a £25m move to Atletico Madrid, couldn’t that money have gone towards signing Aarons?

He would have been a fantastic addition to the squad. Aarons made 41 Championship appearances last season, scoring and creating eight goals. He created 31 chances, made 56 successful dribbles, won 25 aerial duels (37%), averaged 44 passes-per-game with 81% accuracy, blocked 54 crosses/shots/passes, made 65 clearances and whipped in 78 crosses with 13% accuracy.

Aarons also averaged a tackle (64) or interception (46) every 31 minutes. Spurs wouldn’t meet his asking price, however, and latest reports now suggest Tottenham will avoid bringing in a new right-back altogether. It appears Mauricio Pochettino will stick with Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters for next season.
