Explained: What’s the latest on Giovani Lo Celso?

|

Tottenham have agreed a four-year deal worth £70k-per-week for Giovani Lo Celso, but the Londoners are yet to agree a fee with Real Betis. Unsurprisingly, Daniel Levy is trying to negotiate a lower price for the 23-year-old but Betis aren’t budging on their valuation.

ABC Sevilla (h/t Sport Witness) say Betis are holding out for £68m while Diario de Sevilla report that the highest bid Spurs have made is £45.6m. The two sides are some distance away from agreeing a fee and there’s little over a week remaining of the summer transfer window.

Lo Celso’s arrival may no longer require Christian Eriksen’s sale either. The 27-year-old has been linked with a move away from Tottenham all summer after admitting his desire for a new challenge, but no club have made a serious approach. Real Madrid were named as suitors, but they appear more keen on Paul Pogba.

Levy may not have had a problem signing Lo Celso for more money if Eriksen’s sale covered the price, but now the Tottenham owner is obliged to get the best possible deal. It’s not unlike Levy to wait until the final stages of a transfer window, but supporters won’t be happy if Spurs can’t get Lo Celso over the line after so much anticipation and build up.
