Explained: Tottenham may have to pay £17.3m and £0.6m wages to sign centre-back

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Tottenham are interested in Luiz Felipe, turning their attentions away from Joachim Andersen of Sampdoria. The Lazio centre-back has been scouted by the Lilywhites this season and is believed to be on Spurs’ radar as a potential replacement for Toby Alderweireld.

Mauricio Pochettino is looking to bolster his backline this summer as Alderweireld could be on his way out. The Belgian international is out of contract in 2020, has a £26m release clause until the final two weeks of the upcoming transfer window and is reportedly wanted by numerous clubs.

If he leaves, the Londoners could be short at the back with Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth as their only options. That’s led Tottenham to scour the market for a replacement, but Felipe would be an interesting signing.

The Serie A man hasn’t been a regular at the Stadio Olimpico, making only 13 appearances this season – three of which have come in 2019. He’s played in 50 games in all competitions since joining Lazio from Ituano in 2016 but has clearly made enough of an impression to get Spurs’ interest.

TMW say he’s worth £17m. Gazette Dello Sport (h/t The Laziali) revealed the 22-year-old earns £1.16m-a-year/£22k-per-week (gross) – £605k-a-year/£11.6k-per-week (net). He wouldn’t break the bank, but is he good enough?
