Explained: The gamble Mauricio Pochettino made that is costing Tottenham results

|

Tottenham are struggling of late. The Lilywhites have dropped outside of the Premier League’s top-six and find themselves already 10 points adrift of leaders Liverpool after six games.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were recently eliminated from the EFL Cup at the hands of League Two side Colchester United, so who is to blame for their current demise?

The Tottenham manager told Sky Sports in August that his squad were lacking harmony & unity and recently reiterated to BBC Sport that Spurs still have an unsettled group one month later.

Over the summer, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose, Serge Aurier, Victor Wanyama and Christian Eriksen were linked with moves away from Tottenham but have continued to get playing time under Pochettino.

The Spurs boss has a squad of players who sought an exit from the club, so it’s hardly a surprise that results are being affected. Pochettino has an entire back-four who could have been on their way out this summer, so is it any wonder the Lilywhites have shipped two or more goals in three of their last five games?

Tottenham’s squad is made up of unhappy players with uncertain futures, so why does Pochettino continue to give them so many minutes? The Lilywhites have picked up just one win in their last seven games and could be in for a long season if the players remain divided and disillusioned.
