Explained: What’s the latest on Dani Ceballos?

|

It’s bad news for Tottenham, as Dani Ceballos looks destined to join Arsenal. The 22-year-old has been on Spurs’ radar all summer and appeared to be close to agreeing a season-long loan deal with the Lilywhites, but AS say Arsenal have hijacked the move and could confirm his arrival by the weekend.

Arsenal beating Tottenham to the midfielder’s signature may have been down to Unai Emery. AS add that the Gunners manager was ‘key to convincing Ceballos’ to move to the Emirates after struggling for playing time at Real Madrid. He likely stood more chance of being a regular at Arsenal than Tottenham.

The Spanish international started only 13 Liga games last season and was substituted on or substituted off in 78% of his 23 top-flight outings. It’s easy to see why Ceballos was open to a temporary switch away from the Santiago Bernabeu, but the news of his impending Arsenal move will be a blow to Spurs.

The Lilywhites need creativity in midfield with Christian Eriksen’s future being uncertain and it previously appeared that they had this deal sewn up. Losing out on a player to a fierce rival not in the Champions League next season will hurt, but Mauricio Pochettino will now have to turn his attention back to Giovani Lo Celso.
