Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £30m and £1m salary to sign winger

|

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham are one of many clubs interested in Said Benrahma. The 23-year-old has lit up the Championship in his debut season and is expected to be inundated with offers over the summer. Arsenal, West Ham United, Crystal Palace, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan have also been credited with an interest.

Brentford reportedly paid just £1.5m to sign Benrahma from OGC Nice last summer and his value has skyrocketed ever since. The Algerian international has scored and created 20 goals in 33 Championship games for the Bees, creating 74 chances and making 82 successful dribbles (51%) so it’s not hard to see why clubs are so keen on his signature.

If Mauricio Pochettino wants to bring him to Tottenham, Benrahma will set them back around £30m. His wages are unknown, but the average salary for a reserve team player at Nice is £0.23m-a-year/£4.5k-per-week. Brentford have a low wage budget in the Championship so the Algerian winger won’t have landed himself much of a payrise after joining the club.

If Tottenham meet Brentford’s asking price for Benrahma, they may have to treble the 23-year-old’s wages to close to £1m-a-year to fight off competition. One caveat is that Pochettino has Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura, Heung-min Son and Christian Eriksen at his disposal, so the £30m might be better spent elsewhere.
