Explained: What’s the latest on Toby Alderweireld?

|

Toby Alderweireld looks unlikely to leave Tottenham after his minimum fee release clause expired without a club matching the £25m asking price. Far from being disappointed, the 30-year-old admitted he’s happy to stay for another year and is solely focused on doing well for Spurs.

AS Roma aren’t giving up on signing Alderweireld, however. Despite having a previous bid rejected by Tottenham, Il Messagero (h/t Sport Witness) say the Serie A giants have made another offer for the Belgian international that the Lilywhites are ‘evaluating’.

It’s hard to see Spurs entertaining any bid, however, as Alderweireld is a vital part of the defence. The 30-year-old has featured heavily in pre-season, racking up 45 minutes against Juventus (July 21), 45 minutes against Manchester United (July 25) and another 45 minutes against Real Madrid (July 30), and is one of the first names on the teamsheet under Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham would rather retain his services for 12 months and lose him for free in 2020 than cash in early, such is the difficulty in replacing him. Signing a new centre-back appeared to be on the agenda this summer, but Yerry Mina, Juan Foyth and Eric Dier may be deemed as enough cover now Alderweireld is staying.
