Explained: Tottenham have to pay £26m and a £1.3m salary to sign attacking-midfielder

|

According to the Express, Tottenham are battling Arsenal for the signature of Pablo Fornals. The 23-year-old is an attacking-midfielder who plays for Villarreal and would provide more creativity to the side. The report believes Mauricio Pochettino is keen to bring Fornals to North London, but how much will it cost Tottenham?

The Spanish international has a release clause of £26m and earns around £1.3m-a-year in salary. He’d be a very affordable player if Spurs are desperate to sign him this summer, but he may not be worth the trouble. Fornals’ output in the final third has left a lot to be desired this season. He’s scored just one Liga goal and made two assists.

With Spurs having Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli at their disposal, they wouldn’t need the Spaniard. That could leave Arsenal unopposed to sign him. Finances will be tight this summer after the stadium build, so Daniel Levy is unlikely to take any risks with his money. He’ll only sanction a move for players who would improve the first-team squad and that may not apply to Fornals.

That’s not to say he isn’t talented. Fornals has created 39 chances and made 33 successful dribbles, but he isn’t better than Eriksen or Alli so Tottenham won’t sign him unless an existing player is offloaded.
